I was assigned a project on the culture of Micronesia for my AP world history class, so I decided to build a tebutje (shark sword) to show the traditional warfare techniques of the region........ I had a lot of fun with this, and it was a good way to use some of the extra shark teeth I had in my collection! I attached a section of video I used for the project that shows the building and trial of my tebutje, I hope you have some fun with it too! * I may have mis-IDed some of the shark's teeth, my history teacher doesn't know much about sharks...so I'm good on that end. if you see a mis-IDed tooth, let me know! a photo of the final design:

Paleo Service Hours for Prospective College Students
Uncle Siphuncle posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
When I went to college 30 years ago, we didn't have to present a history of volunteer work or public service to be accepted into a university of choice. Fast forward to today, and things are much more competitive not only academically, but also service-wise. My son is a 17 year old junior and we are in the middle of SAT prep, visiting universities, applying for scholarships, and investigating volunteer/service options. Then it dawned on me that Weston's years of helping me guide other private collectors and academic staff (for free of course), as well as collecting with family and making periodic, downsizing donations to area schools, clubs and institutions could all be brought back into play at this critical time in his life, both for what he's done already, as well as what he can do going forward.- 13 replies

Hello all, Next year, the last year of high school for me, we have to write an essay of over 100 pages. It has to be about science and because it has to count so many pages, we have to choose something that we like, in my case fossils. Now I don't know what specific topic I should choose? I have a couple of ideas, but they all have pros and cons. Could you guys help me out? First idea: - titel: Fauna and flora of the Maastrichtian of the Hell Creek Formation. - pros: I think this should be possible to write 100 pages? There are many animals described from this formation. -cons: We can't just use photos from the internet without permission of the owner, and because I only have one Hell Creek tooth, It will be hard to get nice pictures. I also have trouble to find scientific papers and pictures of them. Second Idea: - Titel: The Kem Kem beds: a view in the Cenomanian of Morocco -pros: I have already a couple of fossils from this area, and they aren't too high priced if I need some more. -Cons: Would It be possible to write 100 pages? Many fossils can't be identified properly due lack of research. Any other Ideas would be also great. I prefer vertebrates because fossils like trilobites are not even known by my teachers. Thanks already.

As many of you are aware, Singapore is a country that does not yield fossil sites, nor do we have a strong geological heritage or much government/state support. However, that should not prevent our youth from learning about the rich culture and wonders of fossils, Earth's ancient history or paleontology! Our group of fossil-collectors recently partnered with a well-known school, National Junior College and held a lecture for a group of 80 high school students' science day. We started off with short video showing scenes from Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure. Seeing a mosasaur chomp up a shark sure got the students' attention! The lecture organizer Calvin leads the talk. Seeing the looks of amazement on the children's faces make this all worthwhile!
