Hi everyone, I was out walking today in Lincoln County, Idaho. While I was walking, I decided to take a look at rocks. All the sudden, I saw this one. I picked it up, and noticed it was EXTREMELY smooth. It is also egg shaped. There is also a small chip in it. It also has a slightly reflective surface, when I put it under a magnifier, some of the light from the magnifier was reflecting off of this rock. You can actually see it in some of the photos. I thought to myself, “Is this a fossil egg?“ To be honest, I am VERY skeptical if it is truly a fossil egg. Regardless, I decided to post anyway and see what you guys think of it. What do you guys think? Jared.

Hello, 3 days ago I was out on the farm looking for indian artifacts. I started digging and immediately started finding fossil after fossile. I have buckets full of all kinds and have no clue what they are. I found them off the snake River 5 miles or so on the Idaho oregon border. I have cleaned some up, and I hope the pictures show what you need to identify them. It's been exciting findings them. Location: Found along the Moyie river in northern Idaho. This specimen seems to have some characteristics of petrified wood but is difficult to confirm just by looking at it. It is smooth on one end but rough raised layers along the rest. The colors are teal and brown. I want to check with the community to get another opinion before continuing to attempt identifying the specimen. Thank you.

Hi everyone, When I least expected it, I made an unexpected catch while I was fishing in the snake river, at the bottom of the canyon near Twin Falls, Idaho. Since nothing was biting, I decided to set my pole down and look at some rocks. While I was digging through some loose soil in the river, I found this. It appears to be a small piece of petrified wood. When I found it, I said to myself, “Well, it’s not a fish, but it’s something.” At least I got something while fishing! Jared

I was prepping the garden today at my house. While I was building one of the raised beds, I found this sticking out of the dirt. It’s definitely rock, and it looks like wood. However, I cannot tell if this is petrified wood or something else. Can someone help me ID this? Location where it was found was Dietrich, Idaho.

I am so glad to see this. When I was a kid I was told Idaho didn't have dinosaurs, but luckily my colleagues and I have managed to show they are here and were just a bit more hidden than in areas with actual good rock exposures. And now to get an official state dinosaur approved and on the way to the Governors desk is extra special. Kuddos to all the school kids who helped with this! https://www.ktvb.com/video/news/local/208/bill-to-give-idaho-a-state-dinosaur-passes-house/277-5ad44216-c84b-4e12-ae38-9745f5887ca2 https://www.postregister.com/news/education/ucon-elementary-students-gain-state-approval-of-official-dinosaur-bill/article_5721148a-ca7f-11ed-ab4c-27d92a12b0ac.html

Hi everyone, I happened to be out fishing today in Twin Falls, Idaho. While I was fishing, I decided I want to look at rocks. So, I set my pole down securely, and waited for the fish to bite by looking at rocks. While I was looking at rocks, I discovered one that was very interesting. It almost looks like it had stripes running through it when you look at the thin edge of it. I felt another one of those rocks, so I proceeded to pull it out. While pulling it out, this showed up through the dirt. It looks like a bone. It’s about the size of my thumb. I decided to do a test I sometimes do to see if it was rock or not. I decided to try to bite into it. If it was a bone, it would’ve dented. However, it didn’t even suffer a scratch. It’s also slightly heavier despite its small size. I also tapped it against my teeth, and I got the sound of rock, not bone. Then, I did the final test. I attempted to break it with my hands. A bone this size would have easily broke, but this one did not. I am pretty certain that this is a fossil, not regular bone. If this is a fossil bone, is there any way of knowing when it came from? As I am still in Twin Falls, I will post better pictures when I get home. Jared

Hi! New member here living in Western Montana. We do a lot of travel through Idaho and Washington, and have family in Texas so we are down there quite a bit too. I really enjoy crystal and gem hunting and am learning how to identify and find fossils. We are currently visiting said family in Texas and I will hopefully have some cool Oklahoma finds to post soon!! Can't wait to learn more!

Hi everyone, I am very discouraged and frustrated about something fossil related, and need some help and advice. I moved to near Twin Falls, Idaho in 2021. I have found interesting fossils like petrified wood and gastropods in Nampa, and pieces of invertebratae, but ever since I moved here, I have not found anything. Why is that? Why am I not finding anything? Is it my location? It’s so frustrating! Where can I go to find fossils that’s close by AND I am allowed to hunt for fossils? Does a place like that even exist?

