Hello, everybody! I have been sorting through my wenlock limestone material, Middle Silurian and have a couple of personal problematica. I am wondering if any of you brilliant folks could help me out. Here is an object which seems to be an epibiont on a Favosites coral. 5 mm long and about 1.5 mm diameter at the widest. Is it a cornulitid ? Or a single corallite of Aulopora? Something else, maybe? And another one? On a solitary rugose coral. 3 mm x 1 mm. And an example of Aulopora from Wiki to compare : And a cornulitid that looks a bit similar : I would be very grateful for any help. Then there is this. Is it the worm Keilorites? Length 1.9 cm, width 2.5 mm max.

Ampyx linleyensis Trilobite Stapley Volcanic Group, Knottmoor, Shropshire, England Ordovician Age (485.4 -443.8 million years ago ) Ampyx (meaning hairband) is a Ordovician-Silurian genus of Asaphid trilobites of the family Raphiophoridae. Species of Ampyx are characterized by three extended spines on the head-shield, one spine derived from each free cheek, and one spine emanating from the glabellum. Species include Ampyx linleyensis (Lanvirn-Caradoc series). Species of Ampyx grew to an average length of 1.5 inches (3.8 cm). A nice Dictyonema flabelliforme dendroid graptolite from Oslo Fields in Norway. It's Tremadoc, Lower Ordovician in age and is thus maybe around 480 mya. Another angle :

A rare genus from this bed, one previous record seen from Cumbria. It is common earlier in the Mississippian of the region. The voids are filled with transparent calcite. This genus has a lonsdaleoid outer dissepimentarium (looking like large bubbles). As is most commonly the case, it was largely removed prior to fossilisation, leaving a trace on one side (see photo 4). The contorted axial region is typical.

A small colony surrounded by Archaeocidaris debris. It shows the obverse side , i.e. the side with pores. It is preserved on the top face of a thin limestone lens that was overlain by shale. This is the most common fenestrate bryozoan in this area but the majority of specimens are found in shale and rarely split to show the obverse as it is the "stickier" side due to the pores.

An unusually complete specimen although crowns are well known from this location. It has a very short stem consisting of only six or seven columnals, all of which bear cirri. Once thought to be an early comatulid, it is now thought to belong to a separate lineage of nearly stemless pentacrinitids (Hess 2014). References: Simms, M.J. 1989. British Lower Jurassic Crinoids. A small block of bog wood from the fens. Not sure if this is fossil forum material, since it's only 4-6 thousand years old, but it is in the very earliest stages of fossilization. I would at least call it a subfossil. Bought online. -

This coprolite is from a marine creature that swam in the Jurassic seas that once covered this parts of England. The dark inclusions that can be seen on the surface are Onychites (cephalopod hooks). In April 2016, the University of Minnesota X-ray Computed Tomography Lab scanned the specimen using a X5000 high resolution microCT system with a twin head 225 kV x-ray source and a Dexela area detector (3073 x 3889 pixels). Many of the images shown here are of individual 3D elements/features within the coprolite that were separated/isolated using Blob3D. The taxonomic classification given is for the inclusions, not the coprolite. Aside from the hooks, it is hard to definitively identify the inclusions without damage to the coprolite. The following is a list of inclusions: 241 hooks of various sizes that are at least 75% intact. 200+ plate-like fragments of various sizes (likely similar to the surface nacre). 19 ellipsoidal structures, possibly forams or parasite eggs. 2 unidentified long, straight conical structures joined at wide end (A) 1 long rod-like structure with a bulbous end (B) 1 unidentified mass that looks like it was the attachment point for 5 rod-like structures (C) 1 1ong cylindrical (rod) structure that tapers in the center. The center density is much lower than the outer shell (D) 1 irregular structure that looks I originally thought might be an ink sack or buccal mass, but the size is wrong. Experta think it is more likely foraminifera (E) 1 irregular structure, possibly a statolith (F) Acknowledgements: Thank you to Neale Monks and Christian Klug for providing input.

Another ammonite species which gives its name both to the lithographical unit and the biostratigraphical zone. This zone is practically nonexistent in southern Germany, but interestingly enough, can be found both in Great Britain and France. For this reason I was pleased to recieve this specimen on a trade.
