  1. Hi everyone, A few months back I went on a fossil hunt with the BVP to a clay quarry with some miocene sands in Kruibeke (Antwerp, Belgium) in search for shark teeth. Some great finds were done that day by other members, like a big Megalodon tooth, some large Hastalis & Galeocerdo teeth, a couple of Somniosus microcephalus teeth, an Edaphodon antwerpiensis palate and a Neolithic tool to name a few of the best... Unfortunately we weren't that lucky as we found only a few smaller teeth, but I was happy with the finds nonetheless First up some on situ photo's which were shared on the fb page of the club (luckily cause I didn't take any) First up my personal best find of the day: A small pleistocene rodent incisor Some bivalves (Venus casina casina?) A ray dermal denticle Some ray teeth (Aetobatus sp.?) The only two larger shark teeth we found, both C. hastalis I believe

    Mako shark teeth

    Tailgate show finds. as tagged. Species Carcharodon hastalis (Isurus) hastalis Extinct Mako Shark Miocene-Pliocene (~2.6 to 15 million years) Hawthorne Formation Beaufort County, South Carolina my added if correct. I would like more information such as upper or lower and which side is showing. Is this an extinct great white shark and type? large 1 3/8th in. long small 1 1/16th inch This is a 1 3/8th inch long, nicely colored tooth of Isurus hastalis, an extinct giant mako shark.

    Aurora Dig Pit Fossils

    Soooo a few days ago new material was dumped at the Aurora Fossil Museum. Well, I made the trip there before the Saturday crowds, and was well rewarded!!! These were the best finds of the day =p btw the stuff underneath the shark verts are 2 stingray spines, a filefish vert, a burrfish bone, a beat up dolphin jaw bone, and what I think is some type of fish skull cap

    Calvert Cliffs trip 1

    Took my first trip out to Calvert cliffs state park this weekend. Got there as early as I could, which started me at high tide. Beach loaded up with people throughout the day. And from what I saw, nobody else found any teeth. So I consider myself lucky with the hastalis I found. The roots were just barely showing, I think a wave may have just uncovered them. It was a long day round trip from NY but worth it. Also found some scallops.

    Cosmopolitodus hastalis - Bite mark?

    I have a 2.96" Cosmopolitodus hastalis from Beaufort County, South Carolina. It has a cut across the root. It looks similar to bite marks I've seen, however those have been on parts of the tooth that make sense like the blade. Is this a bite mark? If so, how would it get on the root? Best, Bellamy

    PB Hastalis

    Howdy all! Went fishing last night and because it was so rubbish I went fossiling instead! Handy when both of your hobbies take place on the same bit of beach! Strong South East winds had built the sea up coupled with a big ish tide and the cliffs were taking a pounding! Perfect for teethies! However, as perfect as it looked, the teeth didn’t want to play ball. The pick of the bunch was a 61mm C.Hastalis which is the biggest I’ve found or seen from Suffolk or even England. Has some lovely lighting strikes patina markings on it which is typical of teeth from the red crag formation. Rest of the teeth consisted of mainly smaller makos but nothing amazing. No photos of the cliffs, it was pouring with rain and pitch black. So here is a photo of the location in much nicer weather. Thanks for reading everyone!!

