So I am in the process of building a raft in order to reach those backwoods fossil hunting spots. I really don’t want to spend the money on a canoe/kayak that I will only use a few times. Is this a waste of my time and effort?

Today I was able to get out to the outcrop along Rickard Hill in Schoharie, New York. I didn’t find a ton of interesting things because I was looking in a more crystalline layer of the Kalkberg formation that had less abundant fossils. I found a handful of nice orthid, spiriferid, and atrypid brachiopods and one fenestellid bryozoan. Next time I go I’m going to try and get into a different, more fossiliferous layer because the crystalline rock is hard to break and when it does it breaks randomly, often damaging the fossils.

Last weekend I got a chance to do some fossil hunting in a creek in Greene, New York. I am a unsure if the exact formation I was in but I know it was upper Devonian. Brachiopods were quite abundant, especially spiriferid ones. I also found a couple nice bivalves and some bryozoans/corals.

A month or so ago I found these while trout fishing in a creek in the lower Champlain valley. I have no idea what they are, so any info would be very helpful. They were from Ordovician rock that was pretty barren except for a few brachiopods.

I'm looking for some places to look for Triassic fossils in west texas. I've heard that there is some exposed along US-84 but I'm looking for a little more around there.

Hello to everyone! With this post I would like to invite anyone who would like a group travel to Morocco exclusively for fossil hunting in the southern part of the country after the town of Zagora. My ideal period would be between October and November and then again middle December to Christmas. I am thinking for about 7 days. Two days would be wasted going back and forth to the locations. If there is a lot of interest for this, it would be better to create group of 4 so as to be more comfortable in the car. Important things to be taken into account : 1) The law for fossil export of Morocco is vague. Although it prohibits the export, specifically for scientifically important spiecements, it is not enforced. There are two threads in the forum that discuss this matter. 2) Chisels hammers etc must be bought locally and probably abandoned in the country. I would never carry such stuff in a flight. 3) Book flight with one hand luggage and return flight with more luggage. I guess this is apparent. 4) Passport is mandatory but no visa needed at least for EU citizens. 5) Two airports are major: Marakesh Menara and Rabat. I consider them meeting point. The optimal would be to get another flight from those airports to Zagora, but sometimes the later doesn't have flights. The road to Sahara is tiring so any group must have at least two people with driving licence. 6) Renting a car usually costs 50 bucks a day. We may also consider renting atv for small distance. 7) Thorough organisation of this endeavour. People will come from far away and we should prepare everything to guarantee everything is perfect and everyone's needs will be fulfilled. I hope I will find here people with such interest. Can anyone confirm if it is fine to use the hammer end of my Estwing Geological pick for striking a small cold chisel when fossil hunting - or is it just for striking rocks/ It actually stipulates that the pick end is for prying only (which is fine) but the that hammer end is only for wooden stakes! Is this an overkill by Estwing to manage their H&S liability or is it common knowledge that you canuse the hammer on cold chisels? Any advice gratefully appreciated! Cheers - Rick

Over April break I will be traveling to Horseshoe Bend in northern Arkansas for a week. I am hoping to get the opportunity to do some fossil hunting while I’m there and I’m wondering if anybody knows of any fossil hunting localities in northern Arkansas that they would be kind enough to share with me.

Hi all! I am planning on taking my 3rd fossil collecting trip to Florida next week. I had an amazing time in previous trips and am planning one that will be a bit longer! I plan on collecting in Gainesville at Hogtown Creek (my first time) and the Peace River, where I will be kayaking and camping a good stretch of it over the course of 2 or 3 days. I have my own gear and kayak, but will reach out to canoe outpost for their services in the drop off up river. It is 5 degrees in Chicago today and i am excitedly spending my week over-planning the trip. I have a few questions I’d love some feedback on from this who are more familiar with the area. For 2-3 days where would you recommend to launch the kayak at on the Peace River? And are camp spots easy to find along the way? I’ve floated between the Gardner and Brownsville boat ramps before, but looking to extend that type of trip, i really enjoyed it. What other areas should I look to collect around Gainesville? Are there any other rivers I should look into? My timeline is flexible I’ve read a bit into the Suwannee River, is that worth a stop? And any advice on prospecting or collecting there? Also, where is your top-secret spot where I can find the mammoth teeth and 5’’+ megs? (Feel free to pm this info ) If anyone is interested in joining me (tentatively Jan 25-29), I would love to connect and collect together! Hello I live in Orlando, Florida and have been trying to find good spots for a while. Just a problem is I would prefer a thin creek or river and I haven’t been able to find one yet. Any tips or locations? Sorry if I chose the wrong place to submit this I just recently found this website.

