Hi guys! First things first, I've been following this forum (and this section inter alia) for a good year, I simply love the community, so I decided to join it and actively participate instead of being just an external viewer. I'm not a fossil expert, but I'm willing to learn and I'll do my best to improve. But I guess that since this is a fossil lovers community, it's fossils what you want to see. Well... I inherited from a granduncle of mine a LOT of minerals -geodes, crystals, nuggets etc- and fossils (I hope I can show you my collection over time), including ammonites -guess that guy litterally LOVED ammonites- of all shapes and sizes, dinosaur, shark and mammoth teeth, amber with insect inclusions and many many other things... including trilobites. The largest trilobite I got is this: it's a 27x17x4cm piece, not the best I've seen in my life but still pretty good IMO. No idea of where he got it, nor when, not even how much he paid for it. Still, I'm pretty sure it's a fake. But before officially confirming that my granduncle threw his money away with this, I'd like to ask you a second opinion. Thanks for your help, I'm sure he would really appreciate it (pretty sure atm he's resting in Paradise, surrounded by his beloved ammonites). (if you'd like to see more photos, just ask)

Hello! I’m new here and I was wondering if anyone here could help me. I’m a complete novice to all of this and the reason I’m here is because I wanted to buy my brother some Spinosaurus teeth as a gift, as they are his favorite, but I wanted to make sure what I’m buying is authentic or if it’s been repaired. I hope I’ve found a reputable site, but I would like to ask anyone’s opinion just to be on the safe side. The first one is 2.67 long. The second is 2.61. Both are said to be from the Kem Kem Beds. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Real or Fake Pteranodon Preserved In Amber?

Awhile ago there was the craze about having an alleged partial dinosaur tail preserved in amber, then there was the ammonite and crinoids preserved in amber, but recently I have been seeing reports about a complete pteranodon that was found preserved in amber and that was set to be auctioned off. Over the past few months I have not seen any more reports about it and was wondering if anyone knew if it was a hoax (I imagine it was), or if someone out there really does now own this one-of-a-kind specimen? -

Greetings, I recently acquired a big spinosaurus claw from a moroccan seller at a fossils and minerals event in Barcelona, Spain, called Expominer. I was quite happy with the purchase until a friend of mine told me that it could be a fake claw carved from a bone, but he is not sure, I have been checking similar spinosaurus claws on catawiki and they are sold as real dinosaur claws... What do you think? Thank you very much.

Old box of shark tooth “fossils”

I recently found a small box of shark teeth that I obtained when I was a kid. It turns out that the labels, when translated from Spanish described the features of the fossils and not the actual species. Quite a number were not even true fossils they were mislabeled recently extinct species. Moral of this story: kids are dumb, and don’t buy fossils unless their labeled with the Latin name. -
Is this a fake keichousaurus?

Hey guys, first time posting here, just hoping you could help me. I bought a keichousaurus for €300 and It came today, but I only came across the fact that they could be faked soon after buying (panic). The seller was from a reputable online store and it was part of a well known private collection that was disbanded. It came with an authenticity cert and was guaranteed to be real. Looking at everyone else’s specimens I am slightly worried/disheartened about the condition of my own. It is painted heavily I realise and I’m wondering what everyone thinks of it. Is it worth keeping or should I try sell it? Feeling slightly disheartened as I feel like I’m not even looking at bone, just all paint, and Its been a life long dream to be able to have my own fossil like this. And besides, as a grad student, I paid a lot for it which really took a lot of budgeting so it all lands a little harder. Any (hopefully good) thoughts/comments are welcome! Thank you! -
Hello, I've read some topics on this forum about how to recognise fake trilobites. These specimens I received as a gift so I don't know how much was paid for them but I think some parts are 'fake' or composits. I don't even know the names of these cuties. From the second piece I found that the eyes were made of resin (I heated up a needle and scratched a bit).

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to collecting and have gotten most of my fossils so far from one website that I think is reputable. I am trying out a website that I have purchased one fossil from already because I am interested in getting a dinosaur egg. It is a little pricey, so I just wanted to get some reassurance that it's the real deal before I pay for it. It says in the description that the original owner bought it 30 years ago and that its location of origin is unknown, which made me a little suspicious. I would greatly appreciate if I could get a little direction on this one before making a commitment.

