    Silurian Invertebrate Needs ID

These are two fossils of the same species collected at the Long Pond Road Site along the Erie Canal in Greece, New York. They are from the middle Silurian Rochester shale. These were collected last winter, and I have since been unable to identify them. Both are no greater than 3cm in length. Some interesting fine detail is visible on the first specimen. The American dime is 1.8cm in diameter.

    Invertebrate ID help requested

All, This is my first post, although I have been reading with interest for some time. As I approach retirement, I find myself returning to the hobbies of my youth, including fossil hunting. I found these fossils in a single rock in Northeastern Oklahoma (a few miles South of Tulsa). It came from demolished concrete structure, so I do not know where the rock originated. The rock is very hard and very fine grained. It reminds me of chert or a very hard limestone. The first photo shows one end of the rock, where the closeup photos were taken. The fossil in the upper left is about one inch (2.5 cm) in length and about one-half inch (1.3 cm) in height. The second photo shows a close-up of this fossil. I am nearing the file size limit, so I will attempt to reply to this topic with additional photos. I would be grateful if forum members can help me with identification. Best wishes.

  6. Dear all, Recently I purchased a "Nostoceras Malagasyense" Heteromorphic Ammonite from an online platform. Initially, I didn't question the authenticity of the specimen, as the seller seems to have quite a few Cleoniceras ammonites for sale (which are clearly genuine). However for this piece I'm quite unsure if it is truly authentic, and would like a second opinion. I understand that there is an Export Ban for fossils from China, but to my understanding that's for Vertebrate fossils (ammonites are invertebrates). My main concerns are: Is it a legitimate fossil? Some parts look carved, but at the same time some of the striations look too difficult/ not worth the effort to forge for the price paid. Thank you!

    Reintroduction

Hello all, I have been gone for a year or so due to a number of lengthy expeditions for work, and of course the pandemic. However, I am finally back home at the labs, and have nearly two years worth of fossils to process from all over the U.S. Sure, I hunt worms no one cares about for a living when I am not yelling at undergrads to clean up after themselves and chewing out grad students for wearing flip-flops, but I enjoy a good fossil hunting trip. I am still working through my specimens from Cowboy Pass and the Wheeler Shale in Utah from 2019, and have nearly half of my Green River Formation specimens finished up. For 2020, I procured permits and a small grant that allowed me to go hunting for specimens in places I would normally only be able to take pictures as we build up our collection here at the university. On that note, the Uni still hasn't given me a critter room or a museum space, but they did spring for proper storage for the new collections I am building for them. I was supposed to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip with actual paleontologists to a famous non-US site, but the pandemic put the clamps on that for now. All that has really changed is that my employer now outfits me with a company van for my excursions, so I am able to haul more gear to even more places than I would in a rental or my death-trap VW. Well, that and I have new cameras and some other equipment that have made for significantly better expeditions. As a taste of things to come- I was lucky enough to connect with a rancher near the famous Norden Bridge and was allowed to keep a few samples! (though I found some really, really good stuff for the rancher too, who has a collection that made me lightheaded) There are from a new cut he had just made through a sandhill to build a new cattle trough for his stock. I spent hours sifting through the scree. I knew this was the place to stop first as the first photo was clearly visible as I was driving through to another site on the property he asked me to check out for him. He's an older fellow and it was HOT out so he was very amenable to letting me hunt on his land as long as he was allowed to keep the "real good stuff" as he put it. I actually had a better time sucking down a few cold ones with him after the hunt as we sorted the finds and traded fossil hunting stories. I obviously cant provide locations or names, but I was invited back anytime and can actually camp out when I do, which makes it a bonanza for me! No certain what the first is, as more research is needed, but the second is a fragment of one of the 3-toed horses found in that formation.

    Cretaceous Crab/Lobster?

I found these fragments of something crabby on my last trip to the North Sulphur River in Texas. They were partially exposed in one of the red bed layers of the Ozan Formation, and were so delicate that they started to crumble when I extracted them. I saved the more whole and identifiable pieces. They're a kind of muddy yellow color, with maybe some hints of the original pigmentation in the blue areas. The red beds tend to either turn fossils black (when they're phosphatized) or a dusty red, so this was quite an unusual find for me. The closest to an ID I've been able to get so far is some sort of lobster like an Enoploclytia, but other than that I'm unsure. Any help with an ID would be appreciated, as would any advice as to how I should go about preserving the fossils to make them more durable, as they are still extremely fragile.

    Gastropod or something similar?

Hey again, this is a very tiny ~.5cm shell that I found some time ago at the regular road cut at the Lost River exposure of the Mahantango Formation. I would guess it’s a Gastropod or something similar but if it could be narrowed down any further I would be elated. Thanks guys!

    Worm Borings?

Hey everyone just wanted to check in with you all and see how you are doing. I also wanted to inquire about these Worm Borings/Concretions, and what our members consensus might be. Maybe our resident concretion collector @Ruger9a would be able to help me out. Anyway, here are the pictures: Here is a photo of the excavation site:
