  3. Hi all! You know I visit my favorite Volga river site (Ulyanovsk Oblast) more or less often, but this time I decided to give a try to another well-known Jurassic-Cretaceous site on the Volga river, located in the nearby Samara Oblast (city of Syzran). It's famous for its iridescent ammonites as well as marine reptile finds. I hoped to discover a real alternative to the Ulyanovsk site particularly as the conditions are very similar: surface collecting on river bank. Here the Ulyanovsk site is to the north, Syzran to the south. The latter is home to two distinct locations: in the city itself (Oxfordian-Volgian, 2km) and by the Kashpir village (to the south): Volgian to Barremian, 4 km.
  4. Hi all! Those who follow my reports know I was planning another trip to Ulyanovsk in spring. Well, here is the report, in continuation of 1, 2 and 3. This time I was on the shore for 3 days. In short, the weather was fine, the ice abundant, the competition high and the finds scarce. The trip felt more like an extravagant outing than a productive fossil hunt

  7. The temps are hovering just above 0°C. right now and there were snow showers predicted yesterday. Nevertheles, my wife noticed that I was beginning to show symptoms of cabin fever, so she just mentioned casually that I could take off if I felt like it. So I did. The Wutach is no place to hang out if snow is on the way, so I thought I'd take a chance with the Danube Valley again. There was a bit of snow in between, but just light sleet showers which were really no bother and none of it stayed on the ground, so digging was no problem. I didn't fancy the idea of bailing out the hole in the divisum zone again, so I walked down the ditch to my excavation in the hypselocylum zone and spent about 6 hours breaking rock. At the end of the day I was quite pleased with the spoils. I'm pretty sure that there should be some nice ones this time. I spent most of the day today cleaning up most of them with the stylus and tomorrow I'll be getting down to abrading them. Here's a photo of the ones I've done so far, which is already the majority of them. Still just a few smaller ones to remove from the matrix.

ø 18cm. divisum zone Early Kimmeridgian Lacunosamergel Formation Lochen Subformation Sponge facies Found in the Upper Danube Valley With epizoan tube worms, sponges and a small attached ammonite.
  19. I took another trip yesterday to the Kimmeridgian site in the Danube Valley and continued my dig in the divisum zone. This time I came up with, among other things, a Pseudhimalayites uhlandi ammonite with a diameter of 18cm. These things can get quite large, so I'm dealing with just the phragmocone here. As I've mentioned in other posts, this exposure is in the middle of a sponge reef, so a lot of activity was going on here at the time that this creature hit the dust, so to speak. It landed on a group of sponges and began to deteriorate and deform, revealing the insides of some of the septa, but not before a number of epizoans, such as tube worms, colonized it, some bits of sponge got stuck to it, and another little ammonite shell dropped onto it before it was finally buried and retained for posterity. The photos below can be enlarged to have a better look at the detritus. Thought it might interest you.
