I believe it’s a flint core because it feels really soft and smooth. I love it’s look but when I look at the end of it there’s a golden color (please tell me it’s gold)! I’m sure it’s not .... haha... it won’t wash off or scratch off easily. Any ideas? Thanks for your help! Found in Ohio in a field ,in North central area.

I found this rock and thought it had some interesting features, including plant life. It is very hard and heavy for its size... can anyone tell me more about it?

Mare and I are headed to Eastern Oregon for a combined rock hunting/fossil hunting/gold prospecting trip. The month of June seems to be a good time as things have dried out, kids are still in school, and fire season hasn't really started in earnest. We'll be heading to Fossil, wandering over to Prairie City and the John Day country, then dropping down to Izee. We'll end up stopping at Delintment Lake, Glass Butte, and Hamton Butte. Our 20' RPOD travel trailer will be "base camp." A series of side trips will include visits to the Painted Hills and Sheep Rock Units of the FossilBeds National Monument. I am primarily interested in searching for ammonites but do plan on an obligatory stop at Wheeler High School for plant specimens. Obsidian and limb casts are also on my collection list. I've done a lot of research and map recon and will share pics of the trip upon return. Any suggestions on what to look for - and where - will be cheerfully appreciated!

As many of you may be aware, I quite like quietly sitting prepping little fossils with my board pins. And last year I was sent a pin vice by the wonderful @JohnBrewer And ever since, I've been happy as a very happy thing with my loupe and pins, prepping away. But all my pins have become blunt. So, I've got some more! Only the best for my fossils! Trouble is they only last about 10 seconds each. Hey ho!

I noticed that there wasn't much of a collective spot for gold panning so I made one. I've had a couple encounters with gold panning and quite enjoyed it. I'm thinking of adding a gold panning kit to my fossil-hunting arsenal just for those hunts that are less productive or for those camping trips when you've run out of gas for those big-boy toys. Any gold panning experts on here that are willing to share some experience in what they're kits consist of? Also, if they're willing, post a pic or story about their biggest piece they've found.

Some various pieces of pyrite, gold, hematite and some other gems or minerals I'm not sure what the composition is. I found most of this up in Northern WI, This piece I found in Upper Michigan. Not sure of the rock or mineral composition put it has a large piece of copper ore (growing?) off the bottom of it.

This guy found a nugget weighing 177 ounces, or 5.5 kilograms. Maybe TFF folks should keep their eyes open for the shiny stuff, too. http://www.abc.net.a...-nugget/4470016

Hi gang, back to ask another question. I live in Las Vegas, NV. While out fossil hunting I noticed a sparkly rock on the ground. I picked it up and put it in my pocket. When I got home, I emptied my pockets and came across a rock that appears to have gold in it with some dark red and purple colors. It weighs 2.95 oz. I'm not sure what I stumbled on. Please help me ID this rock.
