Hi all! This was given to me by my father in law and he found it over 30 years ago when digging to lay down cables. He believes it was either found in North Key Largo or Upper Matecumbe area. It feels pretty heavy. Leading me to think it’s fossilized and not modern. What do you guys think? IMG_1445.mov

Hello, My name is Kris. I haves been collecting shells since I was a child now and I started collecting minerals and fossils in adulthood. I often visit the Florida Keys so a lot of what I collect comes from there. I mostly find coral and clams, but recently I noticed I had collected a fossil crab claw years ago thinking it was a piece of coral. I thought it would be a good idea to start getting a second opinion on what I find, so here I am. I also sometimes buy something and forget to label it (😅), so I may also post to try to identify things I forgot.

Hello, I found this interesting rock when going through my old things and wanted to see what it might be. It has been years, but I am pretty sure I collected it from the ocean in the Florida keys. I am leaning towards turlt shell, but I can’t see any obvious textures that would indicate that. The piece is about 1.5 in or 4 cm big. Here is the top side. When viewed from the side, you can tell it is a thin dark layer. Side View This is the bottom. It is much paler. I was also able to get some micro photos using a jewelry lens. They are not great, but you can see the texture better. Top layer micros bottom layer micros Lastly I got a micro shot of one of the sides

From the album: Florida Fossils From Keys
When I was down in the keys staying at the hotel I decided to collect some rocks for outside landscape. After putting it in one corner on porch - after a few days I started to see a pattern. Turn out this is a fossil Queen Conch encrusted in corals - wow.-

I went to Key West and throughout Florida Keys, almost every shoreline, I saw coral and shells in matrix. Are they fossil coral and shells or are they modern? Here are some pictures.

I could use some help on the following identifications for these coral skeletons. All were found in the Islamorada, Fl. The first 3 washed ashore after Hurricane Irma. 1. FFRA, Favia fragum 2. Not sure, Maybe CNAT? Colpophyllia natans or small DLAB? Diploria labyrinthiformes 3. EFAS, Eusmilia fastigiata 4. PSTR, Pseudodiploria strigosa fossilized. 5. Not sure CNAT? fossilized. 1.