Hi everyone, I decided to visit a spot where I found several wood fossils in Travertine. The spot is in the canyon near Twin Falls, Idaho. While I was going through some rocks, I found a rock that had this sticking out of it. As I grabbed the rock, it accidentally broke off. When I looked at it, I could tell right away that it was definitely a fossil of some kind. On the top, it looks like it had a part where something grew out of it at one point. It’s completely hollow inside, except for something that I can’t get a picture of right now. It also has a part on the side where it looks like a root came out at one point. To me, it almost looks like a carrot root. I actually found a similar living plant near that fossil. I am posting a picture of that as well. Any idea what this is? Jared.

Hi everyone, I was on my way to my doctors appointment. I was walking to the door, when this caught my eye in the gravel. I thought it was wood at first, but I was mistaken. It’s definitely a rock. It was found in Twin Falls, Idaho, near the sidewalk. I’m looking for confirmation. Is this petrified wood? If it is, it’s my first find of 2023! Jared

I found this while I was out looking at rocks. To me, it almost looks like a bone of some kind. However, it is a rock. I don’t know if it’s a fossil or not. Can someone help me figure out if this is a Fossil or not? If it is a Fossil, what animal could it be too? I doubt it’s a fossil, but I thought I would ask anyway. No harm in asking.

Hi everyone, I have not been on for a while, how is everyone? I have a very interesting find I want to show and hopefully figure out what it is. I was digging in my yard replacing a broken sprinkler. While I was digging, I found this. I’m attaching pictures. You see that black thing on the top? It almost looks like a tooth. It’s smooth, and it looks like it’s encased in some kind of stone. I confirmed it is not metal, as it is not magnetic. Do you think this is a tooth? If it is, it’s the first fossil I found in months. Location is Dietrich, Idaho. What do you guys think? If you need more photos, I will get them. Jared

Does anyone think this is a fossil of any type, or just a weird rock?
AmINutz posted a topic in Fossil ID
It's a long story. Found it 40 yrs ago in Idaho on a hike behind my parent's home. Parent's died, found it with the other rocks we had collected over the years. Does anyone think it is anything? It weighs at least 15lbs. A bit smaller than a volleyball. -
I found a rock in North idaho. I broke it open and scraped out as much dirt I could without damaging what looks like a small bone. It's about 3/4 of an inch long. It is also different color and texture of anything else found in this rock. Would like some opinions please. Thank you.

So, I was going through my rock collection, just going through memories, because the guy who gave me all the rocks died in 2018. I found these at the bottom of the box. I remember he did not give these to me. In fact, I found these somewhere in Idaho, but I can’t remember exactly where. They look like amber, so I shone my UV light on them. Sure enough, they passed that test. I am posting pictures under regular light and UV light. I am pretty sure it’s amber, but I want a second opinion. What do you think? Jared

I discovered this fossil very near the summit of a 8,500 foot (2,600 meter) peak in southern Idaho. It was within a dark band of strata and there were various coral/shell fossils found in the same strata (see last photo). Amazing to me that the seafloor is now hoisted to the top of a mountain peak! I can't tell what this particular fossil is, though I immediately thought bone given the structure when I picked it up. My 8 year old is confident it is a T-Rex, but given it is near oceanic fossils, I'm doubtful. The fossil is broken and seems to be sliced in half vertically, exposing the inner part of the fossil. The ends of the fossil is also missing so hard to tell how long this could have been. Notice some bumps/ripples on the backside of he fossil (photo 6). Could this be orthoceras or something similar?

This cylindrical object came from my neighbor whose mother was an avid artifact and rock collector. She had no idea what it was or when her mother found it but it was a long time ago up in the area of Carey, Idaho, on her mother's private property. The object is cylindrical with a small sway toward the middle of it. It is 4' tall and approximately 2 3/8" at the widest point. It is stone or clay colored uniformly aside from the ends where it has a brownish gold tinge and shows circles in the center of each end. It is very heavy given its size and seems dense it weighs 1 lb 6.1 oz. Any help would be appreciated on this one.- 39 replies

OK, so once again, I found something today. I would like an ID on it. It’s about the size of my thumbnail, looks like a piece of a prehistoric fruit or something. I honestly don’t know what it is. It looks like it was once attached to a prehistoric plant, you can see in one of the pictures. I’m not sure what it is. Any help can be appreciated on this. Found in Boise, Idaho. It is cloudy right now so the light conditions are not best.
