  3. Taxonomy from Mindat.org. Description for the genus from Südkamp 2017, p. 106" The uniseral arms branch at least once above the second brachial. Proximally they bear pinnules on every second brachial. Beyond the seventh of these, a pinnule is attached to every brachial. Hapalocrinus has quadrangular or rectangular brachials. The anal tube is absent or incipient. The stem is slender. Some elements of the upper stem bear straight spines." Hapalocrinus elegans has only ten slender free arms and no spines.   5. Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 118: " The cup is small and the crown elongate ovoid,. The uniserial robust arms divide after the third primibrach isotomously. In total, there are at least three bifurcations. The amount of brachials between the higher divisions increases. The round arms rejuvenate especially after the third division and form long, thin whip-like terminations. As in Codiacrinus these terminations are often enrolled. The upper round stem is wide and consists of low elements. The distal stem consists of alternate high elements.     Lingulid ?

    Found in an Emsian marine formation in northwestern Maine. This nodule, or concretion, is considerably darker than most found nearby. It was also in a layer with an accumulation of shells, where as many of the fossils are horn corals dispersed more randomly in what I think is muddy sandstone. Would this be a phosphate nodule that preserved a Lingulid ?

Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 147:" The small holothurian has a cylindrical form consisting of a distinct oral region with surrounding tentacles, and at the other end an elongate body that is rounded distally. The lobate arrangement of the 25 plated tentacles, the large ovate madreporite plate (perforated plate for entering of water), and the weakly developed calcareous ring are primitive features among the holothurians. The ossicles of the body wall are numerous small granules underlain by small plate-like elements. In the basal part thorn-like elements are more abundant." Identified by oilshale using Südkamp 2017.     Taxonomy from Fossilworks.com Brauckmann et al. 2002, p. 215 claim that "Nahecaris is a subjective junior synonym of Dilophaspis as already suggested by HAHN (1990)." Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 83: "Nahecaris is the most common non-trilobite arthropod. The large bivalved shield (carapace) covers the head, thorax, and anterior segments of the abdomen. Dorsally, a short anterior rostral plate and a longer posterior median plate separate the valves. The carapace shape (deep and rounded or long and narrow) and the ornamentation (generally fine ridges parallel to the oral border) varies. A strengthened rim along the margin forms a doublure. The head bears a pair of large, club-shaped, stalked eyes, and two pairs of biramous antennae, the second much larger than the first. The thoracic segments each bear a pair of biramous slender limbs (thoracopods) that decrease in size posteriorly. Mostly, the endopods are curved downwards so that they form a cone-shaped feeding basket. The abdomen consists of seven cylindrical segments, of which only up to four are visible. The first five bear biramous limbs (pleopods) made up of flap-like branches. The seventh abdominal segment is twice to three times longer than the others. The abdomen terminates with a median telson spine, flanked by two much longer, and coarser, lateral furcal branches. The ornament of abdomen and telson is similar to that of the carapace." The margin of the disc consists of 15 rod-like plates, of which every three of them are lying interradially. The marginals are connected to the second arm segment (personal information F. Hotchkiss, 2016). the vertebral halves are arranged in opposing pairs. The largest elements of the arm skeleton are the curved laterals, which bear a row of small spines of unequal length. They are orally touching across the midline of the arms.   13. Old name: Protospongia rhenana Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 25:"The large sponge has the outline of a vase, flask or bowl. It has mainly bundled diactines of the first order, which are woven into a rectangular mesh, but in contrary to Retifungus are not coiled (fibre optics network). In addition, the sponge has a lot of small triaxones of the second order lying in one plane, which radiate hexagonal (so called hexatines) or possibly also tetra radial (stauracts), because of the reduction of one of the axes of a triaxon."     Confusing shell mold

