  1. The Paleontological Society of Austin gets to go to the Lake Jacksboro site once a year.. Dallas Society also goes out there, so we try to make sure not to overlap, but surprisingly, the site is so productive, there's always great stuff to find! The Carboniferous Period- Pennsylvanian site is well known for its wide variety of fauna. I've been out there a dozen times and almost every time I find something new! It may seem a bit desolate, but it's worth the trek! My first happy find was a crinoid calyx. As with most Pennsylvanian sites, crinoids are prolific. But I've not found much complete crinoid material...but this time, I found two! Another fossil that is a special find out there is a little thing called a Rostroconch. It was originally thought to be a bivalve, but has been given it's own class. This is only the third one I've found. They are not common. Another of the most sought after fossils there are the Goniatites and Nautiloids. The big ones are rarely found whole, but you can also find tiny ones in the micro zone. Gonioloboceras and Tainoceras are the most common largeish ones and I have yet to find a GOOD complete one of either. I have found a few Gonioloboceras what were either almost whole or were so weathered that they look like zombies! This time I THOUGHT I had finally found a good complete one! This is what I saw and my heart did a flip flop! Unfortunately when I cleaned it up, the center was eroded but I actually kind of like the other side, even though it is weathered and a little "zombified" at least it's mostly whole! But the zigzag sutures are amazing! I found a few smaller ones in the field, but the big payday was the two 5 gallon buckets of micro matrix I brought home with me from the micro zone and found a PLETHORA of tiny goniatites this time! Top Row- R: Glaphyrites millsi C: Imitoceras grahamensis L: Neodimorphoceras texanum Bottom Row: Prouddenites grafordensis C: Wiedeyoceras pingue L: Unknown But this is kind of fascinating - it was encased in a little bit of matrix, so I tried to break it off but ended up kind of breaking the whole thing. But because of that, it released the tiny interior! Peritrochia sp. I certainly wish it were whole, but it's still fascinating to see the interior. Another new find was this little Brachiopod Fimbrinia - I'd been looking for one of these for a while and finally found one! Another nice little Brach with a surprising pearlescent surface - Kozlowskia splendens Also found this little Orbiculoidea missouriensis Here is an unusual coral called Palaeacis perpendicularis Found lots of cool gastropods, but my all time favorite is Cymatospira montfortianus I am already excited about getting back out there, maybe in the Fall because Texas summertime is NOT when you want to be out on those flats!
  2. I had recently made a visit to Besom Hill, Old Ham, Manchester, UK for the spectacular remains of carboniferous fossils such as calamities, gastrioceras, and many more. Although I found some strange impressions in the shales (Listeri Marine band) and wished to get some idea on what it might be. It appears as an impression on the dark shale, has a sort of 3D impression on bottom and top. The pattern is lines radiating in a parallel manner, with slight but observable curvature. Surface is not flat, rather slightly wavy. First impression was possibly burrows, but probably not. Would it be some sort of shell or plant impression instead? Another specimen follows along as a cylinder.

    Found this almost 2 years ago, but to my surprise, I never uploaded it! This is an interesting Goniatid as it seems to have Cerattic suture patterns. This is dated to the Pennsylvanian and most likely is from the Iola ls (Raytown member?) and is a beautiful specimen even though it is incomplete.

    Adam's Early / Lower Devonian

    The Devonian period is known as "The Age of Fish", but could also be known as "The Age of Brachiopods." In the Early / Lower Devonian, brachiopods reached the height of their diversity towards its end in the Emsian. We see the ancestral groups occurring, lingulids, craniids, orthids, protorthids, pentamerids, rhynchonellids and strophomenids, as well as the later successful groups we have seen before such as atrypids, athyrids and orthotetids, plus the rise of spiriferids, spiriferinids and productids and the beginning of the terebratulids. By the end of the Devonian , several of these groups are extinct or severely reduced in importance and brachiopods never quite recover. Also, the Devonian is the last time we see trilobites with such variation, large sizes and numbers and orthocerids too are much more uncommon after the rise of the goniatites. The massive tabulate coral reefs also disappear after the Devonian. Fascinating period and I hope to share some of its wonders with you. Equally, a lot of this is rather new to me, so I would be very grateful for any assistance, corrections or further information on my specimens. Thank you. The Early Devonian epoch is split into three stages, so let's start with the first of those, the Lochkovian, that began about 419 mya and finished roughly 411 mya. I have been sent a nice selection of brachiopods from the Kalkberg Formation, Helderberg Group by the Mighty @Misha, mostly. But the kind gentleperson also sent me this fascinating little bryozoan hash : It is dominated by fenestellids, which is usually the case in the Devonian, but other orders sill occur. These ones, I think, are Fenestella, but there are so many species in the formation that I wont take a guess as to species : Not sure what this one is ;

