Since we have to avoid crowded places due to the current situation , it was a good excuse to go out fossil hunting in the open. We went to the beach at the Cenomanian chalk cliffs, and we were in for a big surprise. The day before we got there, there was a big spring tide, the high water levels cleaned up all of the scree piles from the winter landfalls. Lots of fossils were emerging from the lose boulders on the beach, sometimes even just laying around waiting to be picked up. We even got a few new species for our collection: Natalie found a nice Turillites scheuzerianus and I found a straight shelled Sciponoceras baculoides. And of course multiple large ammonites of the more common species like Acanthoceras and Cunningtoniceras. This might be one of the best field trips we ever got at this location. lots of ammo's: After spending most of the sunday prepping: Sciponoceras baculoides: Turillites scheuzerianus:

Some goodies from the last few monthes (Trilobites heavy topic)
elcoincoin posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hi all, I have been more or less away from the forum for the last few monthes. Life has been hectic. And if i still managed to go on the field quite a lot, i did have any time left for the rest (writing, taking photos, processing stuff, labelling etc). Nevertheless, i finally manage a quick photo session. As an appetizer, what is prolly the best piece for quite some time. A double trilo, Eodalmanitina sp, one preserved with his caudal spine. So 2 rocks as a starter . I had to sacrifice part of the 2 counterprints, to unveil the opposite trilo... Regards.- 15 replies

Presentation of an Oligocene outcrop in southern france
Pixpaleosky posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
This time let's have a look in Oligocene, one of my favorite. The Oligocene in this topic includes 2 different localities with slighlty different periods of time : Stampian (-33.9 - 28.1) and Chattian (-28.1 -23). Back in time, Europe experienced a distension at the origin of a great tear of the continental crust: the Western European rift, which produces an alignment of ditches of collapse from the North Sea to the Gulf of Lion. Lakes, with locally marine connections, occupy these ditches. The best example is the series of great Oligocene lakes of Provence. The climate is cooler and drier than in the previous era. As a result, the environment is modified: extinctions and replacements occur within wildlife. Following the refreshment, the flora has a sub-temperate character. It is thus dominated by the elements of the North European flora associated with warmer species, witnesses of earlier flora that survived the cooling. Provence at this time is covered with a series of lakes (depressions of Aix, Apt and Manosque). At the bottom of these silts were deposited on large thickness, forming limestone in thin sheets, fossilizing fauna and flora. We can discover fish, leaves, insects, and exceptionally were found crocodile, birds, bats, frogs ... The sea was close and sometimes corresponded with the lakes. The climate was tropical, from where an abundant flora composed of palms, pine trees … Finally, the Pyreno-Corsican-Sardinian massif gave way and left the sea rush into Provence, covering the lands that were previously emerged. The lakes give way to a warm and shallow sea, which I invite you to discover on the previous topic: Presentation of a Miocene outcrop form Souther France The rock is made of very thin layers which have to be opened carefully to discover the fossils. This specimen came to me via Sophie @fifbrindacier, @Coco and Santa. It is from the Eifelian, Middle Devonian of Col d'Aubisque, France and was labelled Calceola sandalina, which it clearly isn't, but may be a coral. Any ideas, anyone? It is sort of rectangular, widening upwards, but concave on each of the four sides. No signs of horizontal growth lines. Thank you, Adam. Reverse. Hey folks... Here is a question that came up today at work. Did anyone find fossils in all the rock that was brought to the surface when the Chunnel was being built? Did any of you folks in southern UK and northern France get to have a look at these rocks? Thanks

