Mosasaurus skull from the Atlas Mountains, Morocco
BagelSquirrel posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
While browsing for Mosasaurus fossils, I came across a complete Mosasaur skull. I thought this to be rather unusual, especially since it wasn't extremely expensive. The seller listed it for around [price redacted] dollars, which I believe to be rather cheap. The seller claims that it is a real skull and that it has had a bit of reconstruction done on it. The deal seems a bit too good to be true, especially since it's coming from Morocco, which alone is a red flag. Should I purchase it, or will I get scammed by a fake? -
Newbie impulse purchase.
Dockster posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Made an impulse buy, and need a critique to use as a learning experience. I believe these fossils are real (prob from Morocco), but I believe they have been placed in an unknown matrix for display. The seller said she believed they were probably excavated this way then material removed for better viewing. I’m asking for any info to expand my knowledge. -
Fossil fish, fake or just painted?
kmosaurusrex posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi y'all, Was gifted this piece randomly, which was bought at an antique style store. The store made no claims to it being authentic, but I'm wondering if there's a possibility it is? I admit I know literally nothing about fossils or fossil identification, I just used Google lens to see if it would pull up an exact copy as a quick first test. It didn't pull up this exact piece, but did pull up a previous discussion on this forum where somebody else was trying to determine if their fossil fish was real and it was, although it was painted. Is that the case here as well, or is this just a fun replica? Thank you all so much in advance for sharing your knowledge with a total newbie!- 5 replies

Not another keichousaurus - sorry but need help
fossil_fun posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello! Sorry to add another keichousaurus to the forum but I was hoping to get some help. I've always wanted one of these but have never done it because I am worried it might be fake. So, if anyone could provide input, I would be super grateful. I looked at the things to look for both in reals and fakes and nothing really stood out to me about either being real or fake. I am okay with slight restoration but would like it to be as authentic as possible of course. I cropped the picture to respect the identity of the collector and dealer but some of you may have seen this, haha. Thanks in advance forum!- 7 replies

Curious to know how fake this piece is. Color enhanced feels like a given, but is any part of it real? Thank you in advance.

Real or Fake (Drotops megalomanicus) ?
Jacobboom posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
After recent lessons about fake Drotops Armatus, I try to be as cautious as possible when making new purchases. I recently found a really nice double Drotops megalomanicus for sell. To me, it is just too pretty to ignore. But since this is my first time seeing such specimen (two huge Drotops megalomanicus stacking together), I think it is better to ask for options before making the expensive commitment. To me, this looks like a real one because of the white line (silica vein) running across the body. But a draw back is the not so detailed eyes, which seems suspicious. Let me know your opinions! -
Is this Drotops Armatus real?
Jacobboom posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
I recently spent [price redacted) on this Drotops Armatus from an USA fossil dealer. But when I received it, I became very suspicious. First, I examined it clearly and there isn't any sign of cracking and glueing, which is pretty unusual based on my knowledge. Second, the color is just too brown. Seller claimed this specimen is from Altchana formation, but I never seen such color in any other Morocco trilobites. Third, there are around 10-20 tiny little holes (less than 0.5mm) on the bug surface, which looked very suspicious. Seller claimed these holes are caused by sand blaster. Can I trust this specimen? Very worried and want some advice! IMG_5745.HEIC IMG_5746.HEIC- 11 replies

Hello, I'm from Austria (Europe). And this is my first time here on the forum. When I was 10 years old, in addition to the dozens of bones, I also found a cave bear canine tooth (tip with end of enamel: almost 4cm with root 6cm) in the dragons cave near Mixnitz in Styria. I never made such a great find again: that was the end of my short excavation career. In the last years I've only bought small things: trilobites, amonites and this week I stumbled upon the fish. I bought the petrified fish as a gift for a special occasion. Indicated from the dealer: fossilized fish (Pricacara liops), Green River, Wyoiming, USA, Tertiary, Eocene, approximately 42 million years. Size Fossil: 40.5 cm (I measured the body axis, not the matrix). Matrix (rock slab): 45,5 cm (length, upper longer edge) x 28,5 cm (average) At first Priscacara liops seems wrong to me because it is smaller. In't it? Priscacara serrata grows to about 37 cm tall?! And unfortunately I don't know exactly how big the Priscacara hypacanthus will get. BTW: In my opinion the body shape doesn't fit either. Question 1: Which fish is this actually? Question 2: It seems to me that the beige matrix (plate) was helped with paint. Please see the photos with the arrows. In one place, paint or a piece of rock seems to have chipped off (as long as it was just beautified), that's not so tragic for me. Question 3: Is the fish a real fossil, in your opinion? So that you can get an idea, I have put up unedited photos (except for the arrows + text). I also photographed the back of the matrix (stone slab) and also the edge; also a few detailed shots. Thank you in advance. Greetings, Rod

Hi there, I have just found stored away these two fosils that I bought as a youngster many moons ago and am hoping you may be able to help me identify thier authenticity or otherwise and perhaps ID them also. I assume the fish either is or is supposed to be from the green river formation, but beyond that I am lost... Any info would be much appreciated Ta, Dave

I recently purchased a whimsical octopus chair at a friendly local gift shop, here in my home town, and while at the shop I browsed a small display of fossils, mostly from Morocco and Madagascar. Attractive gift-shop items purchased mostly at the Tucson shows. The owner asked me for my opinion of an object she purchased as a crocodile skull. I let her know I was skeptical, but she had paid quite a bit for it and I offered to consult our esteemed members for a verdict. So here I am passing the buck to you. My photos are poor, as I just took a few quick indoor snapshots, but I think they're adequate for you to make your pronouncement. I've never seen any of these items in person before and was a little surprised to see the vertebra shape at the back of the head and I am wondering if this is common. The teeth, to me, look like those of a mosasaur, is that correct? I pasted a few photos of a known fossil skull along with an extant skull and the gift-shop skull for comparison to help my local gift-shop owner see what I'm seeing. I intend to point out that the jaw and the rest of the skull appear to be one solid piece rather than an articulated jaw, and there are no sutures or anything that really resembles bone. She did ask me, when I was at the shop, if the skull could have been badly eroded or if it just isn't prepped enough. I said I didn't think so but I'd defer to you. Thank you for your comments.

Years ago I got this as a child. It came out of a basket of common fossil shells. I thought it was a Crocodile or Alligator tooth. Now, as a more informed adult, I think it's just a vaguely tooth-shaped rock. It has no enamel to speak of. Feels like limestone. Can anyone confirm? It's maybe an inch and a half long at best.