  6. Hello everyone! Hope you have all had a good day. I have just finished a long day of work; clearing out my old display case and bookcase, photographing my specimens, carrying my new cabinet and bookcase up from the garage. Now, I am going to post some photographs of Palaeozoic fossils I would like identification of. I will send the other fossil photos later. For any of these I would like the most specific identification possible, as I am creating labels for my fossil display. Sorry if the lighting is poor. If any of you want them, I can take more photos tomorrow. Specimen 1: Calymenid I obtained this Calymenid Trilobite from a museum. I do not know the location, although due to the large volume of commercially available fossils from the country I would suspect Morocco. I initially believed it to be a specimen of Calymene celebra, due to the shape of the cephalon and the bulging eyes, but found out that in Morocco the closely related Felxicalymene is more common. Are there any noticeable distinguishing features between different types of Calymenids one of you or I could identify on the fossil specimen? If anyone has a guide, it would be very helpful. Specimen 2: Goniatite I obtained this Goniatite from a museum. Seeing as the museum described it as coming from the Jurassic, I wanted to double check their identification, as Gonitaites were only present in the Palaeozoic, and after cross-referencing the specimen with online images, I am pretty sure it is a Goniatite. The museum's labels stated the specimen came from Madagascar, but the fossil seems to be most similar to Goniatites from Morocco. What are all of your opinions on the fossil's identity? Specimen 3: Orthocone I do not remember where I obtained this Orthocone from, but I do know it came from Morocco and that I bought it as 'Orthoceras. However, the exact taxonomy of Moroccan Orthocones seem to be in a bit of a mess, as Orthoceras was a wastebasket taxon, and is now considered to only be found in Europe. Different sources have identified Moroccan Orthocones such as this one as 'Arionoceras' or 'Orthocycloceras' (the latter name in particular was used in the 2021 DK Fossil Handbook). Which one would be the more appropriate name? Or is another name more valid? Thank you all for your support! Tomorrow, when I find the time, I will post some Mesozoic and Cenozoic animal fossils, Triassic plant fossils and some fossils I am concerned might be fake.
  7. Last wekend Natalie and I had a quick little field trip to my favorite quarry in southern Belgium. The prospecting was done in the rain, but it cleaned of the dust of the sree piles, so we did find some decent stuf. Most of it were goniatites, but Natalie also found a nice orthocone and we did find quite a few placoderm remains. Natalie found this nice loose Manticoceras, just a little chemical preparation and the air scribe to clear out the center: The orthocone she found, after the prepp: One of the Manticoceras I found was a lot harder to prep: a fragment of a median dorsal plate from a large arthrodire placoderm: And a little nodule with a very well preserved bone fragment, It turned out to be the posterior part of an infragnathal

    Jacksboro Hunt

    Howdy folks. Been a while since I’ve posted. I went through some significant personal losses and haven’t been on TFF in much longer than I’d have liked. After over a year, I’ve finally gotten out to hunt, this time in an area I’d never been to. (Also, if you’re in the Jacksboro area, my water bottle unfortunately fell out of my backpack, and I would really like to get it back since it’s been on a lot of trips with me. I’d pay someone to go get it if they’re nearby!) The weather was pretty nasty, raining and thundering a good amount of the time I was out hunting. But with new erosion, there was a lot of good stuff to be found. I will be updating this post with new photographs as I get things clean, everything is pretty muddy. IDs and information is welcomed, I am not familiar with Pennsylvanian material. A nice little Gastropod was the first thing to greet me. It was quickly followed by a straight nautiloid, which I found being one of my favorite things to pick up. Lovely bit of Goniatite. Probably my favorite thing to find here. Fresh whitetail deer tracks, probably only a couple hours old from earlier in the morning, right through the exposure. Held my breath for a moment, hoping this might be more whole, while it was, the condition is pretty poor. Still a nice find. The plains were standing in water about 3-5 inches deep across the entire area. In about a week, it will be an absolute nightmare! Tens of thousands of mosquito larvae.

