I recently came across a cool-looking piece with three different shells close together in a matrix, but despite my attempt to Google some pointers while I was pondering if I wanted it or not, I'm simply not trained up enough to determine if fossils are real. There's some parts that some articles were talking about that make me think it could be real, and others that make me think not so much... I have a feeling the matrix maybe isn't the original, but I'm hoping perhaps the shells themselves are still fossilized? But I'm really not sure -- anyways, the pictures I took are below. I hope they gi

Is this Metacanthina Trilobite real?
Lydon posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi everyone, I got this rather nice looking Metacanthina recently as a present as well as some other trilobites (which have sadly turned out to be clear fabrications after some research, clear bubbles etc.) This one looked more convincing and I have gone over it with a magnifying glass but couldn't see any details various websites told me to look out for. Was wondering if someone with more experience could spot anything suspect! There is a crack along the matrix and on the rear of it's right eye some lens detail can be seen. Is this trilobite real?... NOT!
Sjfriend posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Is this trilobite real? How often have we seen this question? Since folks are often asking I thought I'd toss in this obvious fake that I got in a bulk rock buy years ago. I'm no pro but I couldn't even find any real parts of this thing. I'll point out what I see and others can add their ideas Here is overall from top Here is closer shot of the front showing a few big problems. 1: the crack running around the side of the trilobite shows where the fake bug is separating from the base. They take a chunk of matrix, carve out a hole then glue on a molded fake. Then gl- 18 replies

Is This Claudiosaurus Skeleton Real?
ColeFossilFinder posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hello I am trying to figure out if this specimen is real or if parts of it are composites. I do know that a protective coating has been put on to protect it, and that it had to be glued together once, but I am not sure if the digits on the hands are real or if the ribs are real. Thanks!- 6 replies

BlindFool posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Greetings all, I have found a third interesting keichousaurus. Compared to the other two I think this one looks better in my opinion. But as per usual I don’t have experience with keichousaurus so I would like some advice. Please let me know what you all think!- 11 replies

Greetings all! im tempted to pull the trigger on this keichousaurus but I am hesitant due to being inexperienced with them. I see some white specks on the bone and I haven’t seen that before so it popped up some red flags however, I am not experienced with them nor do I know enough to confidently say real or fake. On the back of the matrix it has another smaller keichousaurus. Please let me know what you all think!

So I had been browsing for some new fossils, and stumbled over a nice Moroccan fossil on a seemingly american website. And they're selling this (almost fantastic) fossil, of a part of a skull, allegedly from either a Carcharodontosaurus or a Deltadromeus (Most likely not a delta). But is it legit?

Red flags on "fossils"
indominus rex posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Today I was scrolling through our favorite auction site when I spotted this, I immediately noticed something was off just looking at its title, this piece was being listed as a dinosaur skull with jaws, it already had quite a few people bidding for it. It was quite clearly not a dinosaur skull, I messaged the seller and I feel like he shouldn't list this and label it as something that is extremely desired by any fossil collector(and possibly illegal depending on where it was found). Regards, indominus rex- 23 replies
