This rock is listed as "Ocadia messeliana" fossil turtle from Messel, but is obviously a septarian nodule (you can clearly recognise it by the patterns and by the fact that there isn't a shell). It is indeed at first glance very similar to a turtle, but is not.

Is this a fake trilobite fossil?
Ekuzo posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey guys, Recently my friend bought a trilobite and the seller told him it was a reedops, but I checked some pictures on the website and found that it should be a drotops? Both eyes showing good details but still quite doubt that this one is a fake trilobite cuz the seller just gave him a wrong information. I don't have any experience on how to recognize these kind of fossils. The last picture was send to him by the seller. Please help me T T Many thanks!! -
I bought this egg from years ago Do you think this egg from henan is genuine? I'm concerned about the texture that seems too glossy IF this egg is real May I know this egg ID? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi there i continue to maintain my very very amateur status but I've been trying to read the different threads on here regarding spinosaurus jaw and what I gathered so far is pitting is reflective of croc jaw and if it only has a single socket or also makes it difficult to determine if its spino or croc. I found this one on our favorite auction site and wanted to get your opinion

I bought this YEARS ago and it has been sitting on a shelf ever since. Never took the time to verify it's authenticity, but from what I have seen on this site it definitely appears to be fake.

Is this Trilobite Metacanthina real?
Mightytrex posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone! New to the forum. I went to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum last summer and purchased this Trilobite in their giftshop. I just realized it may be a fake. Looking at it closer I think I may be correct... can someone please help me out to see if it is real or fake. I would really appreciate it. Being the Smithsonian I thought it would be real. I saw no information tags saying it was not real so Im not sure. Thanks!- 12 replies

Ammonite plate - real or fake
Rvald005 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello! i posted a different real or fake question earlier (brittle starfish) and was told It was fake and to keep looking for other gifts. It was suggested that it’s better to be safe than sorry and to post other items I’m interested in. Since i really appreciated the input last time, I’m here to ask again This time it’s a zoom in of an ammonite slab (holzmaden shale from Germany). It looks real to me but I just wanted to check. Thanks for all the help in gift searching!! -
Geocoma Carinata (brittle starfish) real or carved?
Rvald005 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone! first time poster here. I wanted to gather some opinions on whether this is a genuine or carved brittle starfish. I found it for sale online and wanted to purchase it for my collector wife (as a surprise). However, I heard/read there are many fake fossils and I don’t have enough confidence to make a call on its authenticity. What do you all think? thanks a lot for the help and advice. -Robert- 8 replies

Spinosaurus tooth? Just got into fossils...
KDD posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I bought this one already, my very first fossil of any kind. Is there anything that sets off any alarms? I know people usually enquire about longer teeth which might show signs of extension, but I would feel better just making sure. I also have my eyes set on a batch of 5. From what little I've researched, those 5 set off more alarm bells but I'm at my max total for attachments. -
Genuine theropod dinosaur eggs?
MohammadAAK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all! ive recently purchased this piece (I know I should have consulted beforehand) but I only saw it the last minute before the auction ended. I would still love some insight on it and maybe an actual idea of its locality and species (or genera). The seller claims there is no restoration other than gluing different parts together. He also claims its Enlongatoolithidae either raptor or oviraptor or other therapoda. I would love to have better information on it and even its locality in China, since I assume that’s where it’s from. The fossil is 15 cm long. Unfortunately these are the best photos I could get for the timebeing until it arrives. Best wishes to all, Mohammed -
Meg tooth authentication
operatorexe posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey everyone, I'm new to the site so hopefully I read all the posting rules correctly. Having said that, I was given this meg tooth as a gift. I am unsure however if it is real as it's missing the serrated edges and has a remarkable polish that gives it a glassy texture. I am not aware of any restoration methods or what not when it comes to selling to the general public so I can only go off my own knowledge of meg teeth. It's also heavier than my phone. Is there anyone who could maybe point out some red flags (or green ones!) to let me know if she was sold a replica? I can also add more images if need be. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1bcvrtv7m6d7q13/AAD-RcmDpOCMgeJ6aJ_Xh40Pa?dl=0 Please click that link to view all 6 images. (For some reason I can't upload them here) -
Just got an offer for this 5 Megs. Do they look suspicious? I don`t have any experience with Megs from this location. Thanks

Can someone tell me if this is legit?
setix posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I am looking into building a project for my partner, and she loves the Stegosaurus...so I go looking at whats out there....seems like fossil dorsal armor plates are extremely pricey and other fossils are rare. I know many of them come out of the Morrison Formation and I found some small fossils for sale that claim they are neck scutes...but they are VERY small and the price seems ridiculously low for how rare they are supposed to be. Is there anyway to tell if these are real and actually from the correct species?- 13 replies

Real machairodus/smilodon teeth?
MohammadAAK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all, Recently I purchased a pair of tooth from a seller who sold me real keichousaurus and another real frog fossil based on forum opinions. He says this pair is from the same animal. I don’t even know if it’s Smilodon or Machairodus, nor do I have information about locality except that it was originally from China. Main reason I’m asking the forum is that as this is my first time owning saber cat teeth I’m not sure if they are always this light? 31-33 grams per piece only. It doesn’t seem cast with the great amount of detail. And about restoration it was broken and repaired, which is what the seller also said. Best wishes- 10 replies

Keichousaurus or an impostor
Yan11 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi, In 2013 I bought a keichosaurus fossil from online , and since then I haven't thought much of it, after me and my mum and dad moved to a new apartment the fossil got somewhat forgotten, but today I tried inspecting it. I read some of the treads here but even with this I can't decide if mine is a real or a fake one. From what I have gathered there aren't many outright fakes, but more so real ones that are enhanced. I will be glad to hear your opinion on the pictures (sorry for the poor quality but I had to use my phone). Any response will be very much appreciated. Best regards to everybody. -
Hello everyone! I just bought this fossil and I was wondering if it is real or if it has some kind of reconstruction since I know about all the fakes and composite pieces that come from morocco. Thank you very much for your help I love how this forum is always so alive and full of content and people willing to share their knowledge with the community. Best regards Close look to one tooth:

Real frog (Liaobatracus sp.)?
MohammadAAK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello, I was offered a couple of fossils and this is the second one to the previous keichousaurus post. It’s a fossil frog, genus Liaobatracus, from early Cretaceous, Yixian formation, Liaoning province, China, exported in the 80s. 20 cm. Any ideas whether it’s a genuine piece. These are the best photos I was able to get. Best wishes -
Hello all, i was offered this keichousaurus and was wondering if someone has an idea if it’s authentic, judging from the photos only. The seller describes it as museum quality. And it’s supposed to be seven inches. These are the best photos I was able to get. It is supposedly from China from an old collection exported in the 80s. Best wishes

Genuine theropod dinosaur egg?
MohammadAAK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all, I saw one seller online listing this piece for auction. I'm interested in bidding but the fact the seller is from Taiwan worries me. Other than that, the egg looks nice. Seller says it might be a small tyrannosaurus or large therapod egg. Locality is noted as "East Asia", which I assume is china. And the description says this is from an old Chinese collection exported in the 80s. Cretaceous of East Asia. Best wishes -

Mosasaurus - lower jaw?
Berkeleybengal posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Could experts share the primary indicators to check for regarding authenticity of a Mosasaurus jaw specimen? - specifically root / tooth junctures. I’m aware of the sophistication of fakes in the market. Below is a recent purchase - I’d like feedback on details to look for in verifying authenticity. Thank you!- 11 replies
