    Found near Missoula MT

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum, but I've been keeping my eyes on the ground for a while now, looking for interesting rocks and fossils. Recently I dug up this big rock while digging a drainage ditch on my place here in Western Montana. I'm located up against the Garnet range about 4 miles from the Blackfoot river, around 20 miles east of Missoula. I have no idea what this thing is, or what the nodules (?) are. The rock weighs ~70lbs by my estimation, and it very smooth except where the weird bumps and lumps stick out. It is not limestone, as I tested a small scraping with vinegar. Some areas have quartz features. One local rockhound said that maybe its a ball of ancient mudballs or perhaps worm castings but he wasn't sure. I haven't found any other rocks around that look like it... Any ideas? It's so cool looking! Feel free to ask any questions. Stromatolite Specimen

I was gifted a rock specimen from the estate of a professional geologist. I was immediately attracted to it as a tall, columnar structure very coral like. It has been cleanly sawn at the base and it layered, laminae structure immediately indicated stromatolite. It is about 15 inches tall and 5.5 inches at the base; it weighs about 7 pounds. At first I thought it was a fossil but these three things stand out contrary to that. First, it has air voids in it; it is not completely mineralized through. Second, the external layer is cleanly exposed. If it was a fossil, the surrounding matrix must have been highly erodible as the fine detail of the outside layer (visible exterior) is remarkable. Third, consistent with #1 and #2 the "rock" has not been metamorphosed. We have fossil stromatolites here in Minnesota and they are embedded structure in Mary Ellen Jasper, which is a beautiful rock. Unfortunately, I have no idea where this came from. The dad of my friend who gave it to me lived in South Dakota and was in the Pacific Theatre in WWII, but was not known to be much of a traveler otherwise. Based on my 3 reasons above, I think this may be a specimen of a modern, extant stromatolite that somehow ended up with the geologist. I know there are living modern stromatolites with columnar structure at Pavilion Lake BC, and at Lago los Centas in Porvenir, Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Certainly there are fossil examples of columns too in the record. Really just looking to see if anyone on this forum has seen anything like this before? It is beautiful in its own way. Thanks in advance. Bill J.
  4. Hello, I found this on my parents land in a pile of dirt they dug up. They live in Milesburg, PA. The object from this picture is about a foot long and about 4-5 inches in width. It has some kind of texture on the top of it, which you can see from the photos. It also has what looks like skin texture on the sides of it? The markings/holes on both sides seem to be in the same spots. The bottom of it fell off, so I included a pic of where it broke off from and what it looks like inside. It is also very heavy.

    Any ideas?

Hi there, Made an account to help with ID. I found this along the river Thames, London, UK at work. Rock nerd friend has never seen anything like it, but thinks something - a barnacle? - in some flint. A "flint inclusion in cortex" she said. Whole rock is ~3x5cm. The cool bit is maybe 1cm in diameter. Anyone seen one of these before? Thanks

    Strange cracks in rock!

Found this strange rock or fossil out in a creek on the land i’m currently living on in cross roads, tx. I was mostly intruiged by the cracks- though I wouldn’t be surprised nor disappointed if it was just a strange rock.
  11. This is rather light weight, and i was curious if anyone had an idea as to what this is. I was thinking bone? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Rock or Fossil?

I feel like and idiot since this is probably just a rock but I got to know for sure. I found this when I was in elementary school on the playground and at the time I thought it was petrified wood so I kept it. At the back of the playground there's a sand pit and beyond that, a fence that separates the sand pit from the woods. I found this right underneath that fence. This is in southern MA.

    Fossil or rock

Found this at the Peace river in FL. I am convinced it is a rock while my dad thinks it is a fossil because he has seen it before. I think my old man is crazy. Someone please end this debate with a definite answer haha