In a week or so I am going to drive the 5 hours from Tacoma WA to Beverly beach Oregon. I know I will find some fossils there but I also know there are many good spots around this area or maybe on the way that many Oregonians or other fossil hunters may know. My main trip goes like this. 1. Leave Tacoma WA 2. Drive to Gleneden beach 3. Drive to Beverley beach 4. Drive to seal rock beach. 5. Drive home. I am hoping for a little guidance for this because I am driving so far, I want to be sure I'll find something. My goal is to find some clams and maybe some turritellas from the Miocene. Let me know any suggestions that would be on the way / are near the Oregon coast. if anyone could tell me about their experience near Beverley beach I'd love to hear what you found and how to best find fossils there. I am open to Private messages about specific sites as well

My husband and I are driving from Texas to Canada. We are both Science teachers and avid fossil hunters in TX. Could someone advise us on where we could collect fossils. I just want a few to bring back for my classroom and to my students. I educate about 350 students in the 6th grade each year with rocks and fossils found all over the US. Would love to find a few to show them. I would even be willing to bring some with me to exchange with you.

Hello everyone! Its winter now and I am in Bulgaria, therefore I do not have many options for fossil hunting so I invest in research! What else to do with lots of cold... I visited the Natural History museum of Sofia, saw some localities but did not manage to pinpoint them on map. Searching the whole area around 100km diameter I found this publication https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233502325_Late_Valanginian-Hauterivian_cephalopod_fauna_from_the_Stara_Planina_Mountain_eastern_Serbia It is ideal for me, weather permitting of course. The locality is called Vladikina Ploča, 43.191028, 22.742052 , 3KM NW of Rsovci and 20km East driving from Pirot. I read the whole publication and the ammonites found there date 139.8-129.4MY. On Rockd however, south of Rsovci states that the formations are Early Cretaceous 145-100. North from Rsovci (where the publication states) the formations are Early/Middle Jurasic 201-163.5, thing that would not match with the research. According to @Darko and other pictures found on Google, the location must be where exactly I placed the pin point. The color of the mountain looks the same at least(light dark grey). Any ideas where I could find a more accurate map? PS> @Darko If you want we can arrange a trip there, when the weather is good!

Hello, I am in Maryland (near Annapolis) and hope to take my 9-year-old son fossil hunting. He really enjoyed our hunt in Pennsylvania (Beltzville) last week. I have heard of Calvert Cliffs (any advice?) but would also be interested in other sites. We could drive to sites in southern PA, northern VA or DC. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hey, so I’m pretty new to fossil collecting, i plan to go to Green Mills Run in a few weeks after doing some reading on it. Anyways, I was wondering if it was possible to find any fossils in creeks pretty inland, or if it’s only possible close to the coast? I’m in North Carolina, near the Charlotte area, and was thinking about searching in some creeks around the area. Thanks for your help!

Hey TFF Members! It's been a while since I posted, and I see I have messages I need to reply to as well. I will get back to them ASAP. I have just been ridiculously busy and it's hard to keep up with everything. I just went up to Georgia to hunt for Agatized Coral Geodes! Cris got a saw and we were able to cut what we found in the video as well. I had a great time and we found some really great specimens that looked amazing cut up. Check it out when you get a chance!

I was asked to present on fossil hunting at the 2019 Minnesota Mineral Club Show in Cottage Grove, MN on Oct. 19th after one of their Board Members saw me on the TV show Minnesota Bound episode #903. I thought you all might like some pics of the show! Overflow of vendors in the outside parking lot. As you come into the building... Displays... Some educational... One whole room was for educational displays and interactive stuff. GeschWhat is up front and doing shark tooth necklaces for kids! Very cool Florescent rock display! Some of the outside vendors...

I recently went on a vacation to Lake Texoma, Oklahoma and rented a fishing kayak there. It proved to be indispensable for collecting. It had a decent amount of storage for my specimens and gear and it only took me about 4 hour to collect my specimens and return to the dock. I ended up spending about enough money to buy a cheap kayak. Lesson learned I guess.

I am new to the site and fossils. My son (7) is very interested in fossils. We are planning to go to Glen Rose, Texas this spring. However, He is really wanting to search and find petrified wood in the near future. I do not know where to begin. We live in Tyler, TX and want to go somewhere, we will be able to easily see and find petrified wood and fossils. I am a bad amateur and could really use some help in where to take my son. If anyone knows please help me out

So I went to this river thinking i was going to have a blast cannon balling into the deepest areas except I found an excellent specimen and spent the rest of my day collecting amazing fossils.