Grey limestone and white chalk, Jurassic and Cretaceous fieldtrip.
Manticocerasman posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
A new fieldtrip to the coast of northern France this Saturday. In the morning we prospected the beaches with Jurassic deposits whit a few friends. Not an easy place to look for fossils, but Natalie fond a large Ichthyosaur vert and I found a neat little echinoid in the shingle. At noon our local friends hat to go, so Natalie and I made a stop a little more up North on our way home. We went to the beaches at the chalky Cretaceous cliffs. Here we had a lot of luck, the sea had cleaned up the cliff falls that had occurred a few weeks back. In a short amount of time we managed to find around 6 complete Acanthoceras ammonites scattered on the beach. Time to hit the prep table again The jurassic ( Titonian ) site: The Cretaceous ( Cenomanian )site Prepping pictures will follow- 30 replies

On our Christmas fossil hunting trip Natalie found a nice Acanthoceras rothamagense in a loose boulder on the beach, All we had to do is reduce the size of the boulder to make it fit in the backpack. A few days ago I removed a large chunk of exces matrix with a powertool. Today I took the time to prepp the whole ammonite. this is the result after 4 to 5 hours of prepwork: The final result: Acanthoceras rothamagense Upper Cenomanian Cap-Blanc-Nez ( France ) 20cm in diameter

Like last year Natalie and I spent 4 days on a fossil hunting trip on a few different locations on the northern coast of France. Each day a different location. The stormy weather conditions made the beaches realy favorable foor fossil hunting as lots of specimens could be found loose on the beaches. We started Saturday with Turonian sea urchins, sunday Kimmeridge clay and limestone, monday turonian ammonites and the last day mostly cenomanian fossils. Highlights of the trip were a few large ammonites ( Lewisceras and Acanthoceras ) and a rare tooth of a marine reptile from the Kimmeridge deposits.

Please pay attention to postal charges for international shipments. Although for few parcels it is not too high. We must keep in mind. That I live in Switzerland. If you are interested in letting me know. Best regards. Here is the list: Dictyothyropsis runcinata, Middle Oxfordian, Canton Aargau, Switzerland Argovithyris biremsdorfensis, Middle Oxfordian, Canton Aargau, Switzerland Zittelina orbis, Middle Oxfordian, Canton Aargau, Switzerland Digonella divionensis, Lower Callovian, Department of Côte-d'Or, France ( To finish cleaning) Musculina sanctaecrucis, Hauterivien, Canton Neuchâtel, Switzerland

Hello and Happy New Year to all! Hope you all had a great time I saw these two interesting trilobite positive and negative from the Montagne Noire in France. I would be interesting in knowing their species and if they are rare/hold any value if possible (without giving numbers of course) Unfortunately 2 out of the 3 pictures are very poor quality. Hope you can still tell. Number one could be some kind of Psychopyge sp. ??? Curious to know your thoughts. Kind regards.

Last Week-end I went in the area of Aix en Provence in South of France. i wanted to find some clues of dinosaur eggs for further digging next spring. I wealked in the red badlands of the region, with nice sun and landscapes. I finally found eggshells fragments, coming from destroyed eggs because of the rain. I also spotted a few eggs in section. Enjoy the pictures ! CAN YOU SPOT THE SHELLS ? HALF EGG ABOUT 20 CM IN THE STONE

So for several years i knew that getting better prepresults would have to include a air abrader. With my Junair silent compressor this was problematic as there is not enough airflow, so these last years i was limited to pen work.... A few month’s ago my beloved Junair got a leak in the tank, repair was not very cheap, so i upgraded to a much more powerful compressor, not silent but workable....I also bought a very old Renfert abrader, very cheap, which after replacing the filter set started to work very fine.... So here’s some prep results with this setup. At last i was able to prep a few of my finds from my 2012 trip to the Lafarge quarry at Belmont, France. Allthough i ‘m really happy with the results so far, it’s a very slow process, even with the replaced filterset on the Renfert. Some matrix is just too problematic for this Renfert machine. I’m not sure why, maybe it’s not effective enough, or maybe it’s because the unit is limited to 6 bar, so i cannot push it more..... At the moment i’m waiting my custom build Eckhard Petersen abrader, this unit should cover it. So i hope for more and better pix in the future....