  13. I recently found this rather good (for the area) and rare goniatite, probably Girtyoceras sp. The innermost half of the living chamber has a mass of small rods which a few knowledgeable friends have suggested are faecal pellets from something that took up residence. It's in an ironstone nodule from a Brigantian (U. Mississippian) shale in Co. Durham, N.E. England. Fairly shallow water, with a diverse fauna of brachiopods, bivalves, bryozoa, small corals, crinoids etc., often broken up. I haven't seen any arthropods apart from small Paladin trilobites which are quite common. At first I thought they were iron mineral alteration structures (e.g. goethite) but I can't see any in other similarly preserved specimens from the same locality and I was quickly persuaded by the pellets idea. I'd be grateful for any suggestions or similar examples. Scale in mm Inside venter Other side - none visible here.
  14. Took a little trip to Lake Jacksboro spillway and concentrated on the microzone hoping to find some of the little goniatites and nautiloids. Only found a couple that were "big enough" to see , but once I went through my bag of matrix, I was happy to have found quite a few of the microfauna! A few I am not sure of the ID so any help is appreciated! All of these are 1/8 to 1/16 inch Goniatite Peritrochia sp. Nautiloid Gastrioceras listeri same as above, I think Goniatite Prouddenites bosei Goniatite Cardiella ganti Goniatite Pronorites sp. Not sure what this one is: Nor this one. A few other nice little finds I think this is a shark spine: A scaphopod Plagioglypta sp. a tiny whole Rostroconch (had only found half ones prior) and a Trilobite spine!
  15. Hi everyone! Around 2 months ago on the 16th of october 2021 I went on a fossil hunting trip with the BVP to the stone quarry of Lompret in Belgium. https://www.paleontica.org/locations/fossil/654 The rocks in this quarry are Devonian in age and date back to the Frasnian (382.7 million years ago to 372.2 million years ago) with the finds mostly being from both the Neuville and Matagne Formations. According to Tom our excursion leader this quarry exists out of what used to be coral reefs and islands that formed around atolls. The fossils that you can find in this quarry are Brachiopods, Bivalves, Gastropods, Corals, Bryozoans, Cephalopods like Goniatites and Othocone Nautiloids and in very rare cases Placoderm and trilobite material (although no one was that lucky during the excursion). The quarry is also very rich in minerals like Baryte, Calcite, Quartz, Galena, Fluorite, etc... I have long looked forward to visiting this quarry, so I was very happy to finally be able to go and it did not dissapoint! It was quite foggy in the morning when we arrived which both looked eerie and cool at the same time, luckily it later cleared up! There where quite a lot of other people in the quarry (mainly people looking for minerals like Byrite and Galena) but our club headed straight to higher plateau of the quarry where some of the black Matagne Shales where with very nice Pyritized fossils and to where the waste heaps were to look for fossils. That's me looking for Brachiopods and pyritized Goniatites and Bactrites. A large Hexagonaria coral which was a little to heavy to bring home We also found some Pyrite cubes which (although very exhausting) we managed to extract

Howdy all, I did a bit of fossil hunting in Fayetteville AK over Thanksgiving, hitting the Mississippian age black shale the area is famous for, looking for goniatites and any other ammonoids or nautaloids I could find. These concretions were dug out of the lower unit shale and many of them were large, extending over 4ft in length, flat, with an oblong appearance. This was on the surface of a concretion and unfortunately was exposed to weathering and moisture. Not sure what that is. This little guy, it’s just provided for grins and not requesting an ID. It’s way too small This is the main fossil I’m concerned with ID’ing. When I broke the concretion, it split revealing a horizontal cross section of an ammonoid. I have both halves and it appears to be potentially well preserved. I’m attempting to prep it but it’s been a real struggle due the siderite that makes up most of the mineralization in these. It shines like metal when it’s cut or ground with a diamond bit making it very difficult to make out features and details. It all just looks like a shiny metallic mess. To complicate things further, many of the fossils are pyritized. I’m sticking to mineral oil only when slabbing and making large cuts. Oil causes the dust to clump and build up further obscuring things. Im also having to wear a respirator to avoid breathing this dust and it makes a nasty mess. It’s a total pain but it’s worth the hassle to get one well preserved ammonoid, even if it’s small. I’m curious if anyone has ever worked with this shale and if any tips can be provided. I’m only attempting this kind of prep once as an experiment. If it works, I’ll do the same with the other half and glue the halves back together. Im leaving enough matrix on the bottom to provide a base to stand it upright and only removing matrix from the dorsal side. I have no clue if this will work or even how much of this thing is preserved. When slabbing excess matrix off I found a second Ammonoid below it that appears completely pyritized, though less well preserved. It’s the piece on the left and the rest of it is under the fossil on the right. Note that it’s cut like a vertical cross section and not proportionally. Any assistance or info is greatly appreciated. I realize that a definitive ID may be impossible without exposing the dorsal side and it’s sutures.

    OK Pennsylvanian Goniatite

    I found this goniatite at an exposure of the Sausbee Formation (Early Pennsylvanian; Morrowian) in Oklahoma. I have tried in vain to identify it to even a genus level. I was wondering if anyone knew what this goniatite is. The only identifying mark that I could see on the fossil was a single band on the underside, as seen in the third photo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

    Mystery mark on Devonian goniatite

    The site I work most often (needmore formation in WV) produces a fair amount of what this forum has in the past generously identified for me as goniatites. I’ve noticed some with vaguely star shaped holes seemingly punched in them, although I’ve yet to have the chance to photograph one. Yesterday I came across this partial goniatite impression in situ with a really good example of what I’m talking about. Any ideas of what I’m looking at? It looks (to my amateur eyes) like something that occurred pre fossilization, and they always present just this way (overall star shaped with a penetrating circular hole in the middle, only on goniatite shells). As always thank you for your time.

  21. I will trade these fossils for one well preserved European goniatite or European triassic ammonite (specimen with 5 to 8 cm preferentially) because that kind of specimen is lack in my teaching collection. Note the Anorthopygus orbicularis is not a common species and, apart the incomplete test, has an exceptional detailed preservation, rarely seen. Best regards, Ricardo Traded
