I just wanted to say howdy. Been lurking for a while and thanks for lots of good information. I'm a green rookie. Me and an old (he's older than dirt, really!!) friend went shark teeth hunting a couple of times and we're hooked. We're old salamander-catching, skinny-dipping, bicycle-riding, sneak-smoking friends that grew up together and who have started back riding around and hunting rocks. Being down here in south Alabama I call it the land of muck and mud...not many rocks.<duh> Then a few weeks back we stopped by a creek and decided to hunt some shark teeth. And by George, we found a few!! We got a couple of little screens from Wallyworld and went back and found a few more. We're hooked.<grin> Only been hunting twice so far, but found a few teeth, some ray plates, a few tiny vertebra, and some coprolite. Pretty much Eocene stuff I think. Anyhow, I'll still be lurking mostly 'cause I really don't know what we're doing or the terminology involved. But, just a couple of trips under our belts and we're having fun...just a couple of old....friends. Anyhow...howdy! Ed

All, Bottom Line: After driving all the way down from Nashville for an extended weekend of “Shauna Time”, I am sitting in a hotel room in Andalusia, AL and need to develop a Plan B for fossil hunting due to weather conditions. I am afraid river hunting will be a “no go” due to the all the rain and potentially dangerous swift water type river conditions. I had planned on starting my adventure at Point-A dam. When I decided to come down, I knew bad weather may be an issue, but I had to roll the dice due to work obligations - my boss told us not to expect to take any time off for the next 60 + days. This trip is “now or never”. I have completely packed out my SUV with a kayak, chest height waders, rain gear and tools and, with exception to dangerous river conditions, I am ready for any type of fossil hunting. I’m not afraid of getting wet and muddy (I am former military) but I am fairly confident that being swept away in the current would probably ruin my weekend I would GREATLY appreciate any suggestions! Thank you!

I will give you a little back ground on where I found this fossil. There is a creek that runs through some of my families land in the middle of Walton County Florida. It is not located in a place that most people look for fossils. There are only about three locations on the creek that the beds are visible and most of them are at least five feet underwater and not easily accessible. I found this on the bottom of the creek at one of these locations when I was a kid. For the longest time I thought it was some old native American artifact. I recently found out it is some type of marine jaw bone. I looked up some of the geological formations where I live, and from what I can tell the beds are part of the Alum Bluff Group which is from the Miocene period.

Please help identify this tooth found week before last at Seagrove Beach, FL in the Florida Panhandle. This little gem was the only tooth I found all week there. The tooth is smaller than the size of an M&M and has a notch in the middle at the top of the root. There appear to be serrations all along the tooth and in the area just below the root. Thanks

I was wondering if it would be possible and what the benefits might be to form a fossil hunting group here in the panhandle? It might help us to get a better idea of what was actually here. I only know of a few papers and some book mentions that include the panhandle and most are from the 30's t0 50's and are mostly shells. We'd need a real paleontologist also.
