In Line At Franklin BBQ, Anyone in Austin Hungry?
Scylla posted a topic in Members' News & Diversions
Visiting Austin,TX and I'm waiting in line for Franklin. This is my second time getting in line for the family; the line is its own experience. The brisket is as good as it gets. We have our favorite BBQ spots in a bunch of cities and my oldest loves to smoke meats at home. What is your favorite BBQ place? -
Aging Foods: The evolutionary history of what's on your dinnerplate
MeargleSchmeargl posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I was just randomly browsing the ID forums recently and I saw this thread: I initially thought "Of course it's not a potato", when a different thought hit me: "Is there such thing as a fossilized potato?" Now too intrigued not to investigate, I quickly input my query into the Google search bar and delved into this strange curiosity. To my surprise, this article from almost exactly 2 years ago appeared: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/52millionyearold-fossil-relative-to-the-potato-discovered-in-patagonia/ Along with an image: With this, scientists learned that an ancient relative to tomatillos and potatoes existed 52 million years ago back in the Eocene. And this got me thinking: "What about Garlic? Cilantro? Cayenne???" That is where you all come in. Can you find the most ancient fossil ancestors of common foods found on people's dinner plates? This includes ingredients in dishes involving multiple species and foods from different cultures (like Sushi rolls from Japan). I wonder who can find the most interesting culinary lineage.- 2 replies
