Hello group. I just wanted to share some photos of a Mastodon Americanus tooth I purchased and detailed. I've included the before and after photos. There are no enhancements to this fossil, just a lite coat of wax.

A Personal Best Find Cometh From The Texas Pleistocene
CreekCrawler posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Hello all, sometimes Lady Luck smiles and bestows on us some great things in our lives. She had a huge grin on her face and spread her arms wide open and bequeathed to me this once in a lifetime find. I present to you this awesome American Mastodon molar. While scanning a dry riverbed my eyes locked on to something that that I had collected before, but usually only in parts and pieces. This time I knew that the material from this beast that I was gazing upon was the most complete fossil of it's kind that I had found. My collecting buddy and I stood there I amazement at the find in front of us.We stooped over to get a closer look and both started jumping around hotting and hollering out loud.We actually did the bear hug thing"I hope no one saw us" After about three minutes of sheer disbelief at what we were seeing the excavation began... The tooth was not hard to extract, but I took my sweet time to revel in the process. Knowing how fragile these teeth must be from the small pieces of enamel collected in the past, I gently pried the silty mud away from around the tooth. There were glass shards, gravel, and other obstructions surrounding the tooth that I pried away to reveal a fairly complete mastodon molar sans the root. Here is an in situ series of pics detailng that. I am very happy "to say the least" and I figure that this find deserves it's own display box Here you go !
