Ammonites: Finding and Destroying Fossils for Science
DeepTimeIsotopes posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Some of you may have seen my ammonite donation. If not and you are curious it is linked here: It is an important player in this trip. Anyway I thought I might describe my first trip to this locality and why you might realize it is a little more rare than the normal finds there. Some of this is part of a poster for the now cancelled Rocky Mountain Section of the Geological Society of America so if I ever do get to put my poster online I will post a link here so you guys can look at it too. For now here is a trip report. -
From the album: Mancos Shale - Grand Junction, CO
Marine burrow. Found this down in the Mancos shale, loose. Possibly from the overlying Mesaverde formation. I have seen many burrows in the Mesaverde sandstone.-

Went fossil hunting with my daughter this morning in the Bookcliffs, North of the Grand Junction, CO airport. We found this weathering out of the shale in a wash. The Baculite is about 8" long and 1.5" wide. Can hardly wait to prep this, I think it will make a nice display. My plan is to slice the base of the matrix flat (without damaging the fossil) so it will sit nicely on a table or shelf.