    First Meg

    We recently were able to take a trip to the Miocene of Virginia along the Potomac River. We weren't sure what the conditions would be, as the last time we were here the tide was extremely high limiting the length of the beach and how much was accessible. When we got to the beach we could tell it would be a good day, the tide was pretty low with still a couple hours to go before low tide, and we could see long stretches of beach in both directions. As we walked I wasn't having to much luck, but my wife who trailed behind me was finding some good sized hastalis teeth that I had missed. Once we got to a better section of the beach with cobble and larger rocks, we really started to take our time searching. In about ankle deep water I looked down and spotted a 4 7/8 inch halved meg, I couldn't believe it! By far the biggest and most complete meg I had ever found up to this point (Previously have only found very worn bits and pieces of megs). We kept searching and stopped to talk for a bit and when I looked down I saw another very worn meg sticking almost fully out of some fallen clay matrix. We were both happy with the day so far! Between two partial megs and a good number of hemi's and nice hastalis, it was definitely one of our more productive days. We reached the end of the accessible beach and decided to head back. On the way back, I was searching up along the higher parts of the shore and saw a small clay block with some black sticking out and picked it up. Looking at it I thought it was just some lignite, but decided to look a bit closer. I picked at it a bit and it ended up being a meg! My first complete and whole meg, I was extremely happy with the find and could finally check that off my list. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better day weather or finds wise. For teeth we ended up with a good haul of hastalis, hemis, two partial and one whole megs, and a retroflexus.The plate pictured has on it a whale vert, epiphysis, and various shark or fish verts,
  13. I have here an alleged Carcharodon hastalis from Chile. It is 1.85" long and 1.12" wide. After receiving the tooth, it looked a lot more like Isurus planus to me. The other party insists it's Carcharodon hastalis. At the very least, they insist it comes from Chile. To the best of my knowledge, Isurus planus isn't found in Chile. I've never heard of it anyway. Two questions, then. Is this Hastalis or Planus? And if it is Planus, might it be Chilean? Thank you, Bellamy
  14. We have our Secret Santa package all ready to go and just got done organizing our loose shark teeth. I found a bunch of STH material that I had set aside for a trade that never materialized. I totally forgot I had them so here they are. This is a package deal, I don’t want to split them up. Saves on shipping. This would make a cool Christmas gift for somebody and we aren’t asking much in return. Sharks- Carcharodon hastalis, Carcharodon planus, Galeocerdo, Physogaleus, Carcharhinus, Triakis, Galeorhinus, Mustelus, Sphyrna, Cetorhinus, Heterodontus, Squalus, Squatina, Batoids- Myliobatis, Dasyatis, Mobula, verts, denticles, partial stingray barb. None of the teeth are large. I believe the largest hastalis and planus are 1.5”. Very nice array of colors though. With Christmas around the corner, we’ll throw in some Cretaceous teeth from Russia too. My primary interest would be Heterodontus, Isurus (desori, oxyrinchus, retroflexus ) , scyliorhinus and other cstsharks but I’m open to any shark teeth except Moroccan stuff.   15. Hello. I was wondering if anyone could help me with some fossil identifications. Thanks for any help. First, here is a Green River formation fish plate. I know the fish are Knightia, but I don't know how to differentiate the species. I think they are Knightia eocaena. Can anyone confirm the species? Thanks. Next, here is a shark tooth I found while digging on the Ernst ranch in Bakersfield, California. It is either Carcharodon hastalis or Isurus desori. I'm not great at telling the two apart. Can anyone confirm the species? Thanks. Last, here is an ammonite I received from caldigger. He identified it as Aioloceras besiaiei. I think the species might have been misspelled and is supposed to be besairiei. I've seen these sometimes referred to as Cleoniceras. Does anyone know the difference between Aioloceras and Cleoniceras? Thanks.

