I was recently reorganizing my fossil collection and thought I would share some pieces I collected during Paleontology field trips in undergrad at Alabama. I'm glad I took thorough notes at the time! The demopolis chalk is a popular formation for finding Exogyra/ostrea/pycnodonte shells and shark teeth. We visited a site in Tupelo, MS many times for surface collecting. Some of the cool pieces I found were many fragments of a mosasaur jaw (top pic, top 2 slots), a Squalicorax kaupi tooth, a scyliorhinus(?) tooth, bony fish vertebrae, and bony fish teeth. I was told the dark fossils

Geologist-style Legal Disclaimer for Geology Field Trip (Also open access FOP Guidebooks)
Oxytropidoceras posted a topic in Fossil News
I was looking through a Friends of the Pleistocene (FOP) fieldtrip guidebook when I came across a "legal disclaimer" as only a geologist could have written one on pp. 270-274 of Seitz (2012). The guidebook is: Seitz, Gordon, 2012, Guidebook Neotectonics of the Lake Tahoe and Carson and Sierra Valleys. Friends of the Pleistocene Pacific Cell, Sept. 13-16. It can be downloaded from: http://www.fop.cascadiageo.org/pacific_cell/2012/FOP2012-guidebook.pdf and it and other Friends of the Pleistocene Pacific Cell Field Trips gudieboo- 9 replies

Hi! Here is a trip report on visiting a locality near Carlin, Nevada (one of our early videos). I'm not sure if what we decided to call "octopus beaks" (see 1:44 and image attached) are the real thing and not just fragments of brachiopods. Perhaps, somebody more knowledgeable can weigh in with the right answer. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone! Regrettably, it has been a while since I contributed in any significant way on the forum. I’ve found myself busier than expected, and I haven’t been fossiling as much as I’d like to. Anywho, I got out on a hunt today that was special for me. I came to this forum two years ago. I had just been on a field trip with the same geology teacher who’d led my mother and my aunts and uncles on field trips. I had a blast and learned that fossil hunting could actually be done in Maryland by normal people, a fact which now seems so obvious to me. I had been hooked,

General preparations for Niobrara Fm. field trip
The Amateur Paleontologist posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hey everyone Though it'll probably take place next summer, I'm already running through some preparations for my field trip to the Niobrara Chalk Fm. of western Kansas. Based on what I've heard from other collectors (and my own experiences in other sites), I drew up a list of stages I should go through for excavating and preparing any vertebrate material (especially fish) I might encounter.. 1) Surrounding matrix/overburden is brought down to expose the bone layer 2) Shellac/Vinac/other consolidant is applied to the exposed surface 3)- 22 replies

Lake Brownwood Spillway is still closed. The dam over-topped twice in the past several years. There is now an extremely dangerous overhang. They are continuing to assess the situation. They told me they aren't planning on closing it permanently. They did say they couldn't stop folks from canoeing or kayaking up to the site. There is city park downstream where you can put in. Under normal conditions I think you should be able to get withing 0.25 miles of the site with a few short portages.

Gary and I went out to Lost Creek Dam yesterday. We paid our park fee and hiked the dam back to the pit. There were new signs on both gates that read "Danger--Authorized Personnel Only." I called the park office and they weren't aware of the change and suggested I call City Hall. I did, and after I asked about possible rule changes I was put on hold for 7 minutes. Another woman came on and had me repeat my question. She told me we could hunt, but they wanted to be notified in advance. She took my name and phone number, and a head count. I asked her if I could disseminate this info on var

Hello there, my name is Cameron and i'm starting this topic to have an open page for the flow of ideas and information about the possible formation of a Hill Country Fossil Club for San Antonio, Austin, and the surrounding areas . This idea has been proposed before on the forums, but it didn't work out, so i'm doing my best to pull everyone together to form some sort of club. It could be anything from an organized monthly meetup for group fossil hunting trips, guest speakers, etc. to a simple email list for members to invite a couple tag-alongs on their upcoming trips. However it takes shape,

Obviously, the tetrapod is from the Carboniferous Missippian...out by the old airport...does anyone know where that Casselman formation/Conemaugh Group is? Even though the Fedexia was found in 2004, it would be nice to resume some work and see what else is there...any ideas, any interest?
