  1. @GeschWhat had the opportunity to join us in this hunt, but requested a picture of my find instead. To appease her request today, I hastily put this report together: @RandyB and his lovely wife are currently on a 2-3 week fossil tour of the western US and I volunteered to provide them with a little fossil hunting during a rest period on their way west. We had a wonderful time, maybe chatting as much as fossil hunting during their short break from driving. We were in the middle of dairy country and the smells of fresh cut alfalfa mixed in with a little "coprolite" permeated the air. To show their appreciation for my time, I was gifted a few fossils. Cretaceous ferns and shark teeth. THANK YOU!!! Randy and his wife (see, I told you I would forget your name) are such a lovely couple, and I love it that both husband and wife like to fossil hunt together. While scouting the area ahead of their arrival, I stumbled on this stromatolite that I would love to set in my back yard as a table. This site has all of the normal Ordovician fossils which "Randy's wife" concentrated on. But I sensed ahead of time that Randy had an interest in finding a trilobite and he was successful!!!! Notice the X. It marks Randy's honey hole!! Don't tell him I showed you. A close up of his trilobite: A nice complete roller of an unknown trilobite to me, to go with countless pygidiums and cephalons of many species. @piranha Not bad for a few hours hunting. Here are a few more from this site, unfortunately, some found after their departure. Isotelus? Hopefully more embedded in the matrix. This is going home to Pennsylvania. This unknown specimen was found too late to send it with: I just noticed in the last photo something bumpy below the trilobite. An eye? Next is a Cerarurus?? Unfortunately, bit weathered. This site is where I found my complete Dolichoharpes reticulatus so it was surprising another great find came my way. Not nearly as rare but absolutely complete. A Thaleops ovata. Both points on the cephalon are there and the genial spine on one side perfect, the other side hopefully embedded in the matrix. I will have this one professionally prepped to ensure the front of the trilobite can be displayed properly.

    Australia

I have a particular thought for our friends of Australia. I hope you're all well mates. Here is a sad but touching video i found on the rescue of a Koala. https://www.lapresse.ca/international/asie-et-oceanie/201911/20/01-5250503-un-koala-sauve-dune-foret-en-flammes-en-australie.php

    Florida With Friends

As always, my yearly Florida trip report will be picture heavy and cover a multitude of activities, some of the story line may be embellished with a few (actually many) exaggerations. To begin with, why would any sane person want to leave this countryside behind for the lush greenery that Florida provides? My yearly trip to Florida blessed me in many ways, most importantly, uniting me with our son for a few weeks. My son lives in Bradenton and we had a wonderful time together. Unfortunately, he had to work during much of this period, which left me with ample opportunities to explore what Florida has to offer a fossil enthusiast. Upon arrival, we started our vacation by meeting up with Jack @Shellseeker and his wife for a delightful lunch at a very nice restaurant on Sanibel Island. Jack even presented me with dessert (some wonderful fossils that he had recently found). From there we proceeded northward to Bradenton. The following morning, my wife and I had a shopping list to take care of. I am not a shopper, so when we arrived at Costco, I was ecstatic to see the grounds surrounding the building were not finished and talked Jeanette into leaving me mosey around outside while she shopped. As with most exposures in this area of Florida, fossils abound. In fact, I did find a Megalodon tooth next to the building. (true!) Beat up, but what a way to start this vacation!! In the mornings to come, I took the opportunity to explore various areas in Bradenton where digging had occurred. As always plentiful shells from the Tamiami Formation were discovered. MikeR has graciously agreed to ID them before I post my finds. So, it may be a few weeks before this can be accomplished. But on with the most exciting part of my trip. Jeff @jcbshark and Jack, two guys that I used to call “guides” but now call good friends, allowed me once again to join them in an adventurous Kayak trip deep into the heart of Florida’s interior. We met at the launch just as the sun could be seen shining through the old moss covered oak trees. The beach was beautifully white, the water calm and clear. All indications pointed towards a fun day ahead of us. Jeff on the left, Jack on the right led the way to a secret fossil site. My paddling skills are not anywhere near their level and I headed up the rear. Truth be told, they often had to wait for me to catch up. After having traversed a mile or so, the river began to NARROW.

    Thanksgiving 2018

I would like to take a moment to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! I realize that not all forum members may celebrate this Holiday but I still hope you all have a good day. For me, this is a day for reflecting on what I am thankful for. I am Thankful for my loving family. My Mom and Dad who raised me. My wife and kids who are my life. I am thankul for my job. I am thankful for my friends. I am thankful for The Fossil Forum and all of the wonderful members whom I have met, or atleast have interacted with in some way. I am Thankful for the generousity and kindness you have bestowed upon me. I am Thankful to have a place that I can turn to share my passion with others. As this year edges nearer to its end I look forward to what next year has to bring. Again I hope you all have a great day. Sincerly Dave
