I found this neat enchodus tail online for not much $. I'm fairly certain it's real, but I'm posting this in the Is It Real? Forum because I feel like this may be a composit. I drew a line where I think two pieces were composited to form a complete tail. Any ideas? The piece is 7 x 8 inches.

After coming back from college this Saturday I knew exactly what I had to do: hit the streams in NJ to find some fossils. I lived in Ohio for the majority of the year and did not have access to a car or fossils. I had to take advantage of the resources that I regained after coming back home. I have had a myriad of dreams about fossils from NJ and had to finally get in the brooks to live out those dreams. Frank seems to have taken advantage of the rain in the last month (he just posted another subject in Fossil Hunting Trips) - I missed this opportunity and begged my parents to go surface hunting for me to no avail. I went with my grandma on Tuesday 22 May, and again with my two friends on 23 May. I stayed in the streams for about two hours on Tuesday and found a partial mosasaur tooth. Then on Wednesday I found a worn mosasaur vert and some enchodus jaws. I hunted for 3.5 hours on Wednesday. I mostly sifted but also used a rake and a clear plastic bin to search for things in the water; this is how I found the majority of the enchodus material. Here are the finds. Hi guys! Saw this fossil online for a cheap price and I was wondering if it was real. I’m not very familiar with these Moroccan fossils but this piece looks ok to me, I just prefer to ask. The left fragment piece looks a bit weird. It is 30cm. Thanks for the help (this is the only picture I have,sorry...) kind regards

Today I came across a flat of Cretaceous Niobrara Formation / Smoky Hill Chalk- Kansas fish fossils, from a couple years ago. I was hoping that @Xiphactinus or other members might be able to help with and / or correct son ID's that I made on the following specimens. Any help would be appreciated. Xiphactinus audax Vert. Enchodus Tooth Saurodon leanus Jaw Sections Cimolichthys Jaw Sections Unknown Jaw Section Unknown Tail / Fin Pieces Unknown Fish Vert.

Enchodus or Plesiosaur? South Sulphur River Texas Cretaceous find. I think Enchodus but I'm not really sure how to tell the difference? It does seem a little different from my other dozen or so Enchodus.

Fun North Sulphur River Texas hunt. The big Tylosaur tooth and coprolite were my favorite finds of the day.

Hit Ramanessin Brook on Sunday (Late Cretaceous, marine, New Jersey) and saw a nice hunk of matrix with mollusk impressions sticking out of a gravel bar. Rinsing it revealed a gorgeous Enchodus palatine! I've never seen vertebrate remains in the NJ brooks in hard, fine matrix like this. And the chunk is riddled with gastropod and bivalve impressions and an impression of the worm tube Hamulus - my first. Score of the day!

A Trip to the North Carolina Eocene and Cretaceous

Took a trip last Friday to a quarry that has exposures of the Eocene Castle Hayne Formation and the Cretaceous PeeDee Formation. First let me say it was hot!!! Did I say it was hot? During the day many of us spent extra time in the cars/trucks with the a/c running and drinking extra fluids. The forecast temps were for the high 80's and low 90's, but down in the bowl of the quarry with no wind I believe it was in the high 90's low 100's. However the finds were very good. Almost everyone found at least one Hardouinia kellumi echinoid, several nice enchodus teeth were also found. I saw several crab carapaces along with abundant H. mortonis and Echinolampas appendiculatta echinoids. A massive C. auriculatus was found that in my opinion if the tip was there (feeding damage) would have been close to 4 3/8 inches. Lots of smaller Eocene teeth were found along with some Squalicorax. A multitude of brachiopods were found also, a few different species too. As far as myself I found plenty of brachiopods, Plictoria wilmingtonensis and 2 other species I am working on I.D.ing. Plenty of H. mortonis and E. appendiculatta. I also found one H. kellumi and a very uncommon high domed H. mortonis emmonsi echinoid. Also a beautiful, but small enchodus ferox tooth; a nice small Eocarpilius carolinensis crab carapace and a very nice Entemnotrochus nixus gastropod (slit shell). A few decent teeth and a smattering of other items. Long hike at NSR. I did manage to find my first turtle vert and Stratodus palatine bone. I love the colors on the little Mosasaur tail vert. It was a beautiful day and animals were on the move. More pics.

It was my first time hunting in awhile due to my crazy work schedule. Since we haven't had a good rain I figured it would be picked over. I found some really nice Mosasaur verts, coprolite and my best Clidastes jaw section yet with multiple replacement teeth showing. The fish vert is from one of the large Cretaceous fish probably Xiphactinus. The artifacts, Gastropods, Enchodus tooth, Mastodon tooth enamel and other Pleistocene tooth were a nice bonus. You can see little bones in all the coprolite. I will hit it again next week for sure.

Could someone assist in determining if these two items are an Enchodus or Xiphactinus? I found the larger one this past Saturday and the smaller one a few weeks ago, same general area at GreensMill Run in Greenville NC. Found these among whale bone, great white, tiger and crow shark teeth and a couple sharks of likely mastadon tooth - obviously a nice mix from a huge time span. I assumed enchodus until a friend mentioned the Xiphactinus, which I didn't even know was an option yet, so I would also appreciate detail on how I can discern between the two in the future - characteristics etc. 1. 2. and I also have several of these, ranging in size/condition some with enamel etc - this one as I'm taking photos I realized the tooth part of it might not actually be what I was thinking for this one, but the rest have the more rounded tooth, anyhow, are these jaw pieces with broken teeth like those above to be identified?

A muddy but fun NSR trip. I found a nice variety of fossils & artifacts. Some pretty good size baculites this time. @GeschWhat will probably appreciate the coprolite. It's full of bones under magnification.

North Sulphur River Texas was pretty picked over but I managed to find a nice variety. I found Mosasaur, Cretaceous Turtle, Ammonite, Enchodus / Shark Teeth, Ice Age Tooth, Rudists, Mastodon Tooth Enamel and one artifact in the creek. NSR needs a good rain.

I had a fun hunt today at NSR. I found a nice variety of fossils. My buddy made a friend with a small wild boar. We hiked 4 miles all together. Here's some pics of my finds. Mosasaur jaw section, Xiphactinus jaw section, Enchodus jaws and teeth, Shark teeth, Fish verts, Mosasaur tooth and verts, Tylosaur jaw fragment, Mystery bone and Old marble. The Mosasaur tooth was my first find of the day.

Palate bone of an Enchodus. The whole bone as well as the fang seem to be abraded. Maybe it's been partially digested?
