Today I stopped at the Gainesville Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida so my wife could see the Rainforest Butterfly Exhibit and walk among the butterflies. Well after doing that, I did what any good FF Member would do, I took a ton of pictures of their Fossil exhibits. It is a very nice museum and it is free, with the exception of special exhibits like the Butterflies. For your viewin pleasure, her are the pics- it will take a couple posts.

Ed's House of Gems ..... The Tradition Continues

Hello Everyone, Since I am away from my usual haunts and fossil hunts and currently on the left coast ... we decided (ok, I insisted like a small excited child) that we take our annual trip to Ed's House of Gems on Sandy Blvd. in Portland, Oregon. Since meeting my wife's folks and seeing her old stomping grounds as a child ... her family's frequent visits to this old dive bar of a rock shop was one of the extra bonuses that sealed the deal and now we have two kids. haha. Ok, so Ed's is a family run business and has been around at least as long as we have .. 40 + years. It is a building tucked a bit away from a street filled with mariner themed dive bars, Chinese restaurants, and establishments of ill repute (?) Ok, it's Portland so they have a bikini drive through coffee hut nearby as well..... Keeping it weird. The storefront has probably not changed over the decades so it borders on the kitsch .. which honestly is back in style now. It's just a fantastic trip down memory lane when 'my' family used to pile into a car for two weeks and drive across the desert Southwest (with one tape player between 3 kids) . These rock shops it seemed were dotted along the highway and we were screaming bloody murder anytime we spotted one, because my dad (I know) secretly wanted to stop at all of them as well. Piled in big metal caged bins were boulders of obsidian or agate, petrified wood, and rose quartz ... buy it by the pound. We usually left with our little trinkets and mineral treats. Always loved those stops, and they are a disappearing breed with online taking over and shuttering the brick and mortar locations. I think the other rock shop here in Oregon that is worth a look is a little place on the way to Bend, OR but I digress. Anyhoo .. inside the store is filled with everything a rockhound would want. Minerals in the rough, slabs, tools, tumblers, mineral specimens, Moroccan fakes, Moroccan real, Riker mounts, shells, fossils etc ..... I love every inch of that rock infested place .. and now it is a new tradition for the next generation. I hope it sticks around for a few more ......

Fake trilobites?

Hi, I'm concerned that these four trilobites may be fakes. I bought them a long time ago by a guy, who claimed they were genuine. Some of them, especially the Psychopyge, almost looks too good to be real. But I wanna know what other people think. Thanks. -
I created this topic for anyone who wants an opinion from others on a potential purchase. Not regarding if the price right, because that’s totally up to you...I’m more concerned about quality, rarity, etc. Post here if you’re on the fence about anything. To kick it off, I’m gonna share what I came across....I’m not sure on the availability on such things like dino eggs meaning, “do I wait or purchase?” I know there are fakes, and I know the quality comes in all ranges...the detail in this particular shell is interesting.... question is, would you hold off and wait for something better, or would you purchase this bit of shell? Not crazy expensive anyway. A magnified Titanosaur argentinosaurus eggshell x4. I sent the seller more specific questions.

I just bought a rock house and several of the rocks have these fossils. Can anyone tell me anything about them? I know very little about fossils. They are 3"-4" across and raised about 1/4"-1/2"

Traveling to Summerville to hunt for Shark Teeth and other Fossils

Hello. My son and I are heading to South Carolina to Summerville area and Folly Beach area to search for Shark Teeth. This is a big trip from California for 4 full days and we hope to find some great fossils. This is August 4th-7th. We are doing an excursion on the 4th. But for the next day or two it is quite hard to figure which creeks/rivers are OK to go to which will give us some luck. Any insights? Checked the forums but it has been hard to find exactly where to go. On the last day we head to Folly beach to see what is there. Any insight on what section to start with? I have been following the tide charts. Thank you! -

Hey all, I'm planning to buy everything i need to prep my finds next week. I'm very new to this so please if something is wrong or i missed something let me know. I plan on plugging the compressor in my garage and doing the actual pen work outside. 1. Pneumatic Fossil Preparation Pen. Model TT 2. SGS 50L Air Compressor 2.5HP 3. Air Compressor Oil 4. Water Trap 5. 10m Air Line Hose 6. 3M Dust Mask Did I get everything and are these the correct things to buy? Thank you.

Hello all, I am currently on Holiday in Greece and then on the islands Zakynthos and Kefalonia. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are things to find here. I searched on the internet but only found that there are some fossils on the top of the highest mountain in Kefalonia. But that is closed at this time in summer to prevent forest fires. Anyone else knows any locations?

Australian Marine Invertebrate Fossils to Trade

Hello Everyone. I have recently returned from some fossil collecting trips and have many Australian invertebrate fossils to trade. I have a large collection of sea urchins, gastropod, bryozoa and other marine invertebrates to trade. The Victorian fossils I have to trade are Miocene to Pliocene and the New South Wales fossils are Devonian and Permian. I would like in return vertebrate fossils. ( Sharks teeth, fish and shark vertebra, mammal bone, etc.) I am also happy to trade overseas. Thanks, Daniel -
My son and I are avid bottle collectors and have decided to keep an eye out for fossils too. Have seen plenty of them along the rivers and creeks that we explore.hopimg to make friends and to learn something new.

Hello, my name is Elbert from The Netherlands, I am new into collecting fossils, I hope this forum will learn me a lot. I started collecting dino toys and JP/JW items from when I was a kid, now I would love to buy my first fossils, of course I know many are fake so I hope this forum will teach me and hope to meet some people with similar interests. I am also looking for good shops who sell fossils and checking where in Europe I can check to dig for fossils myself. XD

Final fossil! After this I'll be submitting fossils as I find them. Thank you to everyone who helped me learn more about these fossils! Because of the smooth texture on the surface, it seems like this chunk is part of a fossilized seabed, with various things stuck in it. I see a few basic shells and crinoids, but there's lots of smaller things I'm not sure on. (2/2) ^Anyone know what the above thing is in the middle? The white rectangle bit?^ ^Quite a bit going on in the one. To keep under the upload limit the pictures aren't the best quality, but I can upload a reply with a better quality picture.^ ^There seems to be a faint rust-colored outline in the middle of this picture. Any ideas?^ ^Underside with another rust-colored something. Is this even a fossil?^

Even though ive moved and sold lots of stuff off this desk, im still surrounded by rocks when I do the computer stuff. Having a stroke really sucks, but just look at all this rock cra-p surrounding me. Gee gads! Dang it all to heck! I think I can live with it. I especially love the big crab above and look at it just about every morning with my coffee. I was also out in my garage this morning rearanging things and cleaning up to make for more room and ran into this rather large Diplomystus I had forgotten about. Still have to get this one prepped out. RB
