There's a local park that has a shallow pond with fountain that sits on the edge of downhill slope and when we have a heavy rain it overflows, there is even a little spillway. The run off goes downhill where it pools and makes a temporary pond until it drains. Sometimes the water flow carries plants and baby fish with it and I can usually find a dozen or so fish stranded in puddles. The week before last we had record setting rain receiving 10" in 24 hours and I went to check things out and wasn't prepared for what I found. There were dead fish everywhere, juvenile large mouth bass that were getting picked off by crows, but I still found a few dozen alive in puddles. What I couldn't see was all the baby catfish under the laid over grass, when I discovered them I got on my knees and started parting the grass and plucking them out for two hours. I picked out over 100 baby brown bullhead catfish and of course didn't have my gloves so got just as many stings as you can see in picture of my hand holding a bullfrog tadpole, rescued 9 of those. Released them all back in pond except a few I brought home to raise. The reason there were so many catfish is that they were in a ' ball' and all washed out together, the parents teach them to ball by herding them together from day one as a defense. They remain in a ball even as juveniles, sometimes you can see them in shallow water as a big black mass moving in unison. Pictures show the downhill trickle and area I searched, a holding basket with tadpoles, bass (they're alive), and about 20 catfish, a yellow crested night heron having easy meal in temporary pond including crawdads which I show the leftovers, my favorite butterfly a Pipevine Swallowtail, and close up of baby catfish.

Found this in the creek behind my house in Eastern Kentucky. It's been raining (and flooding) a lot so tons of rocks are being washed out of the hills. I'm uncertain what era this could be from since I'm not exactly sure where it washed out from. The pictures I'm including show it while it was still in the rock and after I removed it. I thought it was made of metal at first, but it isn't magnetic at all, nor is it soft like lead or aluminum. After looking around online the closest thing I could find to it's shape is fish coprolite. Is this coprolite or just some strange thing in a rock?

Hey, I’m wanting to go to GMR tomorrow because it’s the first day that lines up with me and my boyfriends schedule, but I am wondering if anyone is in that area that can tell me if it’s too flooded to go? I know it’s been raining a bit but it hasn’t rained for a few days so I’m just wondering if it’s clear to go fossil hunting. We live about 3 hours away so it’s a bit far to just hope for the best haha. Thank you!

Hello dear specialist. I am biologist by my degree is in biotechnology. My husband is Iranian and we have a lot of friends there.
