  1. Hello everyone! I've once again made a return trip out to Holden Beach, which is my first trip of 2024. I briefly showed a few of my finds on my last report, but there were a lot of really interesting finds I've found that I'd like to show off. I didn't even realize I had some of these until I was sorting them earlier this week! It was a fairly nice weekend for early February, with it being rather warm during the day, but about the usual winter cold at night. The crowds were elevated similarly to they were in December due to the coverage the beach has been getting online, but otherwise weren't too bad. As usual, the best times to go were in the late evenings and early mornings, though I did try to do some midday hunting with a couple of friends this time as well, who stopped by for a little while. The beach was covered in Peedee Formation sediment chunks from some mid and late December storms, which made for some interesting finds. These are a couple of shots of my finds as I was cleaning them off. I picked up a fair bit of modern specimens as well this trip, which I'll show a little of at the end of this. The first of my main finds is this really neat paired Exogyra costata, which is the first one I've found! I'll have to see if I can work on getting the matrix off of this one, I'm looking into air abrasion to see if I can speed up my process, and maybe make it better as well. These are some Prehepatus harrisi crab chelae I found. This is the largest haul I've found since 2022, and the first I've found since February 2023! The left middle specimen and the one in the matrix have fairly decent fingers and dactyls, which are usually broken off beyond the end of the socket. My friend found a different segment of one leg, which isn't very common. This is a fish skull fragment and a fragmented mosasaur tooth. I didn't luck out with the mosasaur teeth this trip, though my friend found a nice one fairly quickly once she started looking. I did find a decent number of shark teeth this time, which was nice! I haven't been focusing down on these the last few trips, so next family trip we'll be having in the spring I might try to look a little harder for them. This is the first vertebra of this variety I've found since 2022, right after the beach work took place. My current thoughts are that it's from the primitive ray Brachyrhizodus wichitaensis, but there is some question if it came from an angel shark. An array of turtle scute fragments, some of the largest ones I've found there. I'm not sure if there is any specific identification for these, although I've been told that a lot of them are from softshelled turtles. Some I've found from previous trips look almost like box turtles or something similar. A horse tooth fragment. My friend came back again the next weekend and found a really nice intact one. Most of my finds are similar to this quality. These are some steinkerns I found. The first picture is a bivalve of some variety, and the second one is of some partial ammonites. This is a really interesting rock or phosphate nodule that has a shark tooth embedded into it! I've never seen a tooth in matrix quite like this from the area. It's far from perfect, but a really interesting piece regardless. On to some of the Hardouinia mortonis echinoids from this trip, this one was a particularly tall and narrow specimen, which is fairly interesting. There are some really interesting variations I've found over the last couple of years, but narrow ones or tall ones like this are probably the least common variations I've found, and the fact that it is both is really neat. This is a really interesting pathology I found, on the opposite side from my last one! This one unfortunately had some damage on the anterior end from the dredging pipe, and it started falling apart once I got it home and washed, so I had to stabilize the broken area with some strong adhesive. Here are some of my favorite echinoids from this trip. I didn't total up all the ones I ended up keeping, but my grand total of lower grade specimens I've collected to donate between this trip and my December one is 322. This last specimen is a broken one, but it is really neat in the fact that it shows the void of material present in most of these echinoids. This one obviously broke differently, but in a lot of specimens that are broken from the dredging process it tends to be in this area devoid of material. There are some small Scabrotrigonia bivalve molds on the aboral surface matrix. This is a large rib bone fragment of some variety. I've always understood them to be sirenian ribs, due to their dense and heavy nature. This is probably one of my best finds from the trip, a whole but small ammonite steinkern! I misidentified it as Sphenodiscus before, but after talking with some people I'm thinking it's a much rarer scaphitid ammonite, perhaps a Discoscaphites(?). It did break while in transport, but I was able to get it back together the best I could with the loss of material surrounding the break. This is a chunk of Peedee Formation sediment with a bunch of small gastropod steinkerns throughout, as well as two sizable Scabrotrigonia bivalve molds on one side. I saw a lot of these molds this trip, but these were some of the nicer ones. And speaking of trace fossils, this is another really good find from the trip! I picked up a lot of Exogyra costata oysters, but I didn't check them all very thoroughly while out on the beach, and didn't notice this until I cleaned it at home. It appears to be a bioimmured gastropod of some variety, existing as an impression on the oyster. These are some other bioimmured mollusks on Exogyra oysters I found. One is likely some variety of Turritellidae gastropod, while the other might be a type of Cardiidae bivalve. This is some material that contains what I believe could be trace fossils of burrows, but I'm not too sure. It also resembles the shape of some branching bryozoan fossils that are common in the area. This little chunk of material contains two unusual steinkerns! I'm wondering if the cone shaped one is from a type of limpet, but as far as the gastropod one goes I have no idea what it might be. There are some odd round shapes on the surface of it that are visible much more clearly under my new UV light. I wonder if it's a type of turban snail or whelk. And lastly, this is a chunk of Late Cretaceous Peedee Formation material containing a bunch of what I've always considered to be Heteropora bryozoan fragments and Exogyra fragments. However, the most interesting part of this cluster is the presence of appears to be a Biflustra bryozoan of some variety. I've seen them in Pleistocene material quite a bit, but never in the Cretaceous stuff. The surface detail shows better in the UV light. And as a bonus, these are just some of my nicer modern mollusks and a sand dollar I collected that weekend. Holden Beach is really good for modern specimens, and I've found quite a number of them there over the years. When I eventually start an album of my finds from my travels and work on my Waccamaw Formation collection, I might try to have a side-by-side comparison of them with their modern equivalent, closest relative or direct descendant, just to show any potential appearances they might have had before becoming fossils. And that's all I've got for now! I was considering going to Texas this spring with some friends, but I realized that was going to require too much time off of work to pull off, so I'll have to pass for now. I don't have anything planned before my family trip back to Holden in April, as well as a Virginia trip in May/June, but who knows what the future has in store.