    I think this is basically a Mucrospirifer mold but what else is there ? Primarily the rugose feature. Pedicle attachment ?
  17. Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 111: " Cup small, low and cone-shaped. The long and slender, non-pinnulated arms divide three to four times isotomously above the sixth to ninth primibrach in variable positions. The anal sack is slender and elongate and composed of several vertical rows of plicate plates. The stem is round with pentangular proximal elements." Of the 5 species described, P. zeaeformis has a relatively truncated cup. The anal sack has the appearance of a cob of maize (long and mostly curved). Identified by oilshale. References: W.   19. Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Description (Südkamp 2017, p. 100): "The flattened theca is angular and trapezoidal in outline. The large angular anal field is positioned in the centre of one side of the theca (the anal), allowing it to be distinguished from the other (the abanal). The delicate plates are organized in large arcs across the abanal side. The peripheral rim is flat. The stem is very long. The body-oriented part consists of alternating simple and large collar ring-like elements. The more elongate distal elements are barrel-shaped. The long and slender uniserial brachiales are in the exothecal projections for food-gathering. Name meaning: Regula = Leiste, pleuro = to the side, lateral. Identified by oilshale.   20. Loriolaster was a slow-moving low-level epifaunal detritivore-suspension feeder. Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 132: " Loriolaster is related to Cheiropteraster and differs by the following features. The smooth skin forms a wide U-shaped area between the arms. The mouth frame consists of the mouth angle plates together with only the enlarged second ambulacrals. Loriolaster has wide ambulacrals and spoon like laterals. Their margin bears three rather short spines as well as one larger spine." Loriolaster mirabilis is more common than the more slender Loriolaster gracilis. Identified by oilshale.   21. The old name for this very common Ophiuroid is Taeniaster beneckei. Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 135: "The mouth-angle plates are slender and abut to form a characteristic V-shape. The disc is constructed of oval-shaped scale-like plates held together by a reticulated pattern of granular skin. The interradial margin is concave or rounded and lacks marginal plates. The proximal ambulacral furrow is broad. The five arms taper evenly into long whip-like tips. A finely granular skin covers the dorsal surface of the arms. The ambulacrals are alternating, unfused and boot-shaped. The foot is only slightly longer than the top of the boot. The laterals are crescent shaped and ear-like. They bear up to five groove spines and five evenly tapering vertical spines, the oral-most one is the longest. The vertical spines decrease in length distally along the arms. Identified by oilshale.   22. Euzonosoma was a brittlestar genus that existed during the Devonian period. This E. tischbeinianum is from the Bundenbach slate of Germany. The slate was quarried for use in the roofing industry for many years and, at least in some parts of Germany, you can still see houses covered by Bundenbach slates. Unfortunately, roof-slate mining in Bundenbach came to an end in 1999. The fossil has been replaced by iron pyrite or ''fool's gold''. The brittlestar already started to become decomposed at the tip of the arms. Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Alternative combinations: Aspidosoma tischbeinianum, Encrinaster tischbeinianus. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 132: " The quite large disc is composed of large and irregularly polygonal plates. The disc has a concave margin and is bound by blocky rounded marginals. They have in the middle part their largest size. The mouth-angle plates are small and stumpy and have a broad proximalgroove. The five elongate arms are the broadest just outside of the disc edge, taper strongly and end whip-like. The ambulacrals alternate over the midline and are rectangular dorsally. They form transverse ridges that are groove-like and, especially within the disc, deeply sunken. Orally the ambulacrals are boot-shaped. Description from Südkamp 2017, p. 127: "Urasterella is the most common asteroid in the Hunsrück Slate. The small disc is composed of a hexagonal central plate surrounded by five hexagonal radial plates, and a further ring of small plates. The small mouth is built of only triangular flat plates. The dorsal surface of the round narrow arms is composed of at least three rows of plates (radials, adradials and inferomarginals; the last were pushed upwards). All plates of the dorsal side bear paxillae with spines. The plates of the oral surface are arranged in two double-sided rows (ambulacrals ans adambulacrals). Mostly, only the large disc-shaped adambulacrals can be recognized, as the opposing subrectangular ambulacrals can only be seen by the wide-opened arm furrow.
