Found several of these on a beach in Grand Marais, MN on Lake Superior. The light colored part is a bit rougher feeling and the red/maroon knobs or nodules are quite hard and smooth and raised. I can’t find anything on them…someone mentioned in another forum possibly Rapakivi Granite or Granite Mica Schist but I think they seem a bit different than the images I saw of those. The largest one has a few tiny pockets of crystals. Thoughts?

Hi all, a friend of a friend found this on the most northern point of Lake Superior, off Copper Harbor. I suspect it is fossil but to my eye it just strikes me as modern. Maybe escaped aquarium coral. But this person also claims to have found other pieces of corals there. Might anyone be able to say if this agrees with fossil corals of that area or is it a taxon not to be expected from the Paleozoic? Thanks!

I found these rocks between Ashland, Wisconsin and Little Girls Point in Michigan. There was so much rock hunting that day, I lost track of exactly where! Picture 2 (the tan colored) that's posted in the comments, is a coral fossil on the back. Shown is the front, I've never seen something like that before. Please share your knowledge, it's greatly appreciated!

I found these rocks at Black River Harbor and Little Girl's Point in Michigan a few days ago. It's driving me crazy not knowing what they are! Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Found washed up shore of Lake Superior. It is hard like a rock and smooth but bumpy. Some type of fossil seed?

Hello. I found this rock on the shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. I don't have the foggiest idea what this could be. Is it a fossil? I thought if anyone could steer me in the right direction it would be you fine folks. I have more pics I can post if needed, just reached my limit. Apparently I need to compress my images a bit more. Found in about 3 inches of water off Park Point in Duluth, Minnesota. The oblong stone/fossil is 2" x 1.5". Fossilized coral was found nearby, for what that's worth. The radial lines do connect on both sides of the stone/fossil.

I found this a few years ago at my camp near Munising, MI. I find a lot of fossilized corals, trilobites, and bryozoan there. I am going through my fossils and trying to label them, and I noticed this odd one. I am thinking it is a crinoid or a sea pen, but I am not sure.

I was going through some of my old containers of rocks and found these nice spotted guys that I remember picking up along the shore of Lake Superior here in MN, and googling variations on "spotted lake superior rock" mostly gets you pictures of agates. They sparkle in the light, both on their outer surface as well as inside. Here's a group shot, plus some closeups of the two with the clearest spotting and a view of the inside of a broken one: I know nobody wants to hear this on an ID post, but I have no idea where I found this next one. It was in a container filled with some rocks that I know are from Minnesota and Colorado, plus a modern Arca zebra shell and some sort of oyster shell, so quite frankly this could have come from just about anywhere. (I wasn't very worried about ease of identification as a kid, I'm sorry to say.) I'm hoping the look of it is distinctive enough for someone to have at least a ballpark ID for it, but who knows. It looks a little similar in coloration/patterning to jaspers I've seen, but I will fully admit that my knowledge of rocks pretty much stops at "it's pretty and I want to pick it up." These two images have been brightened to make the colors more distinct; the rock itself is darker. Any help is appreciated!