    Shark Teeth - Maryland

    Hi everyone, I'm buying some shark teeth from someone who hunted a bunch of them in Maryland - I would assume Calvert Cliffs. I'm looking for Isurus oxyrinchus - short-finned mako. Could anyone please confirm if 30 in this image is Isurus oxyrinchus? For reference, each square is 1.5" x 1.5". Also, is anyone able to identify 40? I would say Snaggletooth, but it doesn't appear to be serrated.
  17. We know that fossils are not the priority for people at the moment. They are not for us either but I have found a good amount of stress relief in going through a large donation we got. The material is all from STH and we have enough to make a trade. It was part of the donation actually. Extra fossils for sale or for trade to improve our collection. I would like to avoid sales or doing smaller trades just for shipping reasons so I decided to put the trade stuff out as one lot. Given the current state of the world, consider this a post corona virus trade offer. We would probably not ship for 2-4 weeks if not a bit longer so we would not expect immediate shipping. Nobody needs to risk a trip to the post office. I did however want to put it out there. I think a little engagement among fossil nerds may be a good thing at this time We tried to put together a pretty decent representation of the shark and ray fauna plus a variety of colors.   18. Last saturday I went on my 2nd fossilhunt to the "Wienerberger quarry" in Rumst (Belgium) with my girlfriend and the BVP, my fossil club. This quarry is only accessible for fossil collections during official excursions organised by fossils clubs. The quarry existed out of multiple layers, the oldest was a oligocene clay layer dating back to the Rupelian (named for the region) around 33.90 - 20.10 mya, although I didn't hunt in that layer, some of the finds that could be done there were bivalves, gastropods and brachiopods. The layer where most people hunted was a very thin miocene layer dating back probably to the Burdigalian around 20.43 - 15.97 mya. The most common finds here were multiple species of shark teeth and some marine mammal fossils. And then there was another layer were it was possible to find Pleistocene fossils dating back to the last ice age, but the chances of finding anything there was quite slim. So me & my girlfriend and most of the other fellow fossil hunters mostly hunted in the miocene layer in search for fossil shark teeth. Everyone digging for and sieving through that thin layer full of miocene shark teeth Me looking for some teeth My girlfriend looking for some teeth And while we were digging for the layer like everyone else, the finds were a bit meager at first, not just for us but for everyone. But then my girlfriend found a tooth a bit lower on the hill and we started scraping away the top layer of sand. Turns out that some previous land slides washed the best material down hill, lower than were the rest was hunting and so the spoils started coming. We found most material there including our best find, a 6,5 cm long C. hastalis tooth found by my girlfriend and a partial marine mammal vert found by me! I believe our hastalis tooth was the 2nd largest tooth found that day, only a megalodon found during the trip was bigger. As the day was drawing to an end and our spot was becoming depleted of fossils we took a walk around the quarry to look for a new spot only to return to our old spot to start digging towards the miocene layer again. But this time a little bit more to the right. We found a few nice shark teeth while doing this and a lot of iron concretions but but much else. Only during the last few minutes of the trip I did hit something that wasn't a concretion. After some digging it turned out to be a piece of wooly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) which ended up a little bit above the miocene layers during a previous land slide.
  19. Hi everyone, saturday I went on my 2nd fossil hunting trip with my fossil club to the Wienerberger quarry in Rumst in the Rupel area near Antwerp (Belgium). We hunted mainly in a thin Miocene layer dating back to the Burdigalian around 20.43 - 15.97 million years ago. We found many shark teeth, most of which are C. hastalis, but there are a few I can't quite identify as shark teeth are not really my area of expertise and I was not acquainted with the location until my visit. So I was hoping some experts could me out or someone who is familiar with the species from the location. I did send an email to one of the excursion leaders from the trip, but he admitted not being a sharkteeth expert himself either and couldn't help me much further with ID's. So any help would be welcome. So the first batch of teeth are what I all believe to be C. hastalis. I am pretty confident with my ID on them but the other teeth are a mystery for me. These two teeth are pretty beaten up. The tooth on the right has no enamel layer anymore and I doubt an ID is impossible. But the tooth on the right could be beat-up C. hastalis but I am not sure, it also kinda looks like a pretty beat-up Carcharocles angustidens. The latter can be found at the location and are usually found in the bad condition due to the fact that they were present in a now lost layer a little bit older than the one were most shark teeth were. But as said before I am not an expert and I am just purely speculating with the little info on the location I have. I don't really know how to ID these teeth. Are they C. hastalis but located on different locations in the jaws than the previous C. hastalis teeth or do these belong to a different species? Then there are these 3 teeth that I don't know how to ID We also found a few small shark teeth of which I believe they might belong to a different species than C. hastalis And then the last tooth is this one, on first sight it kinda looks like a C. hastalis tooth but when you take a closer look you can see that the edges are serrated. So I wonder whether anyone know what species this could be? Well that were all, I would really appreciate some help for their ID's Thank you in advance!

