Hi again. I have another one for you. I think I could tell if it wasn't broken! Found in green mill run. It is 1.5 inches or 3.8 cm. There is a definite ridge on one side. I tried to get a good picture of its location, the cavity seems slightly oval. Thank you again! I really appreciate you all teaching and helping me!

Hi all. I have 2 things to ask about. The longer one was found in a creek in summerville SC it is just under 1.5 inches or 3.81cm. It is smooth all around, no ridges the center hole is definitely circular. The second one was found at Green Mill Run in Greenville NC it is .75 inches or 1.9 cm. I thought is was different the way he tip is a different color then the rest. Also there is a ridge running around the tip that I can feel even where the enamel (?) Is not chipped off. Found several Great White shark teeth in the creek last weekend along with a few makos. . My best find was this Great White (2-1/2") below. It has all serrations and a complete root. Also, found one partial whale inner ear bone (periotic) and one small croc tooth. The creek was really running high and fast the day before. due to rain on Friday.

Hi. Found this digging in Green Mill Run, nc. I am sure it is bone, but it might not be a vertebrae. (Husband really wants to find a whale vert, so maybe this is a partial?) Also it has definitely turned into a rock, it is no longer light and airy like a more modern bone thanks so much!!

Hi all. I found this in green mill run in Greenville NC. I don't know what it is but since it has the same enamel look of a tooth I kept it. I hope there is enough of it there for someone to have an idea of what it is! In inches it is about 1.25 and centimeters 3.175. Thank you very much!!

Hi all. I am sure this is an easy one for you but I would like to be sure, since my guess is only a guess! I apologize that the only measuring tape I had was in inches, but i believe it is just under 35 mm. Found in the green mill run. Near the tar river in Greenville NC USA Thank you!

Hey all. I'm wondering if this fossil I found at Green Mill Run, NC is a crocodilian scute or the dental plate of a drumfish as I believe either can be found at this location.

Howdy all! I'm super excited about this and I'm looking for expertise and knowledge from all of you! I'm working in Chapel Hill, NC next week and I've paved out a day to FINALLY visit GMR!!! I'm a total noob to this area and what to expect. I've been doing research but I would humbly ask you all about your experiences, local knowledge, where to park (safely), points of entry, tools to bring (i have an good idea), areas to avoid, concerns, etc... I'm doing this alone unfortunately but that also adds to the adventure! I still haven't found my meg yet and it will be sometime before I'm able to get back out to Brownies Beach or Calvert any time soon... SO! I'm really eager to make this visit a great work out and to find some awesome treasures to share with my little boys! I wish they were old enough to come with me!

Green Mill Run, NC Trip and Some Unidentified Fossils on 8/26/2018

Hello! This is my first time posting on the forum. My family and I got into fossil hunting about a year ago. My two sons (ages five and seven) love dinosaurs just like many kids their age, so while on vacation in Florida, we made a day trip to Venice Beach to look for shark teeth. We didn't even have sifters, but we found a handful of shark teeth and were hooked! We've enjoyed making day trips to Aurora Fossil Museum in NC to "dig the past." We decided to change things up a little and explore Green Mill Run in NC. We live in Chesapeake, VA (near Virginia Beach), so Greenville is about two hours and twenty minutes away. Aurora is about two hours and forty minutes away. We brought a large shovel and a few screens. I have a couple of small hand sifters (intended for baking) that the boys can get a good handle on. We had a medium screen that we bought in Aurora and we zip-tied a pool noodle around it so it would float. This past April, we went fossil hunting in the Peace River in Florida, so hunting at Green Mill Run was similar. The water level was pretty low (a foot high or less) and there was plenty of shade so the boys could take a break from the sun. At first, I tried digging around a rock to see if any teeth were caught up in there. I would get about an average of three teeth per shovelful. It was great to be finding so many teeth like in Aurora while also keeping cool in the water! After about an hour, I decided to try moving around to different spots where I saw lots of rocks instead of sticking one place. This approach yielded even more teeth. We walked away with lots of shark teeth, squid pens (they're called pens, right?), and other fragments that seemed significant. We hunted for about two hours until the boys were ready to go and a bit hangry (I did pack a lunch...). I could have stayed all day, but they were a bit tired after the long car ride--and we still had to go back in the car to get home. It was a great first trip there and I'd love to go back! My husband was a bit worried about the possibility of snakes, but we didn't see any at all. I would definitely recommend water shoes because there was A LOT of glass in the sand. My seven-year-old son makes videos of our fossil hunting trips for his YouTube channel, which he calls Dino Study. If you want, you can watch it below. My five-year-old son doesn't like making as much of an appearance on camera, so there is a little less footage of him. The best finds included a nice, large sand tiger tooth (found by my seven-year-old) and a large great white tooth (I believe) that I found from the surface. Most of the teeth from the day. I saw this and thought it could be a molar of some kind or perhaps just a conveniently-shaped rock. I have a photo of the top and bottom.- 8 replies