    With the surprisingly warm weather early last week, I could not resist heading out for what is likely to be the last hunt of the season. Although I did not have the greatest luck on my last trip, I decided to hit the new Severn spot once again - and I couldn't be happier that I did! Upon arriving I was greeted by the open expanse of weathered marl, reminiscent of the western badlands despite the bustling city only a few miles away. Chunks of orange ironstone stood out against the dark Severn matrix and abundant Exogyra costata oysters littered the ground. The Exogyra often occur in small clusters, presumably what would have been oyster beds at the bottom of the shallow Cretaceous sea. A couple of poorly preserved Exogyra weathering out of the marl. Although I had collected a nice handful of Exogyra on my adventure at the site, I could not resist slipping another into the rucksack . The single Exogyra costata specimen collected on this trip. Although it is only a partial specimen, the bottom valve had a particularly interesting appearance. I wandered across the weathered slopes, keeping my eye out for my vertebrate quarry. Due to the poorly preserved nature of the fossils found at this site, I had an exceptionally difficult time differentiating fossils from suggestively shaped rocks. After the first hour, I had only collected about one piece that I felt was a fossil. Although the vertebrate remains remained elusive, I chanced upon an unexpected fossil - a nice chunk of lignite. The marl was rather rich in lignite, with carbonized remains of ancient plants appearing rather frequently. However, these tended to be highly fragmentary and would disintegrate at the slightest disturbance. A nice chunk of lignite that popped right out of the matrix. The lignite, indicative of a nearshore environment, hints at the exciting possibility of finding the remains of certain terrestrial Mesozoic reptiles in the Severn marls... After finding the chunk of lignite, the finds slowed once again. The misshapen ironstone concretions were certainly making their best bone impressions! . While investigating a cluster of Exogyra, I happened upon my first vertebrate fossil of the trip. A nice-sized shark tooth of a similar size to that recovered on my last trip. Based on responses to my last post, I am unsure if it would be appropriate to label this tooth as Scapanorhynchus sp. Any insight would be appreciated . Following the discovery of the first shark tooth, my eyes quickly began gravitating to the suddenly abundant fossils that littered the ground. It was not long before I had gathered a small sampling of surface-collected Severn shark teeth. A few more shark teeth found shortly after I happened upon the first. Unfortunately, the teeth are very poorly preserved and some smaller, brittle teeth disintegrated under the slightest pressure. A few of the smaller shark teeth. The poor preservation combined with the weathered condition of these teeth renders them almost unrecognizable. The shark tooth haul of the day. Along with the shark teeth, numerous white bone fragments littered the matrix. Although these initial seemed quite similar to the concretions and pebbles that lay alongside them, I gradually began to develop an eye for bone. Like the shark teeth, the bones were coated in a white, crusty covering and many were extremely fragile from constant weathering. A handful of fish vertebrae and some miscellaneous bone fragments. Some chunkosaurus, possibly from marine turtles or mosasaurs. The largest bone fragment of the day. This is likely too fragmentary to be identified, though I would be curious to see if any members have suggestions. A view from the end of the bone. What I have tentatively identified as a fish jaw section, possibly from a fish similar to Enchodus. Another intriguing bone fragment. After having spent several hours at the site, I was far more successful than I had been on the last trip. With my eyes attuned to the preservation of the fossils, I decided to give the place I had started at another try. I happened upon several bone fragments before my eyes landed on the last thing I expected to see weathering out of the steep slope... ...a large mosasaur vertebra! The processes were missing and it was badly weathered, but it was a season-maker. In my excitement, I forgot to take in-situ pictures, though it seemed to be little more than another concretion before I picked it up. The vertebra is quite busted up from being exposed to the elements, though some consolidation should help preserve it. Owing to its poor preservation, I do not know if an identification would be possible. In case there is a chance of ID, my understanding is that the three main species of mosasaur recognized from the Severn are Halisaurus platyspondylus, Mosasaurus condon, and Mosasaurus maximus. The vertebra seems to bear a resemblance to that of M. maximus, though the condition makes it very difficult to tell. Overcoming the initial excitement of the discovery, I had to wonder how many times I had walked over the vertebra... and what else I may have overlooked. Thanks for stopping by and happy hunting!

