Has anyone found an easy way to project an image of a fossil assemblage to allow tracing onto paper to map and label multiple specimens on same rock? I have a plate made of 2 large pieces with about 30 trilobite cephalons and 1 upside down complete one on the surface. They do not contrast at all against the matrix. So, not really a good example to just photo and map. I'm guessing the easiest way will be to borrow a digital projector to project a photo onto a sheet of paper? Wait, just came to me. Part of the problem with just using a photograph is changing the directional lighting to bring out each specimen as well as possible. So, maybe use camera hooked to projector and do live display so I could change the lighting as needed in real tiime? Now I'll just have to get ahold of a projector. Thanks for the help

Sometimes I find myself at a site, say a road cut, where I want to look for fossils but don’t know the local geology. (For “sometimes,” read “often.”) But I always have my phone, so I can get the GPS coordinates where I am. Is there a way to go from GPS coordinates to geologic age of a location? If there is, it’ll be a lot easier to know what sort of fossils I might expect to find.

Has Anyone Used GIS and Remote Sensing to aid in fossil hunting?
Suchascenicworld posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hello everyone! Fossil hunting is massive hobby of mine and I am trying to find new localities (that are of course, legal). I have a background in GIS and Spatial Analyses (albeit, working on completely different things!) and was thinking about using my geo-spatial skills to narrow down a few areas. In so far, I have layers dedicated to streams, bedrock, and DEM but I was curious if others have used GIS and remote sensing to aid in fossil hunting, and if so, are there any specific layers or techniques that you find to be particularly useful when searching for areas that may have fossils? Thank you!- 42 replies

Hi preparators friends, I know that the method can be different according the preparator but can you explain us your method to map a jacket when you prep one. How do you proceed when multiple fossils are on each other in a jacket. What to do and don't. Please share with us your knowledge and experience.
