    Sclerorhynchus pettersi, North TX Maastrichtian, Cretaceous Jun, 2023 Supposedly distinguished from the Campanian Sclerorhynchus fanninensis teeth by their single hooked barb, however this feature seems to not be so definitive. Some specimens do not exhibit this hooked appearance while others do as shown in my sample as well as others. If the species are synonymous, S. pettersi is the preferred name.

  5. The unnamed giant Tylosaur of the Moroccan Phosphates is revealed at last. The great and mighty Hainosaurus is a previously unrecognized macropredator present in the latest Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) of Morocco. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/365437927_First_Record_of_a_Tylosaurine_Mosasaur_from_the_Latest_Cretaceous_Phosphates_of_Morocco Authors: @Praefectus @BrennanThePaleoDude @pachy-pleuro-whatnot-odon Abstract: The latest Cretaceous Phosphates of Morocco preserve the highest biodiversity of mosasaurid squamates anywhere in the world. Intensive sampling over the past century has uncovered at least ten genera and thirteen species from the mosasaur subgroups Halisauromorpha, Plioplatecarpinae, and Mosasaurinae. Notably missing from the assemblage are members of the macropredatory Tylosaurinae. The Tylosaurinae were globally rare in the Maastrichtian and their apparent absence has been previously explained by either collecting bias, ecological preference for deeper waters, or habitat restriction to higher paleolatitudes. Here, we describe a new tylosaurine mosasaurid, Hainosaurus boubker sp. nov., based on several partial skulls and isolated teeth originating from the Couche III layer of the Sidi Chennane Phosphate quarry near Oued Zem, Morocco. It is unique amongst tylosaurine mosasaurids in possessing blade-like teeth that are laterally compressed, encircled by enamel facets, and differentiated along the dental margin. The discovery of this new taxon in the Maastrichtian of Morocco is remarkable as it represents both the youngest species of Tylosaurinae and the first occurrence in North Africa. It has been a pleasure to work on this project and I am so happy to finally see it come to a conclusion.   7. During a recent visit on April 25th, 2023 to the Field Museum, one of the best museums in all of Chicago, I stopped by the new Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories exhibit. I must say, it's a pretty good exhibit (perhaps my third favorite exhibit, only behind the Hall of Conservation and (one of the Museums's best and most accurate exhibits) the Evolving Planet)!!! The Native Truths exhibit shows and talks about the struggles and triumphs of the many Native American Nations from their origins to the modern day in blunt and extremely accurate ways. But there was one part of the exhibit that somewhat surprised me. It's a display case with several Late Cretaceous fossils from North and South Dakota alongside an interactive pad that talked about how the specimens were originally held by the Standing Rock Institute of Natural History. I'd never heard of the Standing Rock Institute of Natural History before. I was immediately intrigued but saddened to hear it closed due to lack of funding. I researched it a bit more and discovered it's located in Fort Yates, North Dakota. It's website is also apparently still up. https://srinstituteofnaturalhistory.com The museum was located in the heart of the Standing Rocks Reservation, home to the Hunkpapa, Sihasapa, Ihanktonwona, and Pabaksa bands of the Great Sioux Native American Nation. The Reservation itself is the result of the U.S. Government's continual and illicit breaking of Treaties with the regions Native American Tribes in order to grab as much of regions gold as possible in the 1870s-1890s. This is a very simplified explanation as to what happened as whole pages could be filled with with confirmed accounts of truly barbaric atrocities sections of the U.S. Government and the U.S. army inflicted on these Native American Nations at this period in time...something likely too graphic and horrifying to talk about on the forum. But I encourage you all to research it yourselves for if we don't learn or heed the lessons from history, we are doomed to repeat it. Anyways, from what could gather, the museum wasn't particularly large but still impressive in its own right. Opening in 2007, the Standing Rock Institute of Natural History is apparently the first tribal run museum to have it's own Paleontology Code of Ethics and at its height had 10,000 Paleontological specimens. I'm very sad to hear it closed due to lack of funding.
  8. Hello all, Found some nice fossils. Around Vaals in Limburg (the Netherlands), Cretaceous sediments occur. The Kalksteen van Vijlen (Vijlen chalk), Orsbach Kreide (Orsbach chalk) and Kunrader Kalksteen (Kunrader chalk) or Vetschauer Kalksteen are present. Fossils from these sediments consist of belemnites (Belemnella (Pachybelemnella) sumensis (Jeletzky, 1949) and/or Belemnella (Pachybelemnella) cimbrica (Birkelund, 1957), some forms are described as Belemnella ex gr. sumensis/cimbrica and Belemnitella sp.), sea urchins (Echinocorys sp. including Echinocorys scutata (Leske, 1778) and Cardiaster granulosus (Goldfuss, 1829), oysters (Pycnodonte vesicularis (Lamarck, 1806), shark teeth (for example Carcharias sp., Cretalamna lata (Agassiz, 1843) and Pseudocorax affinis (Münster in Agassiz, 1843) and other fossils. Many fossils are from the Vijlen Chalk (early Early to early Late Maastrichtian). Fossils from the Vijlen 0-3 and Vijlen 4-6 (Vijlen chalk) are approximately between 70.6 and 69.3 million years old (the basis of interval 0 of the Vijlen Member could be dated at 70.6 Ma). Lithology and bioclast contents for intervals 5 (upper part) and 6 of the Vijlen Member at Mamelis (Mamelis 62D-78) have indicated an age of 69.7-69.3 mya. Including the latest part of the late late Maastrichtian (Formatie van Maastricht), fossils can be between 70.6 and 66 million years old.   9. Hello all, Found some nice Cretaceous fossils in my area (Limburg). Most of the fossils are between 70.6 and 69.3 million years old. Fossils from the Vijlen Chalk (Vijlen 0-3 and Vijlen 4-6) are approximately between 70.6 and 69 million years old. Including the latest part of the late late Maastrichtian, the age for all late Cretaceous fossils from Limburg is 72-66 mya. -one belemnite phragmocone (Steinkern/internal mold/impression); -one part of a sea urchin spine; -two oysters (small). One Pycnodonte vesicularis (Lamarck, 1806) and one other oyster (same species?); -one sea urchin (possibly Cardiaster sp. From the Kalksteen van Kunrade (macrofossils are rare in this chalk).