    Chronicles in the Maastrichtian

    It has been quite a while since I have written a trip report and I thought I'd share the results of some of my most recent fossiling adventures. Before diving into the fossils, this past weekend I had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage of the east coast. The Appalachians, usually quite unassuming hills that are nothing near the grandeur of the mountains to the north and west, were quite a sight to behold. The fall foliage was clearly quite popular, as I did not expect the entrance to Shenandoah National Park to be quite as backed up as it was. I made it up to the overlook as the sun was setting, as it is said that the colors are most impressive under the light of the westering sun. Unfortunately, the sun was mostly obscured by clouds, but the views were breathtaking nonetheless. Now, for what I am sure everyone has come here to see: the fossils! Over the past couple of months, I have acquired a renewed interest in the fossils of the Maastrichtian Severn formation of Maryland. As any who are familiar with this formation know, it is quite elusive and its most famous exposures were temporary construction sites in decades past. Several weeks ago, I visited a small creek that I had heard exposed the fossiliferous shell layer of the Severn. Initially, exploration of the creek did not seem promising and I only managed to locate only one poor exposure of the Severn at creek level. After some searching and many shell fragments later, I was rewarded with two relatively complete specimens: Crassatella vadosa Cyprimeria alta Although the yields had not been high, I was quite satisfied with these specimens due to the relative rarity of sites containing original-shell mollusks. A huge thanks to @historianmichael for identifying these specimens and for the preparation tips (unfortunately the shells have begun to crack but I am hoping they may remain salvageable). Inspired by my recent success and hoping for some vertebrate remains, I headed out to a new site. After taking quite a circuitous route through some woods and tall grass I made it to the exposure. The invertebrate fauna at this locality was not incredibly diverse, consisting almost wholly of the oyster Exogyra costata. A handful of Exogyra costata A more complete specimen of Exogyra costata with both valves intact. After encountering these first few Exogyra, I was left with a few hours to devote to searching for vertebrate remains. With my lack of experience with these fossils and their notoriously poor preservation, I only managed to recover a small selection of possible fragments. The entire haul of possible vertebrate remains. If any members have any insight on whether these are identifiable vertebrate remains, it would be greatly appreciated . Below are isolated photographs of some of the more intriguing finds of the day. This fragment bears some resemblance to a partial mosasaur tooth. However, it may be too fragmentary to assign a confident ID. Scapanorhynchus texanus I cannot say what this is, though I am hopeful that it might be bone. I believe that mosasaur and turtle remains can be found at this site. I am very grateful for any opinions. With the weather cooling I do not anticipate that I will be able to get out as often as I would like, but I hope to make a few more forays into the Severn before the year's end.   5. Hello all, I was looking for some help identifying this. I found this where they were putting a sewer main project amongst a large amount of exogyra fossil of excellent quality. It is chipped from excavator bucket. I included some photos of the exogyra fossils for reference. It appears to be a horn or some sort of toe bone? I found this on private land close to Government Canyons State Natural Area where there are multiple dinosaur footprints there. I believe it's Cretaceous era, whatever it is it. I am no expert but I can post additional photos or videos. Thank you
  6. Last January 12, I found some Exogyra sp. oysters in a limestone Late Campanian / Early Maastrichtian strata (SE Pyrenees, Catalonia, Spain), who turned to show abundant beekite rings. I owe to @abyssunder my knowledge of this mineral phenomenon, which, in my area,occurs mainly over laminar-type shells like oysters' (It can occur on other fossils, though). Have you fossils with beekite rings ?

