Ik know this isn't a fossil but i thought people probably have experience with pyrite here so i though i'd give it a shot. I've had this piece for a year or so and as you can see it's corroding pretty bad on top, is there a way of stopping the corrosion once it has begun? If not i'll try to cut off the bottom half so that that might survive.

I messed up, how to clean off Potassium hydroxide

Hey everyone, I recently got gifted some potassium hydroxide in order to help clean up fossils. I tried it on a few smaller fossils which i was not too fond of to see how it worked and it had good results. After i got a bit more confident with it a tried it on one of fossils i've had for a long time and liked a lot but never was able to clean with the tools i had. So long story short i applied it, it chew through a bunch of the fossil itself leaving it worse off. After cleaning it off i noticed it was covered in a white substance i was unable to get off even with an hour of furious scrubbing. Is there anyway to minimale the damage to this piece, and how to i get rid of this white substance? Thank you for your help!

A little perplexed on this one. I’m guessing ghost shrimp claw perhaps? Found near Ramenessin while sifting. Tooth of some sort maybe? I’m open to options but for now thinking claw.

I have recently recived a fossil fish (Probably a knightia) from the Green River formation. I am inexperienced with these fossils and have no idea how to prepare them. If someone could give me advice it would be greatly appreciated. The Fossil Outline My tools (The tool on the left is an electric engraver with air scribe tips, I have 2 fine tips and 1 chisel tip)

I found this on the ground near the cabin I was staying at near black mountain North Carolina I think it is either antler or bone but not really sure I kinda want to turn it into a ring to wear cause it would look really amazing but I'm not sure what it is and if it even has any value or not so any and all help would be appreciated thanks and God bless

Thank you for your time and the ad to the community,I'm definitely a rookie,I live in Arkansas..really in the middle of nowhere,which is great because I get to explore alot of untouched land,overhangs,caves,ect..I found this in a cave that was full of bones and alot of native American artifacts ..I've tried to do my own research on it but I definitely need help..I also have other very interesting finds I would like to post after this. Thank you for your guys help and time .truly appreciated... Scott C

Hi there, I found these two fish fossils. I've never owned any before, so I'm just starting to learn about them. I don't even know how to begin to figure out who these fish were, and where they're from. Hoping you can help me. I know nothing :/ The shorter on has a little piece of fabric glued on the bottom that looks like it's been there for a long time. Allows you to prop up. Looking forward to hearing from enthusiasts, experts They look like pike or pickerel to me, but I doubt I'm in any way close to right! Thanks in advance, phonegirl

i received few minerals(sometimes sliced and polished) from a old collection mixed with fossils,mostly without name and location some are very easy to ID (I think),but i know nothing about minerals,if somebody could help?It would be very happy,regards

Soo I've been digging and finding bone in different areas along w buried deep charcoal and or black thin stone. Most rocks I let sit on a shelf but this one has been bugging me and has me stumped and YES I LICKED IT gross and it was slightly sticky. I've honestly not a clue and the pattern on parts of it has truly just thrown me for a loop. Any help appreciated. USA/VA

Hi All! Any advice on getting permission to explore a quarry? I’m trying to plan out some trips into the field for later in the fall or next spring if I can get some time off. My top pick by distance and what I’ve heard people talk about here are the Geer Road/Deep Springs Road Quarry. Does anyone know who could be contacted about permission to look for critters for an afternoon there? Thanks! Noah

So i got some display cabinets but i'm not sure how to display it. I have many bought fossils and found. I got shark teeth mostly, But also amber, Fish, Dino, Reptiles and more. So i wonder how you guys display your fossils? Maybe post some pictures? So i can get some inspiration.

We actually found this about 1.5 years ago, just before moving to Florida. (Moved here a year ago). My son got it while he was at my parent's house in the outskirts of east DFW (we lived in north DFW, they lived in east DFW - we both relocated to FL). Their area was well known for dinosaur bones and the likes, which is super crazy lol!! Common to dig them up in yards while doing fences and whatnot. Anyway - my stepdad took my son to the cul-de-sac (2 houses down), one day where they were starting to build more houses. Kiddo wanted to check out the dirt & rock piles... He ended finding this. It's a 14 inch wide ammonite 4 inches tall. Haven't weighed. (carried it home himself, when he was 9 lol). Sorry, it's totally uncleaned, besides light brushing... because we haven't known what to do... Weren't sure if you treat it like shells with light bleach water or if that will destroy it?! Help, please, and thank you! I'm on mobile, so can't follow all the photo protocol ATM. As such, only posting 2 photos for now so it doesn't bog down browsers when opening. I'll optimize in a in a bit when I'm on PC. (Not sure that there's many more to post right now anyway, although I'm happy to).

Hello, I have found a fossil site referenced not too far from my home. The paper even gives the map coordinates. Trouble is, pasting the coordinates I have into Google Maps brings up zero results. So, I realised google maps replaces the degrees sign with a period. But inputting it in that way brings up a location around 80 miles south of where it is meant to be. If anyone can help me know where I am going wrong, or have a look at the coordinates and pop a pic of its location on a map, I would really appreciate it. Here are the coordinates given: 24°57’32.82’’N, 121°22’50.75’’E Site is meant to be in Shulin. If anyone can help, that would be awesome. Edit: There are also these coordinates of a site very close--unfossilferous, but it was studied. So if this one is of help, it is only about 30 meters awya from the one with fossils: 24°57’37.27’’N, 121°23’00.75’’E Nothing is showing up on Google maps, so I wonder if the coordinates are a different format?

A friend just sent me these pics so I apologize in advance for not providing scale. I was told it's almost 1 3/4 inches long. It was found in Michigan on the shore of Lake Huron. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently searching different teeth pictures online so if I figure it I'll post it. Thank you.

I already asked about this rock in some fossil forum but yet it remains unidentified. I have my own guesses but in reality I don't have a clue about fossilized things. I found it in Germany Bavaria, the stone is shelly limestone and the egg like mold is about 1 cm in length and wide. I would be glad if someone of you can identify it :)

Helotes, Tx Part of this shell was sticking out of a chunk of sediment. I used a water pick to clear the rest of it. In trying to determine what kind of shell it is, I’ve found several that are similar, but none with the shell spiral as tight. The closest thing that I could find is below. This doesn’t seem correct considering my location. Placostylus porphyrostomus is a species of large air-breathing land snail, a pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Bothriembryontidae. This species is endemic to New Caledonia.
