Fossil Forum Family, Soon I’ll be making a trip over to southern Italy (in the Apulia and then Sicily Catania area) . Don’t know what my trip will consist of because I’m always all over the place when I’m there...but in the event I have some time to kill, does anybody have any suggestions for any cool dino activities, like must see footprints, fossils, museums, etc? I was thinking of making a trip to Altamura, where I hear that there are many dinosaur tracks to see. I may also make a trip over to Naples. I hear it has a cool dino museum there. Lastly, anyone know of any cool areas for fossil hunting/collecting ? (Namely Mesozoic fossils) Thanks everyone

Hi, I'll be visiting the Buxton area of Derbyshire and hope to find some fossils. I've read that Halldale Quarry and Butts Quarry are good sites. Are these sites still accessible and is collecting allowed? Thanks for any info.

Hi all! My name's Emma and I'm brand new to fossil hunting. I came across the site while trying to find out any information i could on fossils and what to keep an eye out for and on where to even start on prepping. It all began last year when me and my partner when on a break in Torquay and a visit to the quarry at Berry Head in Brixham... Which led to us stopping at Lyme Regis on the way home where we picked up a few nodules and concretions.. a year down the line and another visit to Lyme I've started my first prep work on a gryphaea (I think) that we collected last year. I've learnt a fair amount from the site so far and really looking forward to learning more as time goes on. If anyone has any tips or pointers I'm open to all the help I can get. photo of first prep

Hello! I happened across your site while searching for more information about fossils. I live in Florida but often visit relatives in Missouri. I've always liked to collect rocks that seemed interesting, but this year I brought home some neat fossils (maybe.) I look forward to posting in the ID forum to get some of your ideas.

when i was in miami during the summer i went to this mall in palm beach where they had this museum that has dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals but they are some fossils in there that i dont know what they are so i wanted them to have IDed.

Hello all, I am new to fossil hunting. I found these on my in-laws ranch in Montana. They are still in place and exposed to weather. Is there any way to find out what they are from? They are definately bone fossils. What part of an animal would have a thin area of bone surrounded by thick bones? The center area are very thin bones and the perimeter is much thicker bone. Since was a child I have looked for a nice and comfortable way to display my fossils. Finally, I have found the solution! I have bought an old typographic furniture and I have restored it.

Wow. I recently got back from a trip to visit some family in Buffalo, New York and Canada, Eh?. In Buffalo my Aunt and Uncle have a house on Lake Erie. It never occurred to me to look for fossils on the beach (mostly rocks down there), until this trip. So I went down for about an hour or so and broke a few rocks but mostly just found the fossils lying around. I can tell you, this was the most productive hour of fossil hunting in my life. I could barely go a minute without stumbling on one! I don’t even know what to do with all these. A great expirece overall and my Uncle especially enjoyed seeing all the treasures. So without further a due here we go... (sorry if the pics are a bit blurry my camera is trash) Enjoy! Brachiopods and such

My friend was telling me the other day that in the Wilmington, NC area, ( I think New Hanover County) They have sand mines where you can find fossils and shark teeth. Does anyone have any information on this, possibly a location?

Hi, I'm close to Washington D.C. and am heading to the Potomac sometime this month for a fossil hunting trip. Been obsessed with fossils for a while, and I'm also wondering as to where I can find fossils in the Nanjemoy formation. Cheers!

Dear fellow forum goers, These past few weeks have been quite busy, but that has not stopped me from going on the occasional fossil excursion. A few trips went by since my last posting and I decided to let some trips accumulate before posting again. On these trips I interacted with forum members @Woopaul5 and @frankh8147. The most recent trip was today, 08/12/18, and was somewhat productive. Frank found what we believe to be a part of a mosasaur brain case, which will surely be in his "finds of the year list". I was not as luck but ended up scoring a small point fragment and a jaw section of some fish. There were also some nice quality teeth that I found today. Other than this trip, I scored some nice finds on a few other trips throughout the two months. I hope you enjoy the finds, as I enjoyed finding them, and have a nice day. Since I've moved into my current house I have found all kinds of things on my property while collecting rocks to make a stone path through my woods. I have found old farm equipment parts, tools, and old glass bottles, and some interesting looking rocks. Hopefully I can get some things identified!

