    Lost River Easter egg hunt

Went on a little "Easter Egg Hunt" with my folks, found some excellent fossils. day was hot but I enjoyed it. I have provided my best ID, but please feel free to correct if you can identify it further! it helps with my labeling system for sure. this lizard was good luck right next to where my mom was standing i noticed this beauty sticking out of the rock further excavation revealed this possible horn coral? eldredgeops rana heads trilobite glabellar fold ( possibly Odontocephalus?) Prep Practice

From the album: Fossildude's Middle Devonian Hamilton Group Fossils

Eldredgeops rana - Middle Devonian, Hamilton Group, Windom Shale. Buffalo, NY. Trying out the new air scribe and air eraser.Seems to be working fairly well. Note the black dots along the edges of the axial lobe. It is believed that these are preserved chromatophores, that allowed the trilobites to "change color" for camouflage purposes. NOTE: Specimen was moistened to show color differentiation better. Link to discussion about this fossil: > CLICK ME! <

  7. Hey all, Decided to hit the Mahantango today. This spot has historically produced a complete trilobite during my hunting. While my collecting has become more selective as I have to try to keep storage in mind, I did pick up a few examples that I wanted to share. This I believe is a Platyceras? While I am getting more selective on keeping heads, I particularly liked this association of a head and pygidium. I do not believe these are the same specimen as the size and angles would be off but it did make me think of the rough sediments and po

  9. Here is a E. rana fossil I found at Penn Dixie the year after I started collected fossils in 2015. It shows clear evidence of having been partly crushed by a horn coral on pleurites 5 through 10 only on the right side. The curvature of the thorax elements support this interpretation as well as demonstrate remarkable flexibility. This is a specific event that must have taken place shortly before, during or after the demise of the trilobite, while it was still malleable to be so contorted. Pardon the poor prep, I used a sewing pin in a pin-vise to clear away matrix. All images are the same speci
  10. Penn Dixie Fossil Park in Hamburg, NY is known for small but plentiful Eldredgeops rana and aside from a rare mortality plate, finding a complete 2 inch specimen is a big deal! So imagine my excitement when I uncovered this. OK, not entirely complete because I messed up the extraction a bit. But this unfortunate character managed to lie down on one pleural lobe, and get squished literally laterally. All three pics are the same trilobite, with the third picture being the classic dorsal view. Hath this nonconforming fellow no sense of the future? How common is this in your experiences?
  11. Hey everyone! Happy to finally be making another entry. Over the last couple of weeks I've been reading Richard Fortey's "Trilobite" and thus itching to get back into the field and see some for myself. Driving from New York to Chicago I decided to make a pit stop at Ohio's Paulding Community Fossil Garden and try my luck at finding some eldredgeops fossils. Here's what the garden looks like when you arrive: You're basically wading through fossils step after step. Here's the best of what I found, excluding some nice surface-collected brachiopods I've b

    Penn Dixie Round 1

This year I pulled the trigger on heading to Penn Dixie for the Dig With the Experts weekend! Definitely would highly recommend . I drove up from Boston to the Buffalo area on Thursday and spent the day Friday digging with @Malcolmt and @JamesAndTheFossilPeach. It was a blast! Thanks again guys for giving me a lay of the land. Credit to @JamesAndTheFossilPeach for the find of the day with a giant Eldredgeops (pic below). Saturday and Sunday were spent looking for trilobites in the roped off Dig With the Experts section of excavated shale with some success. Monday I drove back to Boston, and s

    It this Trilobite Eldredgeops Rana?

I got this from the same estate I got everything else. This came to me with no information. From the little I've learned this is a Trilobite Eldredgeops Rana? Am I right? If not, what is it? It is 3 mm long. Thank you, everyone and Merry Christmas!
