    Hello from Texas!

Hello everyone! I'm from Houston, Texas and I've recently gotten into fossils and natural history from reading books to my young daughter who loves dinosaurs. From my limited research it doesn't look like there is much in the way of fossils here in the Houston area, except maybe on the Gulf Coast. As a kid I used to sift for shark teeth on Florida's Gulf Coast, and found tons. Does that technique work here as well? I'm also hoping there may be some opportunities during our family trips this spring/summer. We're heading to Branson, Missouri this month and Buffalo, New York in July. Maybe some trilobites or brachiopods? Either way, just excited for an excuse to be outdoors with the family! Looking forward to learning more from this site.

    micro bone and claw?

found in gravel from Brazos river here in west Houston it appears to be a very tiny claw but will let the more experienced determine also there is what appears to be a small bone also took a pic of it with micro scope camera. I guess another possibility could be a tiny tooth?

If this is what it looks like that would be a cool find. it is 2 inches across and an inch and a quarter thick found in a gravel load west of Houston Texas from the Brazos River

    Hello from Houston

Howdy! Often view and read about finds on this forum, so decided to join. Quite a few of our finds lack firm identification, so hopefully you guys can help solve some little mysteries. Over the last year, we have visited Whiskey Bridge in College Station, North Sulphur River and Sherman in North Texas, and the Waco Research Pit. Future trips planned to West Texas, Southwest Texas and the Panhandle. The cover photo on my profile is a heavily pyritized baculite that was found at North Sulphur River in spring 2018.
  14. My husband and Daughter found this piece along the banks of the Brazos River in Sugar Land (south West Houston) we have no idea if it’s fossil or just bone. Or what animal it came from - any help appreciated
  15. Howdy all. My father was a wildlife photographer in Houston TX for many years. I recently came across a box of slides from March 1978, where he documented the excavation of a fossil giant ground sloth in the Houston area. I believe it was a discovery made from some kids, and their parents contacted someone to do the excavation. However, I can find nothing about the discovery or the dig online. Anyone have any info? Thanks, Mike
  16. Hi guys and gals, I haven't posted anything for like 2 months. I have a question, particularly for anyone who lives in Houston, Texas. Does the Houston Museum of Natural Science identify fossils??? I have seen many posts of people who went to the museum and paleontologists identified their finds. If so, how can I contact them??? Thanks in advance, Ramon

    Tooth Identification

Found this tooth in a fossil bed being excavated near Houston, Texas. Other finds have already been identified as mammoth, mastodon, horse and bison. But the paleontology guy doesn't know what this one is. And we have two of them. Can anyone identify this for us?

    Houston TX area

Hi all, I am going to be in Houston 11/4 -11/6. Other than Whisky Bridge, is there anything in the Houston area worth collecting? Also if someone wants to meet PM me, always like to meet other FF members. All info will be kept confidential, as always. Thanks, Herb
  19. Hey All, I'm a Coloradan who recently moved to Houston for the summer. I've been eager to go out and hunt down some fossils. I've been to some places int eh immediate vicinity like Denton, TX; Crockett, TX, and Mineral Wells, TX. So far I've been blessed to find great marine fossils like crinoids, bracs, ..etc. I was wondering if anyone can guide me to better locations around Texas, preferably around the Houston area, or even Austin or Dallas. I'm willing to dive for a great day of hunting ! I'm also open to any kind of fossils, I have a big interest in Shark Teeth, but would also like to find other stuff. Thanks !
  20. Hi, In the second installment of my collection, I´ll show the Gastropods....
  21. Hello all, I am from the northern Houston tx area, and as someone who has just selected their major, in Geology, I am interested in expanding my rock collection, and having a great time as well. I AM looking for kool rocks that I can dig out myself that is also a place I can take my kids with me. I have been to Enchanted Rock, whiskey bridge, and a few places in the Austin area, but i am heading out this weekend (today is 4-9-2012) and would love a place where the kids could find some recognizable fossils, they think my crinoids look like round rocks...any help you can give me would be great! AMATEJ
