    Megalicthys Scale

    From the album: Upper Devonian

Megalicthys sp. Scale (about 1/2 inch) Upper Devonian Catskill Formation Duncannon Member Red Hill Hyner, PA.
  2. From Woodbine formation, picked it because it looked like maybe something other than typical weird concretion, still does, but when I looked at little protrusion I saw what looks like part of jaw and something else. Had a heck of time trying to clear pictures, two teeth are visible and looks like rest broke off maybe. I'm guessing Enchodus?

    Ray tooth?

Hello! Help please with identification. Height ~ 1 mm. Age - Middle Miocene. But there is a possibility that this tooth could be from Middle Eocene redeposits. I didnt fond such teeth before, but it resemble me some Rays tooth, but I can be wrong. Maybe someone found something similar... Location - Western Ukraine. Thanks in advance!

    Help with fossil Fish ID

Is this a Knightia? If so, why does it look like squidward? Im only assuming it's from the Green River because I found it in a box with stuff that is definitely from the Green River.

    Bone material from Seven Stars?

I have a fossil from Seven Stars (Mahantango Formation, Givetian of the Devonian) that is shiny and looks like some fish material I have. However, I am not an expert on bones and could use some help. Is this bone, and if not, what is it?

    Platysomus sp. ?

Hello! A fossil of what I believe to be Platysomus has come into my possession and I was wondering if any others here have the necessary knowledge to identify the exact species (or if it's even identifiable at all)! If my photos aren't sharp enough, I can take more and hopefully I'll be allowed to edit my post.... post-posting! I've attached images of both halves and shots of the head- If I remember correctly, those are important for ID! ...Unfortunately, location and age are unknown. If I find out where this one's from I'll leave a comment or update my post- whichever one's more possible than the other. The fish itself is exactly 7cm long- body depth is 5.2cm. Thank you in advance! I appreciate all the help that I recieve here. (.....Especially that "egg" that I posted before- turned out be very un-egglike in hindsight! Thank you again!)

A Triassic fish from Madagascar ID?

Sorry for the necro bump but I saw this online, a large palaeoniscid from Madagascar? Any idea on genus or species or is it something new? EDIT: sorry about the link
  9. I already did some research (well, I looked through the Wikipedia list of fossil fish found in Solnhofen), but the closest thing I could find was Leptolepides, however they dont really look alike... Can anyone tell me, what I have got here? Thank you! Since all of you have been asking about the size, I took a picture with a ruler (alright, I took two)

    Moroccan Mystery Vertebrae

I was looking through the auction site for the 100th time this week, and saw what are supposed to be Mosasaur vertebrae. Apart from size, they don't look like any Mosasaur verts I've seen. These look more like very large Enchodus verts to me. The slab is 19"x7". I'm not buying them at the moment. I'm just curious as to how correct I am.

X Fish tooth? Pierre shale sd

Found this near the articulated mosasaur tail but in mud silt. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/124993-mosasaur-articulated-spine-pierre-shale-sd-quarry/ Any way to id these teeth? Also random fish vertebrae in it. One strange looking one with like a core in it. Looks like a wash together collection. Photo order got scrambled when uploaded.

    Gar teeth?

I was out of town for about 2 weeks and I had a chance to go fossil hunting at a pretty good spot (that post should come out soon). This is a piece of jaw one of my friends found with two teeth in it. Based off of the amount of gar scales found there my closest guess would be gar jaw, could anyone correct me on that? (Entering the pictures I notice that measurements are missing, it's about one cm.) Thank you!
  13. I collected this piece of placoderm bone a while ago from the Cedar Valley Formation (Middle Devonian) in Iowa. Most bits I've found are just "indeterminate bone bits", but this piece has enough structure that I am hopeful it can be identified to a specific part of the anatomy. It superficially reminds me of a cranial element posted by @Peat Burns a while ago from the Silica Shale in Ohio. However I am too unfamiliar with placoderms to say exactly where this piece of bone might have come from, and I was hoping a forum member might have some input. Thanks for any thoughts. @jdp

    Fish?

Pretty sure it’s a fish- I’m 100 new at this, have no clue about anything…. Besides rocks were boring… well not even boring I just never gave them a thought until about 2 months ago… It’s literally like I woke up one day and I am obsessed, it’s a literally all I can do not to constantly be staring at the ground and looking at rocks. So that’s a problem within and of itself but does anyone have any idea 67909609907__70F35EF2-A9DA-4DE3-8FEA-C0A9E87AB81B.MOV about this cool fish fossil?
  16. Take a look at this Asialepidotes shingyiensis from Yunnan, China. It is a very nice fish. But do you see what's the problem?
  17. I made a trip to a different spot on the North Sulfur River this morning. I had been to this spot one time last year, but an unforecast rain shower showed up and turned the river into such a muddy mess that I turned around and left without finding anything. With a 100 degree high forecast for today, I didn't figure rain would be a problem. I found some of the usual things you expect to find at NSR, Hamulus worm tubes, a gastropod, a perfectly preserved complete bivalve, some interesting bones, and lots of bacculites. The only bacculite I brought home was the one in this photo, with the great suture lines.

    Fish species ID

Hello! Can anyone help me identify what fish species these three specimens are? Location is unknown. The first two smaller ones are about 5-7 cm. The larger one is 27 cm. Thank you! Let me know if you need any more additional info.

    IS it even a fish?

After countless hours looking at fish fossil images, I am wondering if I should be looking at a different species. This was included with a few in another post but I have re-imaged it. It was a gift from a clients Father who regularly travelled between the Mid-Far East. Unfortunately our client does not know from where he acquired it.

    Knightia Alta ....?

I'm fairly sure this a Knighia alta but as always, it's best to run it past the experts I don't have a find location - some places I buy fossils from are terrible at provenance, it's just stock to sell to them. Looking at the side of the slab, there are many other fossils within too - I don't want to destroy to fish to find out what they are

    Flea Market Fish

Hi gang - My fiancé’s mom came across a fossil fish at a flea market and she ended up getting it. She sent me a picture asking about its species and where it’s from, but I haven’t a clue. Any ideas? Thanks!

    Two unknown subjects

I will start with an apology. I have no info on these. They were given to me by a client of ours, the only info he could pass on was that his father had them when he returned from the far east, and even that is sketchy as he didn't know when that was. I will post them separately so as not to confuse. This first looks to me shrimplike, but I don't even know the correct orientation
