I found this on the shore of Lake Michigan in Long Beach, Indiana– just south of the Michigan border. I have no clue what I am looking at. Any ideas? Thanks for your help!

Ha, I can't quite believe I've joined a fossil forum. I've been collecting rocks for decades, first in Switzerland where I grew up, and then on Lake Michigan beaches in Illinois and South East Michigan. Mostly I've been picking rocks for their looks and the unbelievable variety of colors, shapes, patterns. I sort and display my rocks according to either, types, patterns, colors or textures. The occasional bits and pieces of crinoids and horn corals I'd find, didn't really fit my collections and I would just take some of them with me, as the odd curiosity. That is, until I found my first chain coral, and I fell in love: Right after, I also found my cover photo fossil, a pretty rugose coral "daisy" peeking out of a small rough rock: So now, I'm turning over any stone that looks like it might possibly harbor a fossil. I'm still giving away petoskey coral to other rock hounds, since I like my stones and fossils as raw as I find them on the beaches. So no petoskeys for me. As my daughter (now a geologist!) puts it: "Mom doesn't like tarted up rocks." ;-) So, having caught the fossil bug, I've come across this wonderfully helpful and informative forum while researching my little finds. What a great community of enthusiasts I've discovered, people who are willing to share their knowledge with each other and newbies like me. So glad I found you all!