Yesterday another fossil hunt in Late Cretaceous sediments (early early Maastrichtian, perhaps some fossils from the late late Campanian are also present but possibly only early early Maastrichtian (earliest Maastrichtian). These sediments and the Formation itself is around 70-68 and/or 71-67 million years old. Found some black, brown and light coloured belemnites (often broken parts of the rostrum and one broken one embedded in chalk), some very small shark teeth (1mm-1 cm), and one big sea urchin in chalk (Cardiaster granulosus (Goldfuss, 1829). My girlfriend found the sea urchin and was very happy because it is the first Cardiaster sp. she found. All of these organisms lived in the Cretaceous sea that covered Europe between 70 and 66 million years ago (including during the end of the Cretaceous, the late late Maastrichtian).

  13. Last January 12, I found some Exogyra sp. oysters in a limestone Late Campanian / Early Maastrichtian strata (SE Pyrenees, Catalonia, Spain), who turned to show abundant beekite rings. I owe to @abyssunder my knowledge of this mineral phenomenon, which, in my area,occurs mainly over laminar-type shells like oysters' (It can occur on other fossils, though). Have you fossils with beekite rings ?

  15. Hello all! I visited a small creek not far away from where I live (Vaals, Selzerbeek). This location has late Cretaceous sediments from the Gulpen and Maastricht Formations (Kalksteen van Vijlen, Orsbach Kreide en Kunrader Kalksteen). I think most of the finds are from the Vijlen Kalksteen (Vijlen Chalk). Found some nice late Cretaceous (early Maastrichtian) fossils including some small shark teeth and one fossil gastropod Steinkern/internal mold (I don't know the exact species). The fossils are belemnites (Belemnitella and Belemnella (Pachybelemnella) sp., parts of Echinocorys sea urchins (I think Echinocorys scutata (Leske, 1778) and one complete one (possible Echinocorys scutata (Leske, 1778), oysters (Pycnodonte vesicularis (Lamarck, 1806) and one Cardiaster sp. (possibly C. granulosus (Goldfuss, 1829). The shark teeth (crowns) in particular are quite rare from this location and one crown is 1,4-1,5 cm long. One small shark teeth has the roots. I am not quite sure which species this is (third tooth at the bottom row in the first picture). Also found one Equus sp. (horse tooth) and one unkown tooth from the Holocone or Pleistocene epoch. Edited: the small shark tooth with the root and side cusps is possibly Cretalamna appendiculata (Agassiz, 1843) and the snail is Natica sp. (N. cretacea (Goldfuss,1844). Its possible that crowns of Pseudocorax sp. are also present (and Carcharias sp.).
  16. I've recently found a, how do I say...quite unusual Theropod dinosaur tooth from the Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation (67-66.0 Million Years ago). The paper, titled The occurrences of vertebrate fossils in the Deadhorse Coulee Member of the Milk River Formation and their implications for provincialism and evolution in the Santonian (Late Cretaceous) of North America by Derek Williams Larson, is a record of theropod teeth from various Late Cretaceous formations in Western North America, and buried on page 244 of the report an apparent megalosauridae tooth (UCMP120305) from the Hell Creek Formation (67-66.0 Million Years ago). https://era.library.ualberta.ca/items/54e305be-de2a-4529-adc9-4e6b038ae699/view/28ba15f8-8131-44be-b48f-e4e9648db26e/Larson_Derek_Fall_2010.pdf