  1. Good afternoon, I’m looking to get help identify a faced mineral specimen, I have no location information. I thought it looked like a combination, possibly variscite or serpentine, I’m unsure. It is both fluorescent and phosphorescent. It has a few shades of green, black and white. It has a low level of hardness and the light neon green coloration is waxy in appearance. It’s a really neat specimen and I was thinking of polishing it for display but I’m unsure what I’m dealing with.   2. Hello I have recently purchased an UV flashlight. Under the UV light, I noticed that a couple of shark teeth are glowing fluorescent. I have two megalodon tooth and both are from Carolina; strangely only one tooth glows and the other does not. The otodus tooth fluoresce as well. Is to be noted that all three tooth are from different sellers, but have been reputable for selling genuine fossils. (However, I could very well be mistaken on the genuineness of the teeth) Suspecting a clear coat or vanish has been applied, I have proceeded to use a cotton swab soaked with acetone on both glowing tooth. But the teeth remains unchanged. Is there a reason for the fluoresence (especially on the Meg tooth - where it glows for one and not the other)? Is fluoresence on fossilized shark teeth a normal/common occurence? Is fluoresence on such a large proportion of a fossil an indication of fakery? Apologies for the many questions and, thank you and appreciate any help and advice on the matter.

    Ethiopian Amber (Debre Libanos Sandstone; 23-16 Ma)

    4.7g polished specimen of amber from one of several deposits near Alem Ketema, Amhara Region, Ethiopia; piece measures 35x24x17mm. There is a thin vein of transparent material, while the rest is heavily included with organic detritus; some small fragments of plant material are seen in the transparent portions (see associated photo). The green coloration is partly due to the amber's autofluorescence initiated by the LED light (transmitted) during photography; the clear portions of this specimen present a yellow-green base color in incandescent light, and emit a greenish fluorescence in sunlight or LED light. Ethiopian amber deposits have been described relatively recently (2010), and the amber occurring in the siltstone layer of the Debre Libanos Sandstone was initially believed to be Cretaceous in age; later studies have proven the initial determination to be false, and further study of palynomorph and insect inclusions have provided a new estimated age of Early Miocene. The amber-bearing layer is over- and underlain by basaltic layers, some of which display columnar jointing; volcanic-derived pressure and heat has naturally changed the base color of some of this amber to varying shades of green. This amber is also believed to possibly have been produced by a member of the Hymenaea genus.

    Palm-sized piece roughly 80g in weight. There is a very thin layer of coal on the top and bottom of the piece, making it a good example of a seam-type formation. It's blue coloration is purely surface fluorescence, initiated in this case by a 140 lumen LED light; this fluorescence (especially under a non-LW UV light) is caused by the presence of an exceptionally high concentration of various hydrocarbons contained within the amber.

    4.3g dark, transparent blue amber from West Sumatra. After grinding and polishing, I was surprised to discover that it contains 2 ants and 2 winged ants (possibly wasps); these were a little tricky to photograph, due to the amber's strong fluorescence under 140 lumen LED light, so these inclusions had to be backlit. I used a Canon EOS 500D, Canon 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens, and combined 2x and 4x Hoya circular magnifier lenses (8x).

The antennae appear to have clubbed tips, but each is actually coated/overlain by a congealed drop of resin within the amber itself (this type of suspended resin formation is characteristic of and common in Indonesian amber).

    4.3g dark, transparent blue amber from West Sumatra. The inclusion is that of a well-preserved Pseudomyrmex sp. of ant. There is very little documentation, written or photographic, of the flora and fauna inclusions in Indonesian amber, unfortunately.

    Small (5-8g) partial nodules of raw blue amber from the east flank of the Bukit Barisan range of West Sumatra. These pieces are clear as glass, and fluoresce very nicely under a 140 lm LED light. *This Sumatra material (and Indonesian amber in general) is believed to have been produced by a parent tree belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family; it's spectroscopic signature is also incredibly similar to Bitterfeld amber (also produced by a dipterocarp source tree). **This blue amber's particular locality is part of the Sinamar Fm., and the layers containing the resin are dated to be approximately 30 Ma (Oligocene, mid-Rupelian); the amber-bearing strata of this formation is located at a depth of approximately 32-39 m, and is composed of hard, banded coal (sub-divided into two layers of slightly different grades, 2.5m and 4.5m thick). I have 15 pieces, and these are the ones I haven't yet pre-formed. The piece in the upper-right corner is pre-formed (diamond needle files), and it is ready for increasing grades of sandpaper (240-3000 grit), and a final polish with a denim cloth and polishing compound (ZAM).

    Gastropod Identification 1

    Hello all, I need some help identifying this gastropod. It is from the Babcock Ranch northeast of Cape Coral and Ft. Myers. We collected these fine specimens from some of the "spoils" near the golf course. It appears to be a gastropod, but that is as far as I can go with the identification. Does anyone have any idea what the age and formation would be at this former quarry site? Most of my references would say "undifferentiated Pilo-Pleistocene deposits.   15. I just got a new short-wave UV rig to replace my cheap and now defunct lamp. Besides wishing to check out fossils, I acquired some inexpensive mineral specimens to explore. Here they are alit. Pretty cool, but the iPad camera failed to capture the striking depth of the red-orange color. Red is Calcite and the green, Willemite.

    Freaky Flourescent Fossil Shell

    In the daylight, this is an articulated Exogyra shell from the Cretaceous New Egypt Formation as it runs through Mullica Hill, New Jersey. I brought it home because it had an interesting bit of vivianite replacement covering half the surface of one valve. When I brought it home, I noticed some white material inside the shell cavity. I figured it might be calcite, which sometimes fluoresces. So, I pulled out my UV lamp. To my shock, not only did the white material glow an interesting powder blue color, but the majority of the one valve glows an intense, bright red! Meanwhile, the other valve doesn't glow at all.

    In the daylight, this is an articulated Exogyra shell from the Cretaceous New Egypt Formation as it runs through Mullica Hill, New Jersey. I brought it home because it had an interesting bit of vivianite replacement covering half the surface of one valve.     I was playing around with the UV lamp in my lab, seeing what might unexpectedly glow this afternoon. This was a nice surprise. It's an internal mold of Bacculites sp. with sutures that fluoresce orange under 345nm UV light. Bright orange like this usually indicates calcite, a mineral that makes up fossil shells and some modern ones, too. Between the mud-filled chambers, the shell was preserved while the exterior of the cone wore away. The shell material was either calcite to begin with or, more likely, began as aragonite (same chemical compound as calcite, but different crystal structure and glows yellow instead of orange) and changed over millions of years to the more stable configuration of calcite. Meanwhile, the mud looks like it may have a little bit of some fluorescent minerals in the mix, but it's mostly a daylight-only affair. The blue may be some residual glue from a label. This specimen is from the late Cretceaous Pierre Shale Formation in South Dakota.

  19. a freind went for a fossil hunting in China's Beipiao, a well know lagerstatte of jehol biota ( early cretacous/late jurasic) . By chance he used a home UV light to check his pieces, just to find that one of them become fluorescent and revealing much more details. this should be a tyipcal Lycoptera davidi or sinensis

    Fluorescent Silicified Cypress Wood

    One of Delaware's many mysteries is the petrified wood found near Odessa and Smyrna. The general consensus is that is cypress wood of some kind and it was buried under Pleistocene sediments. However, the origin of the wood and the age have yet to be figured out. Some say Miocene. Others say as old as Cretaceous. There are no other co-occurring fossils in the deposit to give any clues. The photo on the right was taken using a 395 nm UV lamp.
