Hello! I just moved to San Antonio, TX. I brought my giant clam collection with me. Please me out please before saying this post doesn't belong here. So, my biggest giant clam shell broke in half during the move, and I want to repair it. I'd assume its a lot like restoring fossils, which is why I'm in need of your help. Here are my questions: #1: Can I restore a modern giant clam shell with fossil restoration products? #2: If #1 is yes, then what would be the best adhesive/restoration product for restoring tiny and big, light and VERY heavy pieces of seashell? #3: Does anyone live near San Antonio TX that I could pay to have them help me fix it? (If so, I have further requests on how to do it and make it more like a piece of art than a shell. Until someone can help me, I'm trying to learn as much as I can in case I have to do it myself.) #4: Any other information that would be useful for my pursuit? Thank you so much everyone! I’m currently in search of a fossil preparator who can repair/restore a broken pterosaur tooth. The other day I accidentally knocked a box of small fossils off of a shelf and several items broke. I’ve been able to glue most of the stuff back together with PaleoBond, with the exception of a ~2.5 cm pterosaur tooth (Kem Kem Beds, Morocco) that broke into two pieces, and the two piece don’t fit back together perfectly, Repair of the tooth would require filling relatively substantial cracks as well as painting. This is beyond my skill level, especially with such a small fossil, so I’m willing to pay someone with experience to restore to tooth, ideally so that the fact it was broken is barely noticeable. I’ve seen pretty convincing tooth composites from the Kem Kem Beds before, so I’m hopefully these results are attainable if done by a preparator with experience. Does anybody have any recommendations to who I could approach to perform such a repair? Or, better yet, does anyone reading this have any experience with this type of fossil repair/restoration? I apologize greatly if this type of post is not usual for this category, I know that it’s essentially an ISO ad. But I’ve tried Google looking for people who offer fossil repair services and had very little luck, and I know The Fossil Forum is full of experienced and knowledgeable people and thought this was my best bet for locating help.

Recently, I have been out fossil hunting more often than usual, and many of them have since been damaged. Some were broken during transportation, and others were broken as I excavated them. The fossils are all from the black Billings Shale, which fractures easily. Is there any way that I can repair them without leaving any obvious markings?

Hi all, These two have been sitting on my desk for some time, as I kept on forgetting to ask this. Now I finally remembered. I once made a trade with a fossil-lover in Singapore, but unfortunately the fossils arrived broken, having not survived the trip. The two broken fossils I got were: a partial Lycoptera davidi, and a small jaw piece of a hyena. I didn't dare take out the fossils of the bag yet, as I was scared I would lose some of the broken off pieces and damage the fossils even more. Here they are: The damage on the Lycoptera isn't very severe; only a big block of matrix got loose (the fossil itself is still intact). But the damage on the hyena jaw is very bad: the big tooth split in two, and many other crumbs here and there. Here is what the jaw looked like before: I was wondering: is there a way to repair the fossils? As in stick them back into one nice piece? I can buy necessary material if it is cheap. Note that this would be my first fossil repair, and I have no experience whatsoever in the subject. Thanks in advance for your help, Max

I will upload the photos of the process later, but I am in the wilds of Maine with very limited cell reception right now. If anyone has broken megs like this one and wants to give them away, then send me a PM. I would love some advice on how to get the paint and colorations down better.

Hi forum, Newbie here. As the pics convey - I've had a breakage with my cephelapod. Can anyone suggest how to go about repairing? What adhesives should be used? Are there repairers who I could take this to instead? The fossil pieces fit together reasonably well. The backing is a concrete slab of sorts, so no idea how to bond this strongly enough given there is only around 3/4 inch surface area. Thank you.