This for me is pretty unusual as Megalosauridae (as far as we know) lived only between the Middle-Late Jurassic (170-145 Million Years ago), millions of years before the Maastrichtian Cretaceous. I know in the past many theropod dinosaurs were described as species of "Megalosaurus", but that was more around the 1800-early 1900s and the citation for the tooth lists its apparent phylogenetic description as recently as 2008. There was also another less confusing but fascinating description of a Dromaeosauridae tooth (UALVP48462) from the Milk River Formation, which apparently has a tooth crown height of 17.3mm. But besides the pretty fascinating Milk River Dromeosauridae tooth, I'm puzzled about the UCMP120305 specimen! I really skeptical this tooth specimen belongs to megalosauridae. But if it's not, then where could the classification of the specimen have come from? What do you guys think?
  17. Hello all, Most of the belemnite hooks are found in Jurassic sediments (Germany, UK). Does anyone know if Cretaceous belemnite hooks are found? (from the Belemnitellidae family?). I know that in one book about the Cretaceous fossils in Rügen (Germany), belemnite hooks/hooklets are present (forgot the title of the book...). Kind regards, Ruben

  19. Came accross this news shared by the NHM Maastricht, another fossil bird has been discribed from the same quarry and layer in which the famous wonderchicken "Asteriornis" was found. Also the first from such low latitudes. The aythors discuss the relationships of Tylosaurus and Hainosaurus and revalidate Hainosaurus.

Hello all, This weekend another fossil hunt in Cretaceous sediments in the Netherlands (late late Campanian, early Maastrichtian, around 72-66 mya (whole late Maastrichtian) and/or (more specific) 70.8-67/70.8-68 mya). The wetter was good, a bit warm and even sometimes humid. Found some typical Cretaceous fossils. Mainly Belemnites from the species Belemnitella sp. and Belemnella (pachybelemnella) sp. Perhaps some B. (pachybelemnella) obtusa (Schulz, 1979) and one fragment of a sea urchin (Echinocorys sp.). Compared to American sites (for example New Jersey), a relatively low diversity of macrofossils. But nonetheless, some nice fossils.
  24. I'll break my trip report to South Dakota into two parts. First will be my visit to the BHI followed by collecting adventure The purpose of going to the BHI was to pick up the Leptoceratops maxilla's I left during my June trip. Pete has been collecting and pulling together specimens to understand and possibly describe this ceratopsid in the Hell Creek. The material he's collected so far appears to be from an adult and is much smaller than L. gracilis. My maxilla's seem to fit the smaller morphotype. In addition, the BHI provided me two sets of replicas of my specimens, pretty cool. Tankankaceratops is a controversial ceratopsian described by Ott and Larsen 2010. It's a small Triceratopsini known from a partial skull. Pete showed me its occipital condyle which is fused and indicative of an adult. Very cool nasal horn core. Here is a close up of Struthiomimus sedens hand/part of arm... the business end. Think Pete said the top left skull was a rare Camelidae Hespercyon Took photos for reference of the metatarsals from Nanotyrannus Another reference bone a Nanotyrannus carpal bone, much longer than any found on T rex.
