  1. I am fortunate enough to have such a huge amount of Middle Devonian Givetian material that I thought it best to put the older Middle Devonian stage, the Eifelian, in its own thread. There are some spectacular fossils here as well though! I thought a good place to start would be in the Formosa Reef, which I believe is quite early Eifelian. This tabulate coral and stromatoporoid reef continues similar complexes found from the Middle Silurian, see my: https://www.thefossilforum.com/topic/84678-adams-silurian/page/3/ thread from page three onwards for details. All these Formosa Reef specimens come from a delightful gift from my good friend @Monica who is a tad busy with life at the moment but is fine and still thinking of the forum. This outcrop can be found on Route 12 near Formosa/Amherstburg, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. This beautiful-looking specimen came to me with only a third of it revealed but I managed to get it this far after nine days of painful pin prepping. Monica found another one and posted it for ID here: https://www.thefossilforum.com/topic/105528-weird-circular-imprints-formosa-reef-lower-devonian/#comment-1172285 The specimen was identified by another Canny Canadian @Kane to be the little stromatoporoid sponge Syringostroma cylindricum. Hardly a reef-builder, but gorgeous nonetheless. It does have a little thickness to it, but not much. Beautiful! Pretty thin, actually. I love this Monica, thank you!

    Trilobite ID

    Hello, all. I obtained this gorgeous little trilobite in one of my best-ever haggling deals in Agadir a few years back. The names keep changing, so first of all, am I right in thinking this is now the genus Belenopyge? Or is it Acanthopyge (Belenopyge)? And is the species bassei or estevei? Hypostome?     Adventures in the Needmore Shale

