North Carolina GMR Greenville Alternatives for Meg Fossil Hunt

Hello all! I am from Michigan but vacationing in Emerald Isle, NC right now. I fossil hunt often in Michigan but North Carolina is brand new for me. I would love to hunt somewhere off the beaten path that is fossil rich either in a creek with gravel, a quarry, or anywhere else that is not super picked over. My main goal is to find a meg but I love finding any fossils really. I am planning a day trip to GMR but if anyone would be willing to share any tips or suggestions for other places (within 2 hours of emerald isle) that are meg tooth hotspots I would greatly appreciate it. Hey everyone! On my outings, I usually don't pick up the bone fragments, but I have stumbled upon a rather large pocket of good sized bone fragments that I would love some help in identifying. If no dice here, I'll get whatever is left ID'd at a museum this weekend. Fossil #1 - Going to take my best guess and say a rib of some sort? Help to ID what appears to be a tooth root segment from GMR NC

Found this digging in greens mill run NC the other day - was in stuff that was a mix of the Yorktown and Cretaceous typical for that creek - so found with crow shark, great whites , giant whites , whale bone fragments and ear bones etc.. It reminds me in shape of the tooth root chunks I frequently find at gmr of the enchodus but obviously much much much larger than those and the bone on this is much more porous as well though I’m not experienced enough to know if that’s from aging wear or not, honestly. Anyhow if anyone knows what tooth root segment this might be from or if I’m totally -

Hey everyone, I'll be in Wilmington, North Carolina for a wedding next week and I'm super excited to check out GMR for the first time. I expect the water will be frigid, to say the least. Does anyone in the area know how high the water level is now? I know a guy who may have hip waders or boots I could borrow, but it would be a huge bummer if we got there and I found out the water level was too high for either of those. They're too bulky to pack in carry-on luggage, so bringing my own pair isn't an option. On that note, if anyone knows of a place nearby (Greenville or Wilmington) w -
Hello. I came across this fossil recently while at GMR in Greenville, North Carolina. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what it came from & what part. My friend I went with thought it was some sort of jawbone piece. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I found this unusual little guy in my screen at GMR. I don't think it is fossilized, but I was hoping someone out there recognized the tooth. My guess is racoon, badger or something like that. Thanks.

Found several Great White shark teeth in the creek last weekend along with a few makos. . My best find was this Great White (2-1/2") below. It has all serrations and a complete root. Also, found one partial whale inner ear bone (periotic) and one small croc tooth. The creek was really running high and fast the day before. due to rain on Friday.

Had a pretty productive afternoon on Sunday. No large teeth but tons of small ones and lots of bone. One partial shark vert! Some...seeds? That I'm not sure on. Along with one other thing that I'm not sure on.

Another find this weekend, actually Rick found it but let me bring it home, want to confirm that it's a petrosal and also what species based on my research I believe it to be. Found: Greensmill Run, Greenville NC among a huge array of items (whale bone including several tempanic bulla, shark teeth (great white, tiger,crow, Giant White Shark etc) and two Enchodus teeth etc. Believed to be a Petrosal from Balaenoptera Sursiplana? I thought (from one specific article/image reference below) that is was possibly Plesiobalaenoptera but it noted they are only found in Italy

Hi. Found this digging in Green Mill Run, nc. I am sure it is bone, but it might not be a vertebrae. (Husband really wants to find a whale vert, so maybe this is a partial?) Also it has definitely turned into a rock, it is no longer light and airy like a more modern bone thanks so much!!

Hi all. Found this vertebra the other day in Greens Mill Run (Eastern NC). I immediately thought this one looked different than any other vertebra I have found. I initially thought reptile, but cannot find a good match in any reference or from anything in my collection. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Hello! A little context: this is my very first post, and the item in question resulted from my second ever fossil hunt. I have very little knowledge but a metric ton of curiosity. My husband and I found this item today from material we sifted from the bottom of a creek bed through a 1/4” screen. We were at a place called Green Mills Run (GMR) in Greenville, NC, which I have gathered through even my minimal experience is a prime location for finding all kinds of spectacular specimens. Hello! First post here, looking for an ID on this item. I found this on my recent trip to GMR, North Carolina. To my untrained eye it looks like it could be some type of herbivore tooth, but it could also very well be just a rock. Any help is appreciated! I don’t have a metric ruler, so I had to use one with inches. Pictured is the front for length, on its side for width, on its back for reference, and then me holding the item at an angle to show more if it’s top features.

Hey, I’m wanting to go to GMR tomorrow because it’s the first day that lines up with me and my boyfriends schedule, but I am wondering if anyone is in that area that can tell me if it’s too flooded to go? I know it’s been raining a bit but it hasn’t rained for a few days so I’m just wondering if it’s clear to go fossil hunting. We live about 3 hours away so it’s a bit far to just hope for the best haha. Thank you!

Greetings! I am new to fossil hunting and have been doing a couple beach hunts in North Carolina with some success. I finally made it to Greens Mill Run for the first time and was not disappointed. My two buddies and I each came away with some interesting finds. Their very first sifts included the Mosasaur and Sawfish teeth, respectively! What are the odds!? We spent 5 hours on the river and found many smaller teeth and tons of belemnites. At our last location I pulled up this megalodon tooth! Hi there! I went fossil hunting today at GMR and found all these awesome bones! I am most interested in what the top row, first 3 on left could be. They were found right next to each other. all the other bones were found in a close distance (within 10 feet) of the first 3. Thank you for any and all help! if anyone has any input on any other bones in the first pic, I would appreciate that as well

Hey-oh! I found this while at GMR and I'm clueless as to what (if anything) it is. I've been though my fossil books and online but the curvature and the indention marks have me puzzled. I've not found something like this before. My luck it is a weird curious rock.. if it is, I'm just going to imagine it's a meg eye lid or something hahaha As always, I welcome your thoughts and appreciate you all Steve

Howdy all! I'm super excited about this and I'm looking for expertise and knowledge from all of you! I'm working in Chapel Hill, NC next week and I've paved out a day to FINALLY visit GMR!!! I'm a total noob to this area and what to expect. I've been doing research but I would humbly ask you all about your experiences, local knowledge, where to park (safely), points of entry, tools to bring (i have an good idea), areas to avoid, concerns, etc... Last Thursday I had the pleasure of meeting up with board members @sixgill pete and @AshHendrick to hunt Green Mill Run in North Carolina. We met in a school parking lot and Pete kindly gifted me with some matrix and other various fossils including a mammoth tooth and megalodon tooth. Then we went down to the creek where we searched for a place to dig. And boy did we dig. These Carolina boys don't mess around. Found this at GMR the weekend of the Aurora festival. Could this be an Angustidens or possibly older? It’s really worn so an exact ID might not be possible but it seems the cusps would have been really prominent had they not been so worn. This was sifted from the creek bed. Is Auriculatus a possibility in this case? It was very interesting to me.
