Hi, I am not an expert, so I decided to ask for help in this forum. My Dream is to buy real fossils so I found a website with some interesting fossils, a keichosaurus and three Megalodon teeth. Can you help me to recognise if they are real fossils or not? thank you very much!

Hi all. eBay is generally a good website for us to get fossil specimens as long as we do the proper research, and seek out reputable sellers. However, certain fossils pop up every now and then that are obvious fakes, and not every buyer is diligent enough to know so. What we can do is to report these listings. Believe it or not, sometimes they do get taken down. To begin, say you notice a fossil you know is fake. Click on Report Item on the top right, it's above the eBay item number. eBay takes you to another screen: Choose Listing practices > Fraudulent listing activities > You suspect that a listing is fraudulent Hit Continue, and you'll be given an item number. Hit 'Send Report'. You do not need to be a bidder to make this report. You'll know the report is made when you're taken to this new screen: Ultimately, the best practice if you shop on eBay is to do your due research. Ask the experts here; they are more than willing to point out when a fossil is fake. I've personally saved thousands just by helpful advice here. Also, if you notice any fake fossils, do us a favor as well by posting about it here, but do not mention the seller's name or identity; we are here to learn, not conduct a witch hunt. Good luck

Is it a real Keichousaurus?
Ita97 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi, I found this fossil sold online, what are your opinions about it? In general, are auction sites good websites to buy fossils or have you a website to suggest where I can buy fossils original? Thank you for your help!! -
Two claw fossils - real or fake?
Norholt posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi all, I picked up a Lot of 15 fossils and one very large whale vertebrae at an auction recently. Sadly it had all been treated as junk and several fossilised teeth had been broken, one tip lost, no identification or history attributed to the items. I find it quite sad when a fossil survives for 100+ million years in nature then gets wrecked immediately in someone’s care because it doesn’t make as much money as a pair of earrings . Anyway, going off topic... so I have this group of unloved fossils - teeth, vertebrae, bone - which I will probably never be able to fully identify. Amongst them all are two claws and I can’t tell if they are real or fake. They are about 3” long, light (21 and 25g), feel brittle and not very dense (like clay though they are obviously not clay). They are not resin or plastic. The thicker claw seems to have a seam around the middle as though two halves have been glued together. What are your thoughts? How do I find out more? I’ll post the other fossils in the ID forum. Many thanks. -
A while ago I purchased this hadrosaur tooth under the label "Parasaurolophus". The dealer said the tooth came from the Judith River Formation and appears to have the rippled side found in other pictures labeled as Parasaurolophus. My other hadrosaur teeth appear to be indeterminate, but this one seems unique, albeit in rough shape though. Can anyone verify that this is in fact Parasaurolophus? Thanks!

"Auronis" Xui (sort of)
Ezio Bonsignore posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Beyond the mispelled name (Auronis in lieu of Aurornis) this horrible thing is clearly described by the seller as a fake, so there is no need of further discussions on that. I'm however curious about 1) the tecnique used, and 2) the commercial logic of producing such things and then selling them as fakes. It doesn't seem carved to me, and the posture is identical to the well-know first fossil that led to the species being identified. Perhaps someone managed to obtain a negative cast of the original, and now is using it as a mould to produce "n" copies? In any case, the whole affair requires a not wholly insignificant investment in time and money - while the plate is being offered at a starting price of [price redacted] and I doubt very much whether it would sell. On the other hand, the carved fake crab fossils out of Indonesia require even more manual work and dexterity, yet people keep producing and I must assume selling these. Go figure... -
Suspect Eldregeops on Matrix
A.C. posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey all, I have a fossil in my collection that has a fossil on matrix. I am unsure as to if this fossil was placed there unnaturally or not. Under black light no obvious signs of glue (nothing glows) Though the suspect part to me is what appears to be holes or bubbles on the rock at the base of the specimen. I guess it’s possible that the specimen was completely removed cleaned and popped back on, or it is possible that the specimen was found and later placed on this matrix. What are the chances though that this fossil and matrix go together and have never been separated? -
RED FLAG: fake insects and amphibians
glu posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
On our famous auction site just popped out some incredibly detailed fossil insects and amphibians. Although there are no info from the seller (who probably got them without being aware of what they are), those are unfortunately not real. The matrix is clearly a limestone from Solnhofen, easily recognisable by the floating crinods (Saccocoma) and by manganese dendrites. There are highly detailed insect on them that have never been found in Solnhofen (including a giant spider). Also the amphibian column is probably a fish spine. There are already some bids on them, but please be aware. Also let me know what do you think -
Oviraptor egg, real? or fake?
Riollo posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi all, Well here it is. Oviraptor egg from a 30 year old collection located in the United States. Bought first and read posts on here about fakes later. Smart right? I'll attach pictures but my concerns are 1. It isn't pancaked like most ones I see, 2. Texture changes on the surface could be matrix repairs, 3. On broken areas shell thickness is not consistent. I'll add the best pictures I can. Almost looks like it was painted in the last picture. Thoughts on this would be appreciated. Good or bad lol. -
Real or fake? It’s a nice looking piece, so I might be interested in it still if it is a cast or a combo, but also don’t want to overpay if that’s the case.

