In this thread I wanna share some fossils from Holzmaden, which I found partly years ago but prepped recently with my new tools. I will not show only bones but also belemnites and other fossils from Holzmaden. All the finds are from the quarry Kromer. Hopefully I will be able to extend this thread step by step! So for today I want to show three bones from the posidionia shale from Holzmaden. Firstly this 3 cm long Ichthyosaur vertebra. Here is a picture of the unprepped piece: As you can see there was only the cross section visible so it was a kinda hard work. I think until now the prep took about 2 hours and I will probably prep it a bit more... but here is a picture of the current state of the vertebra: I am very satisfied with the result until now! Especially because I didn't lost too much of the fossil material in the areas where I had to glue it.

Today I finished prepping a little Ichthyosaur caudal vertebra from Holzmaden. Too bad I didn't took any pictures of the unprepped vert but I did a lot I prepped it with my air pen and with my new sandblasting machine. I am very happy about this tool Here it is: It's very small with a length of 1.2 cm. Hope you like it

Hello, TFF I was recently in Holzmaden, Germany when I found a piece of an octopus. I also recently read a book about octopus intelligence. This made me wonder if some prehistoric creatures might have been intelligent. I am especially interested in tool use, which has been observed in some modern animals. ( Octopuses, Cetaceans, Birds.) Has anyone found some possibly intelligent animals(fossilized?)

Cross sections of the stomach, full of squid/cephalopod hooks and beaks, of an early Jurassic ichthyosaur (Stenopterygius quadriscissus). One slice has the animals ribs, the lighter tan objects, around the stomach, while the other is entirely of the stomach contents. -

This is a 10 cm long part of an Ichthyosaur rib from the quarry Kromer near Holzmaden. As you can see its kinda damaged. Firstly it was already damaged as i found it and secondly the preparation wasnt optimal as well. Normally you prep these bones from Holzmaden with air abrasive but I only have an air pen. This piece was found by me two years ago in the Kromer Quarry near Holzmaden and was prepped by Roger Furze ( @Ludwigia ). On the piece you can see a disarticulated Ichthyosaur skull with some ribs and vertebrae. You can see one eyehole very good, although the eye itself isn't preserved. Isolated bones are not that rare in Holzmaden but such pieces are very rare! It could be a skull of a juvenile.

This fossil was found by me two years ago in the visitor quarry Kromer near Holzmaden and was prepped by Roger Furze ( @Ludwigia ). Thanks again On the piece you can see a disarticulated Ichthyosaur skull with some ribs and vertebrae. You can see one eyehole very good, although the eye itself isnt preserved. Isolated bones are not that rare in Holzmaden but such pieces are very rare ! At the maximum the piece is about 24 cm long. Unprepped: Prepped: The eyehole is very good visible: (Probably my favourite part ) The other eyehole: Some more bones: A vertebra: This one could be from a juvenile which is very rare! -

This is a kinda funny combination out of a fish bone and a very rare pterosaur bone. The fish bone is the bigger one (5 cm long) and is lying on the top of the pterosaur bone. The piece comes from the quarry Kromer near Holzmaden (Lower Jurassic). As these are marine deposits you can imagine how rare the pterosaur bone is Some very bad detailed pictures: (sorry for the bad quality but my camera is not good enough) -

A bit damaged but nevertheless a nice Dactylioceras commune with a length of 14 cm. I found it in the quarry Kromer near Holzmaden (Lower Jurassic). -

Hey. Saw this nice matrix full of ichthyosaurs bones. Can somebody identify which bones are which? It would be a great help. It is a juvenile Stenopterygius sp. The upper surface is plastered with the dissarticulated front part of a juvenile Ichthyosaur. Shows coracoid, scapula, humerus and numerous paddle bones as well as jaw fragments a few scattered teeth and a lot of ribs and other bones. I can’t tell which bones correspond... I don’t know if there is jaw fragments(can’t see any teeth)and the images are quite bad quality. Can you help? It is from the Jurassic, Lower Toarcian. Posideonienscheifer Formation And the location is Weilstetten near Balingen, Baden-Wurtenburg, Germany. The matrix is 22 x 17.5 x 2 cm. This is all the information I have. Thanks for helping. Hi, I saw this slate from Holzmaden,Germany,where many many ichthyosauruses remains have been found,online being sold as « ichthyosaurus bones » Are they really bones? I can see some possible structure but I’m not sure... I never saw any 2D bones like that in a slate. What do you think? Here are the picture I have. Is it rare if it is??? Regards