I was on the way to another area when I spotted some odd rock formations in the Pine Canyon area (Tooele Co. Utah). I may go back and dig through the sandy deposits near the rocks, but I didn’t want to waste my time if these are just sandy deposits void of fossils. So I wanted to get some input on them before I go back and dig under the hot August sun. Are these kinds of rocks typically found near fossils? The rock with the shell casing looks to have held a shell, but what if it’s a rock casing that is shaped like a shell? The 3rd picture is the bottom portion of the shell rock and the 4th picture is the bottom side of the sandy rock w/ calcium cabonate staining.

I'm trying to get an accurate id on my worm rocks that I found in a fossilized mud formation. The second rock picture is the back side of one of the worm rocks. The 3rd picture is a colorful rock found nearby. I wondered if ancient algae stained the rocks, or if someone has another explanation for the colors on the rock? All the rocks were found in the Oquirrh mountains (Ut).

I have a few different fossils I was hoping to get some help identifying. I’m brand new to collecting/hunting for fossils. If any other pictures are needed I’ll try to get the best ones possible!! These first teeth I found in Naples, Florida. I came across them by a river there. The second set of pictures is from the Montour Preserve in Danville, Pa.

I have been here at the forums for quite sometime now ( I think since I found my first fossils on a trip to Missouri close to 20 years ago?!) Work and life has been very busy and had prevented me from anything more than online hunting, you tube video's, and the lack of actual sites close to where I currently live. (Currently I live above the San Joaquin Valley, in a small mountain community named North Fork. I have had wonderful years here hunting arrow heads and various rocks and minerals, Have found many crystals at the old gold mine sites which are numerous over in Mariposa county next to me, and have had a great time up here! However, I took a trip to Missouri many moons ago to help a family member relocate out here to Nevada, which is when the unexpected happened. When we went to rent the moving truck to begin loading, my mom went inside to handle the rental, and as per my "norm" I took off walking across an open fields with, eyes to the ground,, towards the back of the lot and behind the row of trucks parked ready for rent, towards the railroad tracks. I was finding different minerals and such and then by chance I kicked over a plain down rudy clay looking rock, when I noticed it had a pattern to it. I looked closer and it was a plant fossil ! I was ecstatic, and thrilled does not even begin to cover it. I found several more all of different varieties when I began to notice what the 'commonalities' were with the ones I was finding. From that point on I was hooked! I made several trips back there just for the rock hunting and had found many wonderful 'treasures' which I cherished. I then began to explore more of Missouri to see what else there was to find in this state, and lets put it this way, the first thing on my bucket list is to return to Missouri!!! It got even better, after having my eyes opened so to speak as when we left there we headed to a ranch to spend the night that was owned by family back there. They have an 80 acre ranch. When we got there and I stepped out of the truck, I looked down and could NOT believe my eyes. There were fossils just laying around and exposed all up and down the dirt road which lead from the highway and into the 80 acres. I hunted for the rest of that evening and found more treasures. I have never forgotten that trip, and like I said I plan on gong back there one day before I die, and attempt to find more of those little treasures which made so darned happy so many years ago....and the family back there still owns the ranch too! I have since retired due to disability (heart) and find I have more time available than money naturally, so I am here to begin exploring what is available or close by where I live now, and also any near Fernley NV.. where I spend several months at at time there helping my Mom. I have small amounts of silver in quartz rock, (no gold yet though) many heads, awesome crystals, but my real desire is to find more fossils! So if anyone has any information or recommendations for me I would love to know about them! I am aware of the fossils found down in the Valley at the old landfill dump site in Madera, (wooly mammoth bones, sabre tooth tiger etc.) and I have heard of a dry creek bed somewhere down around the town of Dos Palos and of course Shark Hill and the Ernst Quarries and Ant Hill which is now closed. However its a vast area there, with miles and miles of open high desert area, which leads me to hope that those are not the ONLY areas where one can hunt for sharks teeth and other sea life fossils. Here's to hope! and forgive my long winded introduction but I am happy to be here once again and I'm looking forward to getting to know other members here. Thank you! Debra

Hey everyone, This is my second post hopefully I can get some answers on these! I found these in a town called Tunkhannock in Northeastern Pennsylvania in part of a mountainous area. They were just in some shale I was breaking up. Any kind of research I’ve done says there’s really not much for fossils in that area. Any ideas?? Thanks in advance friends! 1 2 3
