Hi, I just got back from a family trip to folly Beach and found my first sharks teeth. I looked for hours, finding nothing and then found 6 in 5 minutes, followed by hours of nothing. I am very excited and thankful for the ones I found, but is this common? I also need help with ID from the experts. Thank you so much.

Well, folly Beach worked out much better than Edisto Beach for fossils. Almost no one was hunting fossils...almost. One lady had 48 very small teeth. Spent several hours pacing the Surfline watching for them to be uncovered. Fossil bone fragments were very common and not hard to find at all. The south side of the island was the best for bones frags, but teeth seemed to be anywhere in the surf according to the tooth lady. She had a running bet as to who had to buy dinner with two other people hunting teeth closer to the pier. There was a fair abundance of nice specimen modern shells to be had as well. Most are smaller but very good in quality. Totals: 7 pcs turtle shell fragments. 14 whale bone 1 broken Meg tooth 1 unknown nasal bridge 4 pcs terrestrial bone fragments. 1 Ray crusher plate 20+ copralites and phosphate nodules.

Today I went for my first "serious" (ahum) shark teeth hunt. Over the last few weeks I was keeping my eyes open while walking the beaches of Sullivans Island and Isle of Palms with my wife, but today it was "game on". Left the house at 8:00AM and drove to Folly Beach as I had been reading that of the beaches closes to me that was the best to look for teeth. Weather was nasty, cold and windy. Tide was still high but outgoing. Hardly anybody on the beach. Spent approximately 3 hours without finding anything. I was mainly looking in the accumulations of shells, seaweed, rocks, pottery higher up the beach. Saw one person picking up things at the waterline and decided to ask her what/how she was doing. We had a friendly conversation. I explained that it was my first time. She showed me a handful of small teeth that she found by looking for them as the shallow waves are rolling ashore. I decided that, as I had nothing to lose, to follow her method/advice and started to look close to the waterline as well. I do not think that more than 5 minutes passed before I found MY FIRST TOOTH EVER !! I know that compared with what others here report it is not much, but for me it meant that I had succeeded in my quest. Shortly after, I found a second one, but at that point the nasty conditions were taking their toll and I decided to call it a day. I will be back.

Hey guys! Just a few things I found on Folly, i’m not too knowledgeable. Think I got a puffer fish & stingray mouth/dental plate. If anyone can ID and give an approximate age of what’s in the pic, that’d be cool. Pic attached.

Traveling to Summerville to hunt for Shark Teeth and other Fossils
Kroy posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hello. My son and I are heading to South Carolina to Summerville area and Folly Beach area to search for Shark Teeth. This is a big trip from California for 4 full days and we hope to find some great fossils. This is August 4th-7th. We are doing an excursion on the 4th. But for the next day or two it is quite hard to figure which creeks/rivers are OK to go to which will give us some luck. Any insights? Checked the forums but it has been hard to find exactly where to go. On the last day we head to Folly beach to see what is there. Any insight on what section to start with? I have been following the tide charts. Thank you!- 6 replies

Hello everyone! Yesterday I went hunting at Folly in South Carolina, and as per expected I found several bull shark and sand tiger shark teeth, as well as pieces of bone. However, I found something I wasn't sure of as far as identification, kind of resembling a small fish skull that I have. But I'm not sure. Thanks to all who are helping identify this fossil. I will also be commenting with additional photos.

Hey all, yesterday my wife (CCNHM collections manager Sarah Boessenecker) and I wrote about some of our recent finds from Folly Beach, SC. Collecting fossils there is quite easy, and if you're there for non-shark teeth, there's essentially no competition since that's all anyone ever looks for there. The fossils of Folly Beach have never been written up, and I'm getting more and more curious about them - particularly fossil marine mammals. If anyone finds marine mammal earbones out there, I'm dying to take a look! We've already gotten a nice donation from Ashby Gale, Edisto SP ranger, of a pygmy sperm whale periotic. Here's the blog post with some images of our recent finds - including my first giant armadillo scute (Holmesina), an Alligator osteoderm, various shark and mammal teeth, and a snake vertebra. I've made a plan to go out to Folly once a week this entire semester, since it's only a 15-20 minute drive from College of Charleston (a very nice escape from campus and teaching) http://blogs.cofc.edu/macebrownmuseum/2017/02/03/friday-fossil-feature-it-would-be-folly-to-pass-this-site-up/

I'm new to this forum and am hooked! Spent hours reading through threads and have such horrible shark tooth fever now . Would love to go on a creek hunt, but don't know where to go... I live in Wisconsin and am planning a road trip over an extended weekend (Memorial Day) to SC, just to hunt for shark teeth. (I'm THAT dedicated, where I'll make a 15 hour drive to get there!!!) I've hunted in Florida (shore line and also panned out in the water with my home made floating shark tooth sifters. Have hunted in FL for years...however it seems that SC might offer more "big guys" (Meg's, etc). The biggest I've found in FL is about 1-1.5 inch. Lots of broken ones, but quite a few intact. Any tips (areas that might pan out and are open to public), recommendations (besides bringing lots of drinking water, wear sun and bug protection, any other things to watch out for?)...and any groups that wouldn't mind more company? Would love to go with local shark tooth enthusiasts, as I'm not familiar with the area or this type of hunting. I'm not even sure what area of SC to stay during my visit to be closest to shark tooth action (Mrytle Beach area? Folly Beach? Edisto?) so recommendations on general location would also be appreciated. Will need to book a hotel room soon... Thanks all!!

Two Of My Finds On Folly Beach, Sc - Maybe Coral? No Idea...
reddesilets posted a topic in Fossil ID
I have no idea what these are. I've been searching images on the internet for days now. I assume, if anything, maybe they are coral but I'm not even close to being sure. I don't see any patterns of like growth rings or anything like that but I'm no expert on corals so IDK. Maybe if they are there they are microscopic. Maybe there are none just as it seems to be. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Close up view of the gray specimen Gray on the left and tan on the right Side angle view with gray on the left and tan on the right- 11 replies