My family lives in the NC mountains and we are planning on coming to the Aurora fossil festival after finding it on accident this spring....we have always hunted indian artifacts and the fossil hunting is new to us....thinking of hitting the GMR that friday on our way down...we are staying in oriental...any tips for a dad with 8 and 6 year old sons? Also any other places that we might look in? sons are dying to find a meg tooth...found 2 partials at aurora this spring....Thanks in advance and thanks for letting me join this board...we are new here

So I took a trip to GMR in Greenville, NC. Green springs park is currently closed and by the looks of it, i guess for a while. The entire creek took a beating with down trees that lay across the creek in many places. South of green springs park is still very deep, maybe 6 or 7 feet. I did manage to find access about 1/4 of a mile north of the park. This area was anywhere from ankle high to thigh deep, and I'm 6'3". I stumbled onto some pretty awesome finds as well as whale bone central, bulla's, baby intact meg teeth. For regular visitors of the creek, its going to look alot different. And from what i came across today, i plan on revisiting the spot next week. Water wasnt very cold either. Just wanted to spread the word.

Can anyone who has recently visited or lives near Green Mill Run tell me how it is at the moment? I am planning to collect some fossils from there on Saturday or Sunday for a school project, but I am somewhat concerned by the water temperature and the possibility of rain (though the forecast indicates it won't be too bad on Saturday). Would it be dangerous to go there in the rain in this season?

Hey all I was able to go out to Greenville, NC for a quick hunt this fine morning. Heres the haul Everything 2 exogyra and a oyster? That exogyra is absolutley MASSIVE some non-shark teeth Huge and reaaaallly old sperm whale tooth root. First whale tooth fish tilly bone Fish tooth. Could someone ID? Mosasaur tooth. My first mosasaur tooth too Belemnites Shark teeth Some good ones Great whites My first meg that still has serrations Nice big crow shark Two nice Hastilis tiger shark teeth are very rare in that layer Whale bone Ear bone Was a very good day, this was a result of only around 3 hours

First time at GMR, didn't find the whale tooth or vertebrae that I wanted to find, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! Was away from my vehicle for four hours. Was not prepared for all of the glass though! Curious if anyone can identify anything in the last two pictures. The small piece isn't supposed to be in that. I'm not sure if the black thing is anything, I just thought it had an unusual pattern.

I went over to Green Mill Run creek in NC today and did some fossil hunting and found some nice stuff. I'm curious to find out what type of shark this may have been from? Great White? Tiger? Thanks in advance for any help.

I made a trip over to Green Mill Run in NC this past weekend to look for fossils in the creek. My son and I had a wonderful time and found some great sharks teeth and other stuff. I'm stuck though on trying to identify this tooth. It does not look like any of the other teeth that I have found in the creek. Could it be a land mammal tooth? Thanks in advance for any ideas that you may have.

Forgive me if I am posting in the wrong section. But I have been to Green Mill Run once last year, and am looking to go this week. I am on vacation in North Carolina but a couple hours away. There has been quite a bit of rain which I know can make Green Mill Run unavailable to Fossil hunting. I could not find a way to determine what the water level might be like, and I don't know how fast the creek empties from water after rains. By any chance if anyone that lives in the area familiar with this location could give me a heads up if it's worth my drive there to Fossil hunt with my nine-year-old son and family that would be awesome. If not we might just make the drive and peek into the creek, but if it's not available we would rather go to the Natural History Museum in Raleigh I guess. Thank you very much for anyone that could help, I know it's short notice but if we get there I will certainly post a report!

Hello Everyone! I've just recently relocated to Greenville from Charlotte in the last month and have always had an interest in fossils/shark teeth etc but never got into in any deeper than skimming the beach. I went out to Aurora and had a great time digging through the piles and learning a little about the geological history of the area. I just found out that green mill run is a destination for fossils and it's minutes from my house, I literally have been biking by it multiple times a day since moving here. I'm willing to just jump right in on getting out there but wanted to put a call out to any regulars if anyone was going out and would be open to me tagging along. I've been spending too much time on a computer so dirty hard work sounds refreshing at this point. Thanks!

Heading to Green Mill Run in NC, looking for information.

I am planning to head over to Green Mill Run in North Carolina this coming weekend (6/16/18) to do some hunting. I have done a little research but haven't come across too much. I know there are lots of shark teeth, as well cretaceous, paleogene, and neogene fossils. I was curious if anyone has been, and if so what some of the hot spots might be. Not sure if I should head closer to the main river, or stay within the smaller channels to search. Will probably do some visual hunting as well as sifting. Any information would be greatly appreciated! -
Good morning everyone! I have another interesting fossil that I've been researching to identify and I'm stumped. My first thought was turtle but I can't seem to match the part to anything in the anatomy. I apologize for no scale in the photo but it's 2.5" long and just over 1" wide at its widest point. Thanks for the info!! In addition, this came directly from the green clay/quartz layer.

Spent most of the day Saturday in the water at Green Mill Run. There were soo many small teeth to be had under .25". Some super nice smalls. Found some meg chunks. The highlight for my daughter was finding the 1.5" great white. Exhausting, but good day!
