Hello all! I was wondering if anyone would perhaps be able to help me identify this species of cephalopod I found last summer while out exploring for fossils on Manitoulin Island in Canada (specifically in the Sheguiandah area)? I am pretty sure it is some sort of Orthocone, but it would be neat if I could narrow it down to a potential species level for sure. Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

Crystalline... Sponge? (Little Current, Manitoulin Island, Ontario)
CabinTom posted a topic in Fossil ID
Found along the shore of the North Channel at Little Current, Ontario. Large, bumpy nodule which seems to be completely formed of (calcite?) crystals all the way through (I'm surprised by the multiple colours, but maybe that's normal?). I'm assuming it's a sponge, though wondering if someone could give a more specific ID or perhaps explain the crystallization seen here.- 2 replies

Found in a roadside cut on Goat Island, just north of Manitoulin Island's swing bridge. A layer of hexagonal "scales" overlaying a branched structure. What is this? I have no idea what I'm looking at! Also the top corner has a small ribbed structure which seems to be separate from the rest. If someone has an ID for this as well, that'd be amazing!

Found on Manitoulin Island. I believe at Kagawong... but unfortunately, it's been a while and I didn't make any notes at the time.

Found on the shore of the North Channel at Little Current, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. The side of the piece features a transverse view of a Crinoid. Can this be ID'd more specifically? Above is some sort of shell. Can this be ID'd? There are various other small fossils, though I don't know if those are identifiable.

Trilobite? (Little Current, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada)
CabinTom posted a topic in Fossil ID
I found this along the shore of the North Channel at Little Current, Manitoulin Island, Ontario. I understand the small dark traces are Graptolites. Would anyone have any info on what I assume is a Trilobite?- 4 replies

Hi everyone, We recently stumbled across this interesting specimen while combing through some rocks of the Verulam Formation (Upper Ordovician), just north of Manitoulin Island in Ontario. We initially thought trilobite, however we are now unsure, as there are over 30 segments of the thorax and they appear to be curved up towards the cephalon as opposed to down towards the pygidium. Any help is appreciated!

Here is a rock off one beach with a real mixture ! A simple find with lots to see ! There are several small apendages with the largest being in the second pic in the middle right out near the edge. What could it be from in that time period ? There are no shortages of aquatic fossils on the island big and small.. LW Note: The second pic to follow !

I am new to this hobby but have always been interested for most of my 68 years ! While wandering the beaches and roadside cuts on Manitoulin Island searching for fossils a month or so ago I came across several interesting finds including this one. This was found along a stretch of shoreline and it appears to be the Cephalon of some type of Trilobite ? I think it is the imprint / image of the actual creature itself not it's protective shell which may be lying upside down beside it ! During molting ? Could some of the more advanced collectors please confirm / comment on these pictures ? I can supply additional pics if required. Thanx !. LW t
