Prepping trilobites but not being able to use air tools
Jurassicz1 posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
So i got alot of trilobites that i would like to prep. But i only have a dremel and hand tools. But i dont think a dremel would be good for trilobites. Most of them are in limestone from sweden. Mostly kinnekulle. Im scared of doing damage to the trilobites with hand tools. As i cant get air tools. I have sharp nail vises and a exacto knife and a optivisor. Also the matrix can sometimes be soft and easy to prep and sometimes it can be super hard -
So i prep with dental picks and pin vises and i actually like it. I have more control while prepping. But how far can you get with hand tools? I have read when prepping with hand tools that the fossils get really damaged. I have not noticed it at all. I am prepping a trilo and it goes well. Really well. should i keep prepping with hand tools? And can it make amazing preps?

So... This specimen is currently in ID- section here, but since it doesnt have any suggestions, I figured out that I should try to get some more features to help IDing. This is from northern Germany. I found this little stone and after a while, I decided to smash this into another rock. It kinda worked and this is what was in there. The fossil itself is quite fragile, and I accidentally managed to swipe lots of the material away from the other half. That was poor handling from my part.. :S I must say that Im quite inexperienced (only "re-prepped" one Otodus tooth which had some features under rock. Turned out to be quite fine fore first "prep" IMO). I have magnifiers, dental tools, glues etc for basic working but no powertools bc I live in an apartment building. Not saying that I would use any powertools for this. How would you guys deal with this, or is this something I shouldnt try to tackle?
