I'm trying to find new fossil hunting sites. I know that hogtown creek in Gainesville has some areas where you can find small megs and horse teeth, but I am not sure what parts of the creek they are in. The only area in hogtown I have been too has only centimeter or less long teeth, though there are hundreds. Does anybody mind sharing any sites in hogtown or just in Gainesville in general. Feel free to PM me or tell me what forum I should have put this in (I know it's probably not this one) thanks!

I just looked at a post that I did almost 1 year ago about Hogtown Creek in Gainesville and this post is almost exactly the same. It was a quick visit to Alfred Ring Park, about 45 minutes, and again I only found some miscellaneous bone pieces, Ray and shark teeth. The temp was hot, 86 degrees, and the water was cool- it made for a great time. On the way out, I ran into what I believe is an endangered 4 1/2 foot Florida Pine Snake, who was in exceptional shape. After a brief discussion with him, he went on his way and so did I. Here are some pics of the area, the snake and my finds.

Any ideas on what type of tooth this is? Found it in Hogtown creek in Gainesville, FL. Looks like some type of canine tooth.

Well this is really going to be a picture heavy, ID lacking, report on various areas that I visited on the way down and back from Sanibel Island, Florida.I just don't have the time to flesh this report out, but I wanted to show some of the "smalls" that I collected. When it comes to the shells from Florida, the pics are only a representative view of some of the different species that I collected, and I collected a lot. To be honest with you, I am finding the collecting of fossil shells more fun that any other fossils that I collect. My first stop, was one that I posted earlier, but will show the pic of my finds. This evening I made a very quick stop at the Alfred Ring Park in Gainesville, Florida to do about 20 minutes of collecting in the Hogtown Creek. I did not find much of anything ( bone fragments, small turtle shell portion and ray and shark teeth), but it was fun. Below are a few pics of the area and my finds.

No work today so decided to have some fun & at least cross this off my list. Being same age as Peace River/creeks (mid mio- possibly early plio) & hearing some hype about it, knew it couldn't be too shabby.. Very very shallow, like about a foot or 2 of water on average (most digging/sifting done on my knees). Surprising for a long creek. Seeing gravel on some of the banks, gut feeling I wouldn't have too hard a time finding rocks and indeed didn't for most of the spots I hit. Mostly smaller stuff, might be bigger gravel spots I'm sure, just no luck with it this time. But didn't mean I didn't find nothing noteworthy.. Early on found a unique vertebrae, looks like snake, surprised the delicate spiny processes were still intact. Mostly typical grey shark teeth from the time period (lemon, bull, tiger, snaggle) but I'm sure there's lamnids too in there. Eventually found my largest grey shark vertebrae to date, a whopper compared to my micro one in my trip to a phosphate mine! But still relatively small, almost the radius the size of a dime, bought one recently before today that dwarfs it, but still a great uncommon find in my book. Lots of trash, I suppose from decades of "good ol boys" being there, both large stuff along the banks and remnants dug up, exponentially more than Peace river & Joshua creek. But also more colorful shark teeth on average & some pretty rocks (threw back frags of red ones early on, thought it was man-made before finding more of them). Overall lighter colored rocks too than the area much farther south I'm use to digging up (fortunate I guess I live in central FL). Yeah felt like I found more than that, some holes provided more than others.. definitely felt on par with the Peace river overall, just not as scenic of course. Still, I'd go there again perhaps..

Hello everyone! My latest trip into the creeks of Gainesville proved quite successful, quite a few dozen shark teeth found, as well as some other questionable pieces. Can anyone confirm if these are fossils and if so what kind, or just stones? Collected from Rattlesnake Creek. Thank you and happy hunting!

Hello everyone! I am new to TFF and am very excited for my future in paleontology! On my first trip to Hogtown Creek in Gainesville, Florida I came across an unusual find. While I hear that shark teeth are plentiful, I instead found this small, porous inch long or so object. It was found on the side of the creek, partially buried in some sand. I am not sure what this could be, perhaps a fossil or just some sort of wood? If anyone has any tips on where to look for fossils in the Gainesville area (specifically near the University of Florida) please don't hesitate to let me know! Thank you and have a great day!

Hello, We only hear about E coli contamination in Hogtown Creek, are the other creeks in the area also contaminated. Is it worth going to the other creeks to find shark teeth? On blogs I only hear about Hogtown, Possum and Rattlesnake as the main creeks for shark teeth finds. Thanks for your help!
