Hello. I bough this item from a fossil shop in France years ago. I am wondering whether it is Drotops megalomanicus and more importantly if it is a fake. I hope you can tell from the photos. Recently members Coco and JBKansas helped me identify some fake ammonites I thought were real fossils. Thank you in advance for your reply. Constantinos.

Hello everyone, I'm a novice considering an online purchase. In my corner of the world even poor quality fossils are few and far between both online and and in shops, so I haven't had much oppotunity to get a feel for what's genuine or decent quality and could use some advice. The tooth is listed as a Dromaeosaurus from the not very specific location of North africa. I'd of course prefer if the location was properly specified, but because I rarely see anything worth purchasing, I've ended up considering this tooth in spite of that. I'm wondering whether the tooth h

Real or fake trilobite from Morocco?

Hello everybody! Someone offered me a Scabrella to buy... As it is a rare trilobite I have doubts about its authenticity. Can you help me? Please! -
Mosasaur - help needed what is real or fake
ray67 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
HI everybody, so i´m quite new in the fossil collecting business and started watching some auctions on an auction site, recently. My one and only fossil finding event was some years ago in the south of morocco with my wife in a jeep, where we could find trilobites easy on the side of the desert tracks. one of the locals also showed us the "production" of the 100´s of trilobites they sold as souvenirs, mostly made by casts... Well, what i´m looking for now is a selection of maybe a (or 2) handful nice objects of good size and quality, and one of this pieces sho -

Hi all, Found this on display at a store in NYC, which from what I've heard is quite reputable, but it looks fake to me. It's about four inches in length. Thank you very much for the help.

Attached are a few pictures of woolly mammoth teeth. Some of the pictures are real (per the seller) and some are replicas. My question is without additional information (which I think a seller could fabricate) how can you tell the real from the replica?! Thank you!

Dear all As a non-scientist I´d be glad if I could get your opinion on the authenticity of a Carcharocles megalodon tooth I have purchased off an auction site. It is missing some part, so I could get it for a reasonable price since the spotless teeth are way out my budget. Do you think this tooth could be legit? Many thanks for your expertise.

A month or so ago I've acquired what seems to be a fairly solid Eurypterus Tetragrammatus specimen for a pretty bargain price, but now I'm a bit curious as to the authenticity. I'm not very familiar with eurypterid forgeries, and the main thing really that's causing some suspicion in me is the prepwork - is this how prepwork marks can actually look like? There's also the fact that there's no multiple appendages, but that I can explain away by only partial preservation. Here's photos. I was too lazy to put a scale mark, but I think that it's not really relevant here. Hopefully I have not

Feather and Skin in Burmite Amber
Rikache posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi there everyone! I’ve been wanting to expand my amber specimen collection for quite some time now and I recently came across a seller (which will remain unnamed per the forum rules) with some very interesting and unique listings posted on their page. I’ve included images of the specimens below; I was really hoping that y’all could give them a look and let me know what y’all think. The first specimen looks to have a lizard/snake skin inclusion. The second specimen contains small feather inclusions along with some even smaller organic matter. Both of these specimens are -

Keichousaurus fossil Real or Fake
Chris Kimo posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I'm looking at purchasing this little fellow and I basically wanted some third party views on the legitimacy of the fossil. Here's my thoughts. The layout of the fossil looks different to fakes that I've seen as it is hunched over on itself in quite a natural death pose meaning the fossilised bone is stacked a little on parts. I believe this would be difficult to fake and also what's the point making your work harder when producing fakes. Also the small size and amount of detail included makes me think its real. The other detail that makes me belive it could be authentic is that the tiny tail- 2 replies

Trilobites- poorly prepared or fake
Kribensis posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
These fossils I purchased prior to 2005. At the time I thought I was buying poorly prepared trilobite fossils. I wanted some trilobites and didn’t want to pay a lot as they weren’t a central part of my collection. Recently, I saw a website, that also sold trilobites, stating that trilobites that looked similar to these were clearly fake. So fake or poorly prepared? Appreciate your help -
I need some input to help determine if this oviraptor egg is real or fake. Supposedly there is some fossilized bone visible suggesting an embryo. I fully recognize how incredibly rare this is and I’m very much leaning toward fake, but I’d love to get a more experienced opinion.

Real/fake? Megalodon tooth.
Stagz4312 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Recently was handed down a Megalodon tooth. Started doing a little research on megalodon teeth, and noticed people make replicas/fakes. I am no expert on shark teeth. So, I just wanted to reach out and see if anyone with expertise could determine if the tooth I have acquired is a replica or real. thank you!- 8 replies

Is my trilobite real?
Muffinsaurus posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
A weekend trip lead to my wife asking me to pick out a trilobite fossil as a gift. I looked as close as I could in the somewhat dimly lit building and found one I liked and was fairly sure it was real at the time. Even the tag started it was authentic. While doing research about metacanthina issoumourensis I noticed online prices and the price she paid for it were vastly different. Red flags went off and I started looking the item over closely. I know in my heart of hearts it has to be a fake. However I'm still a novice at best and I could very well be wrong. I'm hoping I'm wrong. -
Juvenile Psittacosaurus - real or fake?
Tressmeister posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone! I would like to know your opinions on the following Psittacosaurus mongoliensis specimen. Found in Liaoning, China. Size about 20cm long and ~1kg heavy. I see there's quite a lot of glue/consolidant here. I know some are carved and many are composites but I would like to know your opinions. Is this real or fake? Your input is highly appreciated. Cheers! -
Kem Kem dinosaur bone
BirdsAreDinosaurs posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi all. This specimen is advertised online as a dinosaur metacarpal from Taouz. I don't know much about Maroccan dinosaur bones, but I wouldn't be surprised if this bone a complete fake, composited or heavily restored (some areas appear very smooth) item. Pictures are pretty bad, but it is all I have got. What do you think? If it is real, would it be possible to id it to some level? Thanks! -
As the title says, I have this partial skull being offered to me and was wondering if any or all of it looked faked? Those teeth set off my alarm a bit as they look awfully big for ictitherium, or am I incorrect in that assessment?

Authenticity of some invertebrate fossils
Vytis posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I recently was given some fossils and just wanted to know their authenticity. I took two pictures of each fossil at different positions (not sure what the clam looking one could be). This is my first time on the forum, and I am looking forwards to also sharing some of my Midwestern and Lithuanian finds in the future. -
Real Fossil Hadrosaur Egg
AJS92444 posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello! A local rock shop has a fossil hadrosaur egg for sale that I’m very interested in. I know eggs are some of the most faked fossils out there, so before I spend money [price redacted] I’d like to get some input from experienced collectors whether or not they believe it’s a fake or the real deal. Thank you to all who respond! -
So I just bought this of a marketplace, the seller claimed all their pieces were real. Its supposed to be from a Suchomimus tenerensis. I know zero to nothing about fossils but I thought this was really cool so I bought it. The inside appears to be a layer of hard sand, wich is weird to me as ive never seen this on a fossil. Could this be an indication of a fake? Someone else already pointed out that the little holes can be a sign of a casting. Would love some extra opinions.