    Hello everyone, A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to visit a more distant fossil locality - an opportunity that I took to collect some Paleozoic fossils among the scenic Appalachians of eastern West Virginia. Heading out west, I planned to visit a new exposure of the Needmore Shale that I suspected had the potential to produce some nice trilobite specimens. Unfortunately, upon arriving at the locality rain was coming down in droves, effectively ending any chance of prospecting the locality. Hoping to escape the rain, I made my way farther south toward the well known Lost River road cut in the vicinity of Wardensville, West Virginia. As I had hoped I did manage to escape the rain, and I was left with a few hours to search for some Devonian fossils among the fissile green shale. I had only been to the Lost River locality once before late last year, and I had managed to secure the trilobites which had proven rather elusive in the more fossiliferous rocks of the Mahantango. The rain, which did seem to have swept through the area shortly before I arrived, had turned the fine rock dust that coated the talus piles into slippery mud. Above the treacherous talus piles, a large vertical exposure of the Needmore Shale held trilobites and a variety of other shallow marine fauna that had once inhabited a Devonian reef. Here are the finds from both trips I have taken to the Lost River locality: A few small brachiopods from the locality. Unlike other Paleozoic localities I have had the opportunity to visit, brachiopods do not seem to be extremely common at the road cut. I only came across them occasionally, with most being so small they were hard to identify without the aid of a magnifiying glass. A spiral gastropod preserved in iron oxide that contrasts quite nicely with the dark green matrix. On the most recent trip I found the two above specimens exposed on the surface of the shale. They seem like they could be the central lobe of trilobite pygidiums with the other two sections having weathered away. Any insight into what these might be would be greatly appreciated . Rugose coral The specimen above is intriguing. The roundish shape seems to suggest a fossil, though it could very well have a geological origin. I apologize for the poor photographs of the above specimen, but it was incredibly difficult to get the camera to focus on it properly. When I came across this fossil whilst splitting shale, I was quite confident that I had come across a trilobite due to the black calcitic appearance and the 'ribbing' that seemed to define the fossil. Yet after extracting and cleaning the fossil, it does not resemble a trilobite and is very faint even after the shale dust was removed. Any suggestions as to what it might be would be very welcome . Some assorted Dipleura ribs. Some trilobite ribs, likely either belonging to Dipleura or Eldredgeops rana. Eldredgeops rana pygidium preserved in a light yellow color. Enrolled Eldredgeops rana consisting of the body with a partial cephalon (first two images) and the pygidium on the reverse side (last image). The trilobite is flattened, which may be a result of the tectonic forces acting on the rock during the uplift of the Appalachian mountains. Another Eldredgeops rana specimen with considerable relief from the surrounding matrix. This specimen was found in association with a few others, though if it possessed a cephalon it was lost among the chips of shale. A prone Eldredgeops rana molt found on the first outing to the road cut. Positive and negative of an Eldredgeops rana molt. Thanks for taking a look!
  5. Hi everyone, I recently purchased a collection from a retired fossil collector. Including in this collection was a box with Brachiopods from the Eifel region. Unfortunately it is harder than expected to ID them all. So here is the first batch of photo's of Brachiopods which I all believe to be Spiriferid. 1) A couple of small Spiriferid brachiopiods which seem to be from the same species: After some google searching and comparisons my best bet is "Hysterolites hystericus" 2) A larger well preserved Spiriferid Looks like a Cyrtospirifer sp. to me 3) Another larger and well preserved Brachiopod: Pretty sure this is a "Spinocyrtia ostiolata" 4) A larger Brachiopod Another Cyrtospirifer? 5) A larger Brachiopod (same species as nr 4) Another Cyrtospirifer?
  6. Hi everyone! Yesterday I bought a collection of fossils from a retired fossil hunter, included in the lot was a box full of devonian Brachiopods from the Eifel region (mainly Gerolstein) in Germany. I find Brachiopods very interesting and I am getting better at ID'ing them, but there are quite a few species I've never really seen before and my usual ID website of Paleontica doesn't seem to have most in their database. So I was hoping if anyone here has some handy articles, papers or websites which might help with my quest on ID'ing these critters. PS. I was also planning on posting the ones I really can't figure out, but since I am leaving for Solnhofen tomorrow I wanted to get my hands on some good sources first. Thank you in advance!
  7. Hello everyone, I recently received a lot of 3 brachiopods from Spain. Here they are with their original labels that they were listed with and that I received them with: The issue is that when I began to do a bit more research on these species, specifically Hexarhytis the paper that comes up shows and describes a completely different brachiopod. Looking up the other Athyrid the results I got were much closer but still not exactly like the brachiopod I have, but since I got more results for this search I could now do a bit of looking into the closely related taxa which I was sure would help me find a match. Currently, after that bit of reading I think that the larger brachiopod may be Plicathyris collensis while the smaller one looks more like Anathryis ferronensis to me. Does anyone know if these IDs would be accurate? Are there any papers I could read to better familiarize myself with these species? I wasn't able to find much online but this is the best I could come up with so far. Additionally, does anyone know how I could identify the species of orthid that is on the left? Researching the other two made me suspicious about the ID for this brachiopod too, it seems that the formation is accurate for this species but there are other orthids present there and I am not sure how to distinguish between them. I will attach more pictures of all of them below. The one I believe is actually Plicarthys: What I believe is Anathyris: Orthid labelled as Rhipidomella cervantesi: Thank you!

    Middle Devonian cephalopod prep.

    Last weekend we made a fieldtrip with the “CGH” ( Cercle geologique du Hainaut ) to the quarry “La Couvinoise” , the quarry happens to be in Couvin :p Here the deposits are middle Devonian: Eifelian and Givetian, so a bit older than the locations we usually prospect. The best part for the fossils are the Eifelian deposits, but sadly those layers are no longer in exploitation. However, due to the drought and the low water level we had access to a small but promising scree pile. Here we found a fragmented nautiloid, but the centre of the specimen seemed to be still in the matrix. The prep at home went relatively smooth, the fossil was cracked inside so I had to glue some parts back together, but the separation from the matrix was really smoot. This resulted in my best nautiloid fossil from that time period. As far as the determination goes, comparing it with a few old publications and specimens in the museum in Brussels we probably got a Pleuroncoceras nodosum or a close relative.

