This was my first time at Beltzville State Park in Pennsylvania, USA. I believe these come the Upper Devonian Mahantango Formation. I saw similar examples in other posts as was hoping to confirm my guesses. Thanks 1. Horn coral? 2. Crinoid stem?- not sure if that’s something to the left of the stem. 3. Rugose coral?

I found this interesting fossil in the area of the Beltzville dam in Pennsylvania. Exposures in the area are generally Upper Devonian Mahantango Formation so I was surprised to see what looked to me like a lycopsid plant. The area where I spotted this find was mostly devoid of fossils but there were exposures with usual marine fauna within a few hundred yards. If anyone has any thoughts, I would appreciate it!

Hi folks. This is the first I've seen a line this straight in the shale matrix here. I did not want to break into it until I shared it here for comments. Almost looks like a flattened something, but I have no clue what. Could it just be geological ? Thanks ... as always

Hi folks ! While on a walk to my mailbox, at a quick glance, I noticed the unmistakable shape of this little guy halfway protruding from the shale bank along the road. There is a very thin vein of highly populated matrix that is on my list for future investigatory excavation. Anyone care to provide a positive ID ? (see tags for pertinent info) Thanks so much,

Spent some time earlier poking around at the Devonian aged Mahantango formation at Seven stars and came across some items, the first three pics are the same rock, the tube formation of the first three pics were about twice the size but crumbled away but was able to preserve this much, any help at ids would be great

I received some rough material that is labeled as Mahantango Formation, Middle Devonian : Givetian, McCoy's Ferry, Maryland. The stone has some strange circular impressions on it. I have no idea what these are. Can anyone tell me what these impressions are? Thanks in advance! MikeG

Hello everyone! Regrettably, it has been a while since I contributed in any significant way on the forum. I’ve found myself busier than expected, and I haven’t been fossiling as much as I’d like to. Anywho, I got out on a hunt today that was special for me. I came to this forum two years ago. I had just been on a field trip with the same geology teacher who’d led my mother and my aunts and uncles on field trips. I had a blast and learned that fossil hunting could actually be done in Maryland by normal people, a fact which now seems so obvious to me. I had been hooked, and now I needed to identify some strange finds. So I came here, and from here I was able to learn many things from many people, and I was propelled into a world I now can hardly see myself without, the paleontological one. Now, two years later, I had the chance to volunteer and help out at the very same field trip with the very same teacher! Though none of the students seem to have gotten hooked quite like I did, they all took home a fossil or two, learned quite a bit, and had a good time. That was a good thing to see. I’ll definitely be volunteering next year! Here’s some pictures I took of myself taking a nostalgic walk through some fossil/geological sites (privacy concerns prevent me from showing any with other people), please excuse my ineptitude at smiling for photos:

Hello to everyone, I was trying to put together a plan for a spring or summer trip hunting fossils. I am particularly interested in the animals of mahantango formation and would like to know if anyone is familiar with some public locations that allow people to hunt for the fossils from that formation, or at least do not prohibit this. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

I found this yesterday at the Montour Fossil Pit, it unfortunately didn’t want to come out even close to one piece but I’ve been looking and cannot figure out what it is. Maybe someone else can identify easily??

I found this yesterday in my searches at the Montour fossil pit in Danville pa. I think it is a squid but wouldn’t mind help identifying it. The third picture is the opposite side of the rock. Thanks everyone!

Had another successful trip yesterday to Montour. It’s only my second time going but I really enjoy this place. Figured I’d share my finds with all of you! Partial stem? Clam that was still in the rock, this one actually was nice compared to what I normally find 4 small Pleurodictyum I found, top right is still pretty well encased A really nice shell, possibly oyster?

Still just finding bits. Two pygidia in one piece, and a small cephalon. This entire area must have been a shell pile like you see at the beach today. You know, the ones you have to walk around when bare footed. Nothing but shells, bits n' pieces. Cheers.

Hi everyone. Picked these up yesterday in my garden. The orthoceras orthocone are familiar as is the piece of a goniatite (3rd one here so far) but am wondering what the larger piece is ? It is very smooth, and has the same color, texture and symmetry as the goniatites but is much thinner in proportion. Pictured is both sides and a longitudinal view to hopefully show the symmetry and relatively thin profile. Does it look familiar to any of you ? Thanks.

Hi folks. I cracked into some very nice bryozoans today. Mostly the fenestella (?) and also see this item that looks like the upturned nose of a dipleura. Do you see the same ? Will post some pics of the bryozoans in the general section. Thanks.

Hi again ! This broke out in a difficult way. Maybe the next one will split in a more desirable fashion. Both of these pieces are from the same chunk of matrix, but are 2 different animals. Almost certain of this because they will not "plug" into one another. Could be the same one tho I guess. Anyway, is there enough of it there to ID it ? (them ? ) Thanks for looking,

Hi folks. I cleaned up the horn coral that I posted a pic of earlier. (was wondering if I could find it easily, then realized all I had to do was look for my watch. The missing Timex was much easier to spot. ) Here is pics of it. It is the largest of the many I have found here. Regards,

Just a post to show what this garden patch is made of. This is a typical bucket full of chunks turned up by the plow last year. This patch will be finally tilled this year and seeded over. (might come back later, tho) I guess this is called mudstone as it is just a solid glob of fossils. Here are some pics of one of the chunks before, and after splitting. Very busy in there and quite difficult to get it to split where you want, partly due to being exposed (partially) for a year. Working on the new plow, hope to bust up a new patch in the coming week. Goniatite, Cephalopods, Bryozoans after rain

Hi Folks. Anxious for the rain to quit so I can start digging again. Took a walk through the garden patches and picked these up today after several nice "rinsing" rains". I hope to find more of the bryozoan plates, maybe more larger ones. Maybe you can see more than one variety in the attached pics. More to come .... I'm hoping. Kind regards,

Hello folks ! Tis the season to go digging. fa la la la ................. I haven't posted for a spell, but have checked in on occasion. There is a small area of my yard where grass won't grow, just weeds with bare ground in between. This item was lying on the surface. I've ridden the mower over it for 26 years now and finally looked down at the right moment. Looks like it might be the thorax of a trilobite, but am not sure. Is it recognizable to any of you ? Thanks.