Hey y’all, I just wanted to know if this tooth is real or not . My dad bought it for me as a kid at a fair in Virginia in 2013 . As you can see it’s not in the best of shape . But this tooth holds a lot of sentimental value because this tooth sparked my interest in fossil collecting and I just want to know if it’s real or not. I would love any thoughts and input .

Mosasaur Jaw? Real or fake.
Spirit posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey everyone! I made an account just to ask this question from some real experts: is this Mosasaur jaw real? I bought a tooth from the same shop and the matrix looked the same: some bones scattered about in the dirt and rock. (It’s the one right under my pinkie I’m the image) I’m a little thrown off because, well firstly, the shop traveled to vendor at a fair and that seems a little suspicious. Secondly, they’re selling other items that are commonly faked from Morocco like Trilobites. I really want this to be real but I can’t justify buying a fake… -
hi folks, Im thinking of buying a cluster of Oviraptor from a seller who says he got these at a gem/fossil show over 10 years ago. He says he preps fossils and has extensive experience but has not finished prepping these particular eggs and won't get around to abrading them out of the matrix. I told him they are fake but he insists they are not, so I wanted to put it to the test here. thanks for your help.

Mazon Creek Fossil jelly fish
Unknowncat posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello everyone, I hope everyone is doing well I have recently started getting myself into collecting fossils and I came upon this lot of jellyfish fossils so I purchased them because they seemed interesting and it’s something I never had. Do these look fine ? To me they just look like stained rocks but that could just be because jellyfish are soft bodied organisms. Thanks for your input -
Is this a real dinosaur egg?
Kyleontheweb posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello, I apologize in advance as I'm sure questions like this come up a lot. I'm thinking about purchasing this dinosaur egg which I believe is from a fairly reputable seller. I've always wanted a real dinosaur egg for my collection, but I just wanted to get some opinions on whether you think this one is real or a fake? Thank you very much for any assistance! -
Hi there members of this forum! Made the mistake(prety probably) and impulse bought this piece, which went by the name: "Mosasaur Dinosaur Jaw Teeth fossile" Im not shure it said from Morocco, but most stuff in the shop was there,so this one is probably i guess... My First Megalodon Teeth
Cavalier posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello all. My first purchase. I'm pretty confident of they're authenticity. But I just want any concern settled. Slight impulse buy as they were in an auction and it almost ended. Tooth #1: Actually has sand still stuck in its crevices and still smells like the sea. This might make it an obvious real specimen but I don't know how far fakers are willing to go. The white striations are a lot more prominent in the pictures. They don't really look like that in person. Polishing compound? Reportedly Otodus Megalodon from South Carolina. Tooth #2: Very little sand can be seen. A lot cleaner. No odor. Same deal with the white lines (cracks) in enamel. Reportedly Otodus Megalodon, about the Miocene period. South Carolina. Though I thought the Otodus and Miocene period occured at different times. Can't find a definitive answer. -
I got this fossil today. But it looks a little bit suspicious to me. Especially the color and the light yellow tips of the brittle star. Can you please have a look for me? Thanks.

Are they real? Hollardops + Barrendeops
Marco90 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Recently I've read about fake Moroccan trilobites, so I'm afraid every fossil in my collection is fake Could you help me figure out if these two specimen are genuine or not? One is Hollardops, the other a Barrendeops (I think). -