  11. Hello everyone, I recently received two pieces of brachiopod fossils from Poland, both come from the Eifelian in Grzegorzowice. The first piece contains a number of small productids, I am not sure about the IDs but they do look quite similar to Poloniproductus varians that I have seen come from that area so I am wondering if that is what they are. And the next brachiopod is some kind of Athyrid? I wasn't able to find any similar species from this location. I would appreciate any help with identifying these, Thank you for looking!

    Millerosteus minor Miller, 1858 Middle Devonian Eifelian Caithness Scotland Millerosteus minor (named after Hugh Miller, a Scottish geologist and paleontologist 1802-1856) was a small arthrodire placoderm, rarely exceeding 15cm. The extinct armored fishes known as placoderms make up what is considered to be the earliest branch of the gnathostome family tree -- the earliest branch of the jawed fishes. Arthrodires possessed jaws but no teeth. Razor-sharp bony dental plates formed sort of a beak and allowed to gnaw on prey. Arthrodires (“jointed neck”) are characterized by an unusual joint in the dorsal armor between the head and neck regions; this joint apparently allowed the head to move upwards as the jaw dropped downwards, creating a larger gape. In addition, it also had an internal joint between its neck vertebrae and the back of the skull, allowing for the mouth to be opened even wider and being able to feed on rather large prey. Millerosteus probably fed on invertebrates such as crustaceans and mollusks or even was a mud-grubber that ingested organic-rich mud for its food. Arthrodires possessed a heavily armored head- and neck-region. The slender fish-like body and the heterocercal tail that extends behind the heavily armored portion is, because it is almost naked or only covered with small scales, rarely preserved. Millerosteus is a rather common fish in the Middle Devonian flagstones around Caithness.
  14. Hi everyone! Yesterday my girlfriend & I went on a fossil hunting trip to an abandoned quarry in Resteigne in Belgium. https://www.paleontica.org/sites/fossil_site.php?plaats=10&language=en I am currently at home for some time due to mental health issues. I am currently dealing with despression and severe anxiety attacks all related to COVID-19, I am in a risk group and work in an essential store and the stress and way that people threat you finally became too much and I simply snapped. I finally decided to go see a doctor and a psychologist to help out of it all. Since besides going to work I hadn't left the house for the past 6 months and I really needed to get out to help me get rid of the stress and fear, so both the psychologist and doctor encouraged my to go on some fossilhunts as I needed to come out of the house and do some outdoor activities to help with my healing process. So yesterday I went on my first hunt to help me recover! The quarry we visited was an abandoned quarry in Resteigne and the rocks found there are Devonian in age. Most of the fossils found here are from the Eifelian (393.3 - 387.7 mya) and are part of the Jemelle formation. We arrived quite early at the quarry and spent almost 5 and a half hours searching for fossils here. Since we went on a normal week day, we were lucky enough the have the quarry all to our self! Since it was our first time in the quarry we didn't really find anything too spectacular, but I am very happy with the things we found and most important of all, we had a great and fun day! The surrounding environment was stunning and the weather was prefect, sunny but not too hot and not too cold! Ruguse coral in the rocks Only 15 minutes after we arrived we already found our first trilobite! Unfortunatly it was enbedded in a big boulder of very though rock at an impossible angle to remove. We did try to remove it, but when we noticed it would be near impossible and removing it would probably destroy the trilo we eventually decided to leave it. There where multiple other fossils in the same boulder, among them these nice Brachiopods

    Not a Clue.

    This specimen came to me via Sophie @fifbrindacier, @Coco and Santa. It is from the Eifelian, Middle Devonian of Col d'Aubisque, France and was labelled Calceola sandalina, which it clearly isn't, but may be a coral. Any ideas, anyone? It is sort of rectangular, widening upwards, but concave on each of the four sides. No signs of horizontal growth lines. Thank you, Adam. Reverse.     400 Million years in 4 hours