    Fossil Hunt 6/22/19

    It's been a long while since I was able to fossil hunt. To go out today with a decent haul really made it rewarding. The location was on a private beach, and the weather was perfect. A bit of wind, around 78-80, warm water, and clear skies made the beach beautiful. We hunted for around two hours on the South side with minimal rewards, some really small teeth such as hemis, makos, and the like. The hunting started to pick up when we made our way over to the North Side. As soon as we arrived, a hemi around 1 1/6 washed up. I knew I was going to like this beach when a second only a little smaller washed up after a minute of hunting. We worked the beach for another hour, pulling a mako of around 1 1/4 inches (broken root) from the surf, and then another, really nice 1 inch mako in the same spot. We met a certain Steve Grossman on the beach, who invited me to the Calvert Marine Museum's sharkfest to help him set up, talk about, and look at his hundreds of megs.   21. I got this tooth and didn’t realize it had restoration done to the tip. I don’t collect restored teeth so am offering it up for trade for other shark teeth. Let me know what you have, I’m open to offers. Especially interested in (but not limited to) Cretaceous teeth.
  22. This was a prep I've last year, but for some reason I've never posted it on the forum. So I thought I might change that. Last year I was fortunate enough to take a visit to the Ernst Quarries and dig for some shark teeth. Although most of the fossil I've taken home are either bones, four partial regular-sized teeth, and mostly tiny partials (some of which I accidentally damaged while digging ), the biggest find of the day was this large Cosmopolitodus hastalis tooth with its crown partially sticking out of the matrix. When Rob noticed the tooth, he initially estimated it to be ~2 inches long and insisted that I keep the tooth in the matrix, saying something like "The tooth itself is worth about $15. If you keep the tooth in the matrix, it'll be worth $60". Although my reason for visiting the Ernst Quarries was to find shark teeth to keep rather than to sell, I for some reason decided to keep the tooth in the matrix. However, I still had to prep this baby when I got home! Below is the tooth how I found it. This was going to be my first (and so far only considerate) prep I've ever done. Rob told me that the matrix can easily be scratched away using a fingernail and so taking his words and some advice I've gotten from the forum regarding something else, I grabbed one of my mom's needles and started quite literally digging off the siltstone. After around 10 minutes, a perfect root base showed up. This tooth is obviously going to be a perfect whole, so you just gotta keep scraping off the matrix. One really helpful thing I've realized at this point is that the needle I was using was perfect for such beginner's prep- it was strong enough to remove matrix effectively but not enough to do any damage to the tooth itself.
  23. I've recently was lucky to have found an online copy of Purdy et al. (2001)'s paper on Lee Creek sharks, and I've found a passage that caught my interest- "In morphology, the teeth lsurus hastalis (Figure 27) are almost identical to those from large individuals (TL=3.7-4.3 m) I. paucus. The tips of the upper anterior teeth of the latter species, however (TL=2.3^1.2 m, n=9), usually lack the labial recurvature that is so well developed in I. hastalis (Figure 28a). In the small number of I. paucus dentitions available to us (n=9), only one dentition (Hubbell collection, JF91980, 2.6 m TL, female) had upper anterior teeth with tips that exhibited a strong labial recurvature. At present, we do not know how common this recurvature is in the extant species. The upper anterior teeth of Leriche's (1910:275-280, figs. 78-86, pi. 16: figs. 16-31) sample of teeth from the Oligocène of Belgium, which he identified as Oxyrhina desori and O. desori flandrica, are identical to those of the extant Isurus paucus. They lack a labial recurvature. This suggests that I. paucus may be a junior synonym of I. hastalis, but because of the small number of dentitions available of I. paucus, we hesitate in synonymizing the two species. " Traditionally, I think people believed that I. paucus evolved from Isurus retroflexus. Capetta (2012) now describes retroflexus in the genus Anotodus as an alopiid with later authors following suit, making it unlikely to have any relation with the longfin mako and making the lineage of paucus unclear. Of the few papers and articles I've read that mention Purdy et al. (2001)'s observation and its possibilities, none give an actual opinion or response to it and simply mention it without anything else, which sort of makes me feel like this observation could be a legitimate possibility. So I really want to know the opinion any of you shark experts and enthusiasts out there on this topic. What do you guys think?