    Browning Cretaceous Fossil Park 2022

    Dug into this park on Tuesday for a few hours. I really have no experience with Mesozoic strata, aside from Coon Creek of Tennesse. The water was inconsistent in it's depth due to a local beaver dam causing higher than normal water levels. Material here consists of unconsolidated clays, gravel and sand. Here are two large bivalves I recovered from the upper beds containing clams. I believe these are Exogyra costata which are common at this location. This tooth belongs to Scapanorhynchus texanus in which the teeth are referred to as belonging to goblin sharks. This is untrue, as this taxa is distantly related to modern goblins but I believe they are within the same family? This is a pair of small bivalves, species possibly being miniscule Gryphaeostrea vomer? A single Agerostrea mesenterica. Finally pictured below, an unknown, based on corrected advice it is a worn Pycnodonte. This trip was long, but the report ended up being brief due to the difficulty I had getting into the productive zones at this site. In which happened to be straight down, through the toughest clay I have ever seen. I did however end up meeting one of the park volunteers named Doug, who was more than helpful, he frequents the area and is very friendly.

    Holden Beach Diversity Of Fossils

    Recently got back from a trip on Holden Beach, and just WOW. Words can't describe the uniqueness of being able to find Mosasaur teeth next to Megalodon teeth. The recent Hurricane brought in many new fossils and I had quite good luck. Here are some photos of the trip, I will post a picture showing all of my best finds shortly, but for now enjoy! First, here are some of the Squalicorax pristodontus teeth I collected. These were relatively common.
  9. Went fossil hunting for the first time since Holden Beach in May this past Tuesday at Greens Mill Run in North Carolina. Found my best meg EVER!! A near perfect 3 and 15/16 incher (just missing a tad bit of enamel beneath the bourlette on the front). Most megs at GMR are already fragmented and/or worn down in-situ, so extra happy about this one! Also found a Ischyrhiza mira sawfish rostral tooth tip, a huge exogyra, and I believe a nice Chesapectens masidonius? Also a baleen whale ear bone fragment, and a brown item I think might be a worn cetacean ear bone? Also a piece of petrified wood, a gryphaea oyster, a shark vertebra with processes, a section of turtle plastron, and some other goodies.     Mystery Fossil Lumpkin, Georgia

    I have a real mystery fossil I found in 2004 from Lumpkin, Georgia. The formaton is the Upper Cretaceous Ripley FM. US 27 was being 4 laned and quite a bit of new material was exposed in the road cuts. I think I was within a quarter mile of either side of the well known Frog Bottom Creek Upper Cretaceous fossil site. I found Exogyra costata, Flemingostrea subspatulata, Pycnodonte mutabilis, casts and molds of gastropods and pelecypods,worm burrows, etc. The oysters have well preserved shells, and the rest of the shells are mainly impressions and casts. Originally I just glanced at the mystery fossil and thought it was a impression of a pecten and set it aside. I'm now organizing my fossil collections and upon closer inspection I realized it wasnt a shell impression. Any guesses on what this is? I have never seen anything like this in my lifetime of collecting.
  11. Hi, I live very close to big brook, NJ and have collecting many beautiful specimens of the oysters there. The oysters there are very unique, as they are some of the best and biggest of the species you can find in the world. I have many various specimens. Ill take any request for size, look, style as they all look different. Perhaps some like a more wavy pattern or separated pattern or a bubbly pattern. Im interested in anything you have to offer! I attached various pics to see. Although I have many and some even better.

  17. Took a trip to eastern part of North Sulfur River near Cooper this afternoon. Water levels pretty low. About foot deep in most places. After walking down the bridge, I immediately noticed huge amounts of Exogyra oysters exposed everywhere. I usually find smaller ones in the past, but this time there were some huge ones that measures 6 inches across and weights 5 pounds lying on the surface. I only grabbed the ones that were less worn for my collection. There are still large amount everywhere.

    Shell with Embedded Something

    I have an Exogyra costata from the Peedee Form.(Maastrichtian) in North Carolina that has an oddity embedded in the right valve. It is not a shell or barnacle attached to the surface, and is almost perfectly round ,unlike any boring clams I have seen. I have picked ( dental probe) around the oddity to confirm it has depth and is not a surface attachment. It appears it was hollow as it is now filled with hard sediment. It has been suggested this may be an example of bioimmuration of some sort. Anyone have any ideas ? Thanks.
