Hi all, Would be really grateful if anybody could help identify this fossil. The piece was found in South East England. Unfortunately the provenance is a bit murky but I believe it was claimed to have been found on a beach. Attached a series of (compressed sized) pictures showing the specimen from several angles with international scale

Question about Shale, potentially newer (pleistocene), glacial, or Devonian
jwestbury posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hello, NW Indiana here. They were doing some digging and in the sandy glacial deposit ish layers, I was finding some heavier sandstone conglomerates with Devonian era fossils(crinoids, shells etc) , and I also found some shales, they appear to be newer but I’m not 100% sure. Most are pretty flakey, haven’t found anything fossil wise inside (that could indicate a time frame better) but one of them did have a strange triangular shape inside. My question is, is it possible for other rocks to be in this type of shale? And that is just potentially what it is? Is it potentially something else? I broke it in half, (by hand, easily lol) and it’s a pretty well defined almost triangle. Not sure if it’s just a simple rock, or potential for fossil or artifact. Thanks! Jessica TLDR- can you find weathered triangular rocks with in shale, or maybe it is just shale forming around itself? Could it possibly be an artifact, fossil? Suggestions and comments are welcome. I’m not having much luck finding a lot about shale when looking online. Thanks! :) Ps-I should also mention, this was part of a larger, more jagged piece of shale, and I had broke some pieces off around the outside, pretty cleanly, to get this triangle to come out… I’ll put a picture of that in the comments. -
Hi! Basically the title! Going on a hunt soon and was wondering where along the Potomac I should go to hunt? Any parks, etc? thanks!

I am a rock lover I will admit I don't know a lot about identifying fossils but I think that's what this is. Can anyone tell me what it is? I put it on the big burner of the stove for size reference.

Please help me come up with ideas for a paleontology project
Daniel Fischer posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hello fellow paleontology nerds, I would like to get some help coming up with ideas for a paleontology project. I am learning in a special class in school where we learn electronics, coding and biology. I am now in 11th grade and we are starting to work on our finale project. The project needs to include electronics and coding and it also has to be a solution to some kind of a problem in the world. We have a bunch of teachers to help us, a ton of electronic parts(sensors, resistors, cables, whatever we want as long as it's not too expensive) , 3D printers to use and over a year to work on it. It's a big deal and there are a lot of possibilitys. This is the part where I need your help. I decided I want to create my project in the field of paleontology because I am very intrested in paleontology and the only thing that ever annoyed me about it is that I could only learn things but never put my knowledge to use so I guess this is my chance. My original idea was to make a small range GPR to help with fossil prep but the parts to build an accurate GPR were too expensive so I need a new idea. Since the people here are some of the most skilled and knowledgeable people in the field I figured you might have some paleo-problems for me to try and solve and maybe even ideas for solutions. So thank you for reading this far and if you have any problem or ideas for me please drop them in the comments;) -
I'm hoping someone can help me troubleshoot my CP 9361 air scribe. I'm copying my same post from Facebook in hopes to get more visibility. The main issue is that once the stylus touches rock, the stylus jams, or simply stops working. When changing the dial for air from 0 to 5, settings 0-3 blow out little to no air. Setting 4 blows out much air. Setting 5 blows out little to no air. If I turn the dial slowly, sometimes the stylus will engage Sometimes I have to bang the casing on something (either the palm of my hand or the leg of a table) to get it to start again I've cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and lubricated with 3-in-1 machine oil If I have just 1 O-ring on the stylus it will work for a few moments. If I have 2 O-rings on it, the stylus will never vibrate / engage. Do I need to just buy a new air scribe? I’ve got multiple pieces of wood, some with original bark, as peat with remenants of stuff in, that is all around 4,500-6,000 years old from an ancient forest, but now that it’s come out of the sea will it just rot like normal? What would be the best way to preserve it?

Our mammoth tusk fell off its pedestal and broke apart. It’s a complex break, so I don’t feel confident trying to do it myself. Is there a reputable fossil repair shop I can hire to fix it?

Any ideas what this could be? Not sure where it was found as a bunch of fossils were chucked out of a university department in the 70s and this is one of them, some fossilised horn or a coral?

I went to St Leon Indiana, and I had a pretty good haul!!! Spent the day out there I have several fossils that are from the Ordovician time period and they’re in limestone, limestone shale. Does anyone have any good tips on washing them? Do you prefer dry? Just with a brush? What about any rusted stuff, do you use oxalic oxide? What about algae? Do you prefer water? Soap and water? Hydrogen peroxide? I’m afraid and don’t want to ruin any. Thank you! Jessica

Hi there everyone. I would really appreciate your skills/opinions about if my little ''treasure'' is actually a coprolite or not. I have always believed it to be, just because it looks like a poo with something in it to me. I have forgotten where i found it, but most likely it was in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. It is ovalish in shape and appears to have a ''skin' wrapped around some sort of internal content. As I know zero about fossils, your time and expertise is gratefully appreciated. Looking forward to hearing from someone with excitement and thanks. Photos hopefully attached! Many cheers, Kazza

I have a couple places I have been searching. One in a Mangrove Forest, the others in Construction yards. I am finding some nicely colored Sharks teeth, and one was so encrusted with junk it took hours with several types of sand paper to polish. The very dark brown complete one on the bottom left. It is really a beautiful tooth, but I need to polish it further to get the Enamel a bit less opaque. Any methods for polishing by hand? There are other assorted pieces as well, some nice small black teeth from construction sites, the brown and orange are from the Tannins in the Mangrove Swamps The Brown stuff I find right on the surface in ancient lagoons which have dried up and the wind has blown away the top soil, but its a slog and a hike to get to them! (Or boat/kayak). i have been wondering if I dig and excavate a little if Id find better preserved teeth under the surface. The smal half of a meg that is black next to the quarter I just randomly stuck the shovel in the dirt up higher in the scrub away from the water and it just fell out about 4 inches down. I wish I had a better understanding of where the Fossil Layers are, and how to where to dig a bit better. I had apparently been digging at the construction sites in the wrong spots for months, some older dude saw me and showed me that I need to look in the grey layer, not the yellow sandy layer below it. He didnt have to help me, but I appreciated it none the less! I am not getting skunked usually so thats good. do you guys know of any textbooks that discuss in great detail (academic level) the geology of SW Florida? I have the Mark Rentz books and they give a highschool, surface level detail about fossiling. just wanted to post an update on my fossiling adventures lately!

Hey all! I found this at Caspersen (FL) and have no idea what it is. It’s about an inch and a half. Hoping you all can educate me! Thanks! IMG_4601.MOV

I found this bone in a creek in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I have asked some hunters and farmers what it could be but nobody seems to know. It appears old but modern. There looks to be a suture mark or perhaps an old fracture or some pathology. I would appreciate any insight into what bone this may be. Or where I might look to find something to compare? Thank you.

Hi, it would be nice if I could get some opinions on this grallator footprint I purchased as I don’t know anything about this kind of stuff and how to spot if it’s fake, and another thing I’m confused about, if u flip it over there’s another footprint on the other side but it doesn’t match with the over one?