Hello everyone, this is my first post on the website though I've browsed many threads for useful information. I've been collecting fossils for years but only recently got into dinosaur fossils. Anyway, I bought this supposed Thescelosaurus dorsal vertebrae from a reputable shop that I've been a patron at for years. Everything until this that I have bought from there has been authentic, so when I wanted to buy a nicely preserved vertebrae as a center piece for my display, I didn't look this over enough before I bought it, having sort of trusted this store. Took a little look at it, it was packed for me and I was out the door. Got busy with work, didn't even take it out of the box for a week. When I finally did, it felt really light, lighter than fragmented dino bone fossils I have only half it's size, and when I tapped it, the vibration sort of sustained. Obviously shouldn't happen with a rock. Seen paint brush marks, which was the red flag that got me to do the following because who would paint an authentic fossil? Curiosity was killing me, so I decided to make a small break in it to see what the inside of the bone looked like, because seeing the middle would make it more obvious, and I was absolutely floored to find metal wire holding it together. Broke a few more pieces off, more wire. Nothing porous that would indicate it was even pieced together as parts of bone with fill in parts on or around it or inbetween the pieces, it seems to be completely fake. So long story short, seems I was duped. I'm going to mess with it some more today and see if there is ANY bone at all in this supposed vertebrae. "All sales final" with the store. A young idiot with more money than knowledge. (It wasn't cheap) I'll have to do a lot more research and be much more careful when I buy, and sort of made me mistrust any specimen I haven't surface collected myself. Just thought I'd share and ask if anyone has seen anything like this.

Good Morning everyone, I have a toddler who recently got very much into dinosaurs and fossils which eventually brought back all my childhood afflictions and memories to same. We stopped my a small fossil shop near Austin where we both went crazy with all the variety. Needless to say he got some very nice, small items. I spent quite a lot on a few pieces with the hype and childhood yearn to always have in possession a few Real items. Upon our arrival at home and in closer inspection as well as researching online, I'm not sure if I purchased authentic fossils. PLEASE HELP ME! My first post with is a Megalodon Tooth that he said was fused on a crack. I’ll post some others thereafter.

Hey guys! Bought a Meg tooth from a trusted seller for my soon, but for some reason I want to confirm it is real. Here are a couple images. It is about 5.6inch in length and weights 1lb 8oz or 0.6kg. Looks great when I hold it but as you know they make great fakes... so if anyone can spot something please let me know. Thanks!

I am seriously stumped with this one. Maybe you folks can help me out. I found this during the weekend out near the bottom of the panhandle in the Jurassic Triassic undivided. It was found when sifting rubble through my mesh net and I won’t lie when I say I leapt with excitement when I found it. but... the more I look at it the more it seems like there is something off about it. For one, I already tried looking up known dinosaur fossils found in that region of Texas and I cannot find a tooth looking similar to this one. This tooth also doesn’t have the same coloration that other fossilized Dino teeth seem to have. The distinction between the crown and the root looks odd to me, and finally, the tooth is conical, with no notable serrations. This led me to begin wondering if it was possibly a fake?? I have heard of people planting fake meg teeth along beach shores but never out in the middle of nowhere. The tooth is hard, and I’ve tried a scratch test to see if there was any paint or epoxy and it doesn’t seem to have any. So what do you guys think? Any help is appreciated!

Hello everyone, First of all I must say that I’m new to buying fossils and that I know nothing about Ammonites. Recently I saw this Ammonite laying around in a small home decor shop. I immediately loved it, so I decided to purchase it. However, I’ve got a suspicion that this one is fake (or at least heavily sculpted), for the following reasons: 1. It was quite cheap. The certified ones I’ve seen on the internet (same size, same price) are much less detailed than this one. 2. It has ‘flaking’ layers and some cracks (see close up pictures) 3. It just looks a little bit too perfect compared with the ones I’ve seen on the internet. I wouldn’t really mind if it were fake, because it just looks really cool. This is a “pterosaurs” jaw I got as a gift a little bit ago. It was sold as a pterosaurs jaw with composite teeth the species is Siroccopteryx But Am almost 100% sure that it is wrongly identified it looks like a crocodile jaw maybe. So if someone can help me identify the jaw that would be amazing.

Turtles from China...again

Manchurochelys liaoxiensis from Liaoning province. These turtles have shown up in the forum before, some with the conclusion they are real, some not. Here is an incredible display of turtles with fish! However, I am highly skeptical despite coming from a reputable source. They seem to have a halo of color all the way around them. On extreme angles there are some parts where the shell is not attached to the matrix. Even the fish are "on" the matrix, not in it. It is not resin, as I have exposed many parts to a soldering iron. The crack on that back seems to run under, not through, the turtles but is visible on the front where the turtles are not. It even runs under, not through, a limb. To me, a best case scenario is that these "real" fossils were placed onto a stone slab, but that seems like a lot of unnecessary work. If the turtles are casts that are put onto the matrix, is there an easy way to tell? Would x-ray be useful as the turtle and the matrix are likely different densities if the turtles were added on? And can anyone recognize the fish? If they are millions of years apart, that might answer the question. but where are the heads of the fish?