    400 Million years in 4 hours The small-scale geology of Austria makes it possible to observe and collect invertebrate marine fossils from a time span of nearly 400 Million years (Ma) within a few hours and at a distance of only about 10 km: - 395 Ma old Devonian (Eifelian) corals - Ölberg - 80 Ma old Cretaceous (Campanian) rudists – St. Bartholomä - 12 Ma old Miocene (Serravallian/Sarmatian) gastropods - Waldhof I did this special hunting trip west of Graz at October 22, 2019 as a "feasibility study". The youngest and oldest fossils can simply be picked from the ground (or photographed); the “middle-agers” require some searching; I succeeded to find a few good specimens within one hour. Weather was perfect with nearly 25°C (!). Simplified geological map of Styria with the visited area west of Graz (red rectangle). Just to show off some landscape: View from point “A” in Steinberg towards west. K = Kreuzegg mountain (570 m, Campanian St. Bartholomä-formation) at a distance of ca. 5 km. A = Plateau-like Amering mountain (2187 m, high-grade metamorphic rocks) at a distance of ca. 40 km. View from point “B” at Kreuzegg mountain towards north to southeast. Ölberg and Waldhof sites are between P and B, but not visible. Note the about 1000 m high, largely deforested mountains at the left side of the pano (Mühlberg, Pleschkogel etc., lower Devonian, dolomitic Flösserkogel-formation). More specimens will follow from time to time (hopefully). The first two specimens contain abundant branches of the tabulate coral Striatopora? suessi. Field pics of these specimens are already posted in the hunting trip, but here you can see also their side views, showing the alingment of the individual coral branches. (I don´t know why pics don´t look good here, but if you are zooming in, they are ok).

As there are some polished fossil-rock specimens from this formation in the Christmas auction, I would like to present some background info with (mostly) some field photographs, so I have put this in “Fossil Hunting Trips”. The Palaeozoic of Graz is a thrust sheet within the Eastern Alps, composed of Silurian to Pennsylvanian sediments. It consists of three separate nappes, the most fossiliferous formation is the Plabutsch-formation within the Rannach nappe. This Devonian formation is of Eifelian age (ca. 395 Ma), about 100 m thick and mostly made up of a very dark, gray-blueish to black, fine-grained, thickly bedded limestone. Superficially, it weathers to a medium to light grey color. Geological map of Styria with the Palaeozoic of Graz situated north of Graz. Stratigraphic column of the Rannach nappe of the Palaeozoic of Graz, Plabutsch-formation is Nr. 4. From Hubmann & Gross, 2015. Thicknesses of formations are not to scale! The Plabutsch-formation crops out at various places to the west and north of Graz and more than 100 fossil sites are known within this formation. The most abundant fossils are corals, brachiopods, stromatoporids and crinoid fragments. Other fossils like gastropods, bivalves or trilo-bits are very rare. In a paper from 1975, about 50 coral species are listed, but less than 10 are abundant: Tabulata: Favosites styriacus Penecke, 1894 Pachycanalicula barrandei (Penecke, 1887) Thamnopora boloniensis (Gosselet, 1877) Thamnopora reticulata (Blainville, 1830) Striatiopora? suessi Penecke, 1894 Rugosa: Thamnophyllum stachei Penecke, 1894 Zelophyllia cornuvaccinum (Penecke, 1894) Do you feel that there is something strange with this list? Yes, it is! Most species have their type locality within this formation and were first described by Penecke, except T. boloniensis (T. reticulata was also erected by Penecke as Pachypora orthostachys and later synonymized with an earlier described species). In my opinion, this does not reflect a high degree of endemism, but an urgent need for revision… The most abundant fossil is Favosites styriacus, which can form massive colonies up to 0.5 m in size. Here is an example from Hohe Rannach Mt. (1018 m) north of Graz, photo 05/26/2018, Col-Nr. 4093, length of pocket knife is 9 cm: As most fossils in this formation, it was found in scree and float in a wooded area. Nr. 4093 is waiting near the pocket knife toward the lower right corner… Another Favosites styriacus, north of Fürstenstand Mt. (754 m), northwest of Graz, photo 10/30/2015, not in collection. Tabulae are very well visible, weathering is usually your friend there!
